"woooAAAAHH" a box came tumbling down at an alarming speed towards Y/ns face. She tried to extend her arms to catch the box. But it was too late. The box smacked her square in the face and she fell off the chair she was standing on. Followed by an 'oompf'.
"Owie owie" she rubbed her half numb nose, trying to get the feeling back. The box laid beside the girl, its articles spilling out.
The colorful protective boxes covering the VHS tapes stood out.
She quickly crawled over to the box and started snooping through it. The box was humbly labeled "movies". These movies belonged to her mother back in her fanatic days. After the hospital visit they immediately got invited to visit again. Ofcourse it was just for more analysis on Michael, but she was happy to be visiting again. About 3 weeks have passed since she last saw him.
Y/n said she'd bring a horror movie, and that's what she was going to do. Her tiny hands rummaged through the dusty films.
'Texas Chainsaw, Cannibal Holocaust, Puppetmaster, The Fog, Cujo.....' all of these sounded extremely imposing, sometimes she'd look away to not look at the covers of the films. Once confidence flew back into her, Y/n turned her head and grabbed the last tape in the box.
'Child's Play'
The cover didn't scare her and instead perked her curiosity a little. It had a children's play doll holding a knife. Maybe it's because of the familiarity of dolls to her that didn't strike fear. Or the fact she was still ignorant to those types of tropes.
Her mind was set on this one, but there was no way they'd let her take a horror movie into the hospital. It needed a....
Disguise
She quietly shut the attic door and smuggled the movie downstairs. Next to the tv was a bookshelf filled with movies. Mostly romcoms and old children's movies. Her finger carefully grazed the surfaces of each one. Eventually it landed on the most innocent movie one's mind could think of. The Aristocats. The cover slid off nicely as she set the VHS aside and slid the cover of Chucky off, then replaced it with the innocent looking one.
"This should do it"
"Are you ready sweetie?"
Y/n almost threw the movie across the room as she jumped from her mothers voice.
"Yeah ready as I'll ever be!!" She held the movie behind her back.
The mother rolled her eyes "Alright give it up"

"Give what up?" "Whatever is behind your back"
Y/n sighed and gave the movie to her. "Awww, you want to watch this with Michael?" Her mother teased her. She bashfully nodded
"Oh my baby has a little crush" said woman wrapped her daughter in a tight embrace. Y/n struggled to breathe but managed to cough out "Can we leave now?"
The mother giggled and patted her head "impatient I see, but you do have a point. Let's get going"
After a few more checks for anything forgotten, they were well on their way to the hospital. Y/n anticipated how the day would hopefully play out. However her thoughts stopped when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned her head to look at her mom, but she still had her eyes on the road.
"What's wrong mom?"
The woman let out a deep sigh without faltering her vision on the views ahead of her.
"I want you to be careful around Michael... I can't control who you like, but in this case I want you to be careful around him. He is still somewhat dangerous. And I don't want you to get hurt" Y/n soaked in the details of her mothers words.
"You are still an obsession to him, please be careful with what you say"
Her head slumped low in thought as she verbally agreed with her mother.
They finally arrived at the hospital.
Doctor Loomis was standing in the lobby waiting for them. They all greeted eachother accordingly. The layout of the day was the same as last time, she would get atleast an hour of alone time with Michael as her mother and Loomis would converse about future plans.
Michael's problems had seemingly gotten worse since she last saw him. He's stopped talking altogether and wears his paper masks all day.
They entered through the swinging metal doors. And there Michael was patiently waiting. She didn't care about the mask he was wearing. Y/n sprinted towards the boy and gave him a warm squeeze. "Look what I brought" she showed him the video tape.
His questioning gaze reached her "I thought you said you were bringing a horror movie? " He scribbled down in his notebook.
"Just wait and see" the girl winked, earning a blush from Michael
°°°°
The day went along as planned. Everything was going wonderful. It finally reached that point in the schedule where her mother and Doctor Loomis went and left them alone for an hour. Well, they'd be chaperoned by a nurse

"Play nice now, you two" they reminded the both of them before leaving. Being under the supervision of the nurse. "Miss can we uh- watch a movie?" Y/n tried asking politely.
The nurse sneered and bent down to her height. "I don't give a damn what you brats do, just don't rat me out. Cause I'm goin' out for a smoke" the nurses heels sounded as she tapped her foot condescendingly.
"Got it?!" She almost spat in Y/ns face. Y/n nodded her head once and took a step back. "Good, you shitheads behave" her heels clicked as she walked away to somewhere Y/n didn't even bother to think about.
"So...lets watch this thing!" The girl turned towards Michael and jumped in the air.
"How are we going to watch it anyways? The main television room is locked " he wrote
Y/n shook her head and clicked her tongue "Michael, have you forgotten the TV in the corner of the room?" her tone slightly teased him. Indeed there was a tv hooked up in the corner of the room attached to the wall. "Now the tricky part is how do I reach it"
The TV was well above six feet up the wall.
Michael pushed a chair infront of the tv
"Climb on "
Y/n scrambled onto the chair and steadily stood up. She held the movie in her teeth as her hand reached the power button. Once she pressed it, a bright blue screen faded in. The bottom left of the screen said 'Select input'
Without thinking, her fingers mashed a bunch of buttons. Hopefully clicking on the right one.
The text 'VCR' came up on the screen. She recognized it as when her mom put in a movie it'd usually say that. She clicked another button and a small slot flipped open. It was big enough for the movie she had. Y/n quickly slid it in and immediately the TV made some weird noises before the main menu screen popped up.
> Play
Scene select
Languages
The arrow was already on the play option. So her finger clicked the small button with the triangle, already knowing what it did. The movie began playing so she hopped down from the chair and sat down on the ground looking at the screen. Michael sat next to her, looking at her through the side of his eye and pretending to watch the movie.
Throughout the hour they watched the film, Y/n had latched herself to Michael's arm Incase any scary parts came on. She'd bury her face in it when graphic scenes came on, but she'd convince herself to continue watching the movie for him.
"Don't be scared" Michael scribbled and held up to her face. "I don't wanna look back" she mumbled into his shoulder. "And our hour is almost up, I should take the movie out-" he flipped the paper around and showed an already prepared note.
"Let's stay like this a little longer..."
her unmoving body was answer enough for him.
Ten minutes has passed as they continued watching Chucky. "We really should take the movie out before we get caught" Michael held no protest so the girl got up on the chair, pressing the eject button and retrieving the movie.
Sliding it back in the disguise cover and shutting the TV off like nothing ever happened. "It was fun while it lasted... right Michael-" she felt a sweet and light sensation on her cheek. Michael slid his mask back on and looked away.
On que, the metal doors swung open and her mother and Doctor Loomis came walking in. Not a second later so did the Nurse. "Alright you two. Times up" Her mother stated. Y/n nodded and looked at Michael one last time, muttering a 'see you later' before running to her mothers side.
"We're happy you visited Michael again. I'll call you again to visit another time"
"Of course" the mother nodded her head and took Y/ns hand. Y/n turned her head to look at Michael one last time with a slight blush present on her face. The doors closed, blocking them from any further interactions.
°°°
Weeks- No, Months had passed
No calls from Loomis
Y/n grew more and more desperate to see her friend. She thought seeing Michael every month or so was a permanent arrangement
Until one day the phone rang. Her mother answered as always
Y/n eavesdropped on the conversation. It was shorter than usual, with the mothers reaction only being "oh, that's horrible" and "how awful". There was one last thank you before she hung up the phone.
Y/n was pulled to the side by her mother. This day forward, she could no longer visit or contact Michael ever again. An incident had occurred and it deemed Michael unfit for any outside visitors.
She was unable to sleep that night. Head overrun with thoughts.
Through the years, she slowly forgot her friend while she made new memories elsewhere.

Embers in the Ash is an epic fantasy adventure story that aims to span quite a few chapters (I hope!). To set expectations, this isn't going to be a LitRPG or power fantasy-style story. I'm aiming for a fairly grounded story set in a fairly high-fantasy world. I hope you enjoy it! For this first month of publication, my aim is to give you, the reader, something to really bite into. I will be releasing a chapter every day at 9:15 AM EST (13:15 GMT), as well as the occasional double chapter (which will always be announced by a post-chapter author blurb). Check in fifteen minutes after the first chapter's release! After this first month of publication, the aim is to go for either a weekly or bi-weekly release schedule, depending on the sort of time I can reliably dedicate to writing. Either way, settle in for the long haul, and welcome to the story!
