《Patient Twelve》Chapter Twenty-Three

The flight back to Canada was quiet. Oliver and Bethany sat on opposite sides of the jet. They had Ben and I separated from each other. They ignored each other, except to say the odd snarky comment.
I was getting to go back to Canada, but I did not know how long this fight between Oliver and Bethany would last. It will delay how long it will take for Ben and me to get out of this. While they're fighting they'll be keeping the two of us apart. I just had to focus on the important part: I was getting off that island.
We landed at the field in Canada that we had taken off from. Oliver took my glasses and handed me the dark sunglasses. We walked out of the plane, and the few workers were taking the bags out of the plane. One worker drove Oliver's car up to us. He got out and passed Oliver the keys.
"Get in the car," he said to Bethany.
"No," she said.
"Beth, we'll talk about this when we get to my house," he said.
"No." She shook her head. "I'm not going home with you. We have nothing else to talk about."
She ripped her ring off her finger. She threw it at Oliver and it bounced off his chest. He tried to grab it, but missed and it fell into the overgrown grass.
"You're overreacting," Oliver said. He reached out to grab her, but she stepped back. He lowered his head and bit down on his lip. "Come on, Beth. Please, don't do this."
"I'm going to call a taxi," she said. "Let's go, Ben."
She turned and spoke to one of the workers. He nodded his head and grabbed two bags out of the trunk of Oliver's car. He wheeled them into the building. Bethany looked over at us with tear-filled eyes and walked away. Ben's face was pale. He opened his mouth to say something but didn't. He turned and followed Bethany into the building.
"Get in the car, Diana," Oliver said.
I nodded and got into the passenger seat. Oliver got onto his hands and knees and was searching through the grass. I looked over at the steering wheel, but the keys were not dangling from the ignition as I hoped. I searched around the driver's seat, but there was nothing.
Oliver came back to the car. I straightened and fastened the seatbelt across my chest. He slid into the driver's seat. He tossed Bethany's engagement ring into the cupholder.
He drove us back to his house in silence. He gave me the odd glare, but I didn't notice most of them because I was too focused on staring out the window. I tried to memorize the way out from Oliver's house.

"Wait for me," Oliver said when he pulled into the driveway. He walked around to my side of the car and opened the door. He grabbed a fistful of my hair and pulled me out of the car. My hands went around his wrist, and I gritted my teeth.
"Let go of me!" I yelled.
He pulled me into the house by my hair. My scalp burned, and I clawed at Oliver's hand. My feet stumbled as he pulled me down the stairs to the basement. I reached out for the railing, but Oliver grabbed my wrist with his other hand. He pushed me down onto the floor. I screamed as my elbow broke my fall. Pain shot up my arm and tears filled my eyes.
"What were you thinking, Diana?" Oliver asked.
I looked up with my blurry vision to see Oliver towering over me. I cradled my arm to my chest and rolled onto my back.
"I'm sorry," I cried.
"How many times have you done it?" he asked.
"What?"
"How many times have you slept with Ben?"
"Once. It only happened that night."
Oliver let out a deep breath. I placed my hand on the floor, and pain spread up my arm. I hissed and pushed myself up using my other arm. Oliver's eyes widened as he kneeled.
"Let me see your arm," he said.
"No," I said.
I tried to push myself away from Oliver. He grabbed the top of my arm, and pinned my leg down with his knee. I squeezed my eyes shut as I pressed his fingers into my elbow.
"Bend your elbow," he said.
I balled my hand into a fist and bent my arm. A sharp pain spiraled up my arm. I moved my arm in and out, and the warm tears ran down my cheeks.
"Good," Oliver said. "It's not broken. It's just bruised."
He slipped his arm under mine and pulled me onto my feet. He kept his arm around me as we walked down the hallway. We went into my room. He helped me sit on the edge of the bed.
"Stay here," he said.
He left the room. I twisted my body to try and look at my throbbing elbow. The skin had yet to change colours. Oliver came back into my room and set the suitcase down beside me.
"Do you need me to help you get changed?" he asked.
"No." I shook my head.
He stormed out of the room and slammed the door. I used my good arm to search through the suitcase. I changed into a pair of pajamas. I dragged my feet across the hall and went into the room with the television. I flopped down on the couch and grabbed the remote. I searched through the channels until I found the news.

Ben was my ticket to getting out of this. He had already built trust with Bethany and Oliver. All of that trust is probably gone now. If Oliver and Bethany get back together, they would not trust Ben around me. I couldn't rely on Ben anymore. I had to hope people were still looking for me.
The news anchors laughed as they joked about a celebrity feud. The screen cut to a weather report and then a man was in a helicopter talking about the traffic. My heart sunk in my chest as each story passed and none of them were about me.
I couldn't stand this disappointment anymore. I got up off of the couch and went over to the bookshelf holding a collection of movies. I searched through them and grabbed a stack of black and white movies. I placed one in. I set the stack of movies on the coffee table. I wrapped a blanket around myself as I returned to the couch.
I tried to ease the knot of worry in my stomach as I let my mind go blank. I had just started my second movie when I heard the stairs creak.
Oliver walked into the room. I didn't recognize him at first. I'm used to seeing him in his clean-cut dress shirt and pants covered by a lab coat. He now shuffled into the room wearing sweatpants and a T-shirt with a stain. A bottle of beer was in his hand. He dropped a pizza box onto the coffee table. He sat down on the recliner and stretched himself out.
"Have you talked to Dr. Phillips?" I asked.
"She won't answer my calls." He took a swig of his beer. "You really fucked this up."
"What did I do? It wasn't like we cheated on either of you."
Bethany was cheating on him with Ben, but I knew to keep my mouth shut.
"You embarrassed us," Oliver said.
"And why does that break you two up?" I asked.
Oliver shrugged and took another drink.
"You have to keep calling her," I said. "She'll get over this, but you can't give up."
"Is this so you can see Ben again?" he asked.
"No." I swallowed hard and tried to try and keep my voice steady. "You obviously look miserable. I just want you to feel better."
Oliver chuckled before taking another drink of his beer.
"Beth is not going to make me feel better," he said. "I don't need her anymore. I have you. And you are going to help me."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"I hope you have really been spending all that time studying. You'll need it tomorrow night."
"You're not going to do an operation already, are you?"
"Well, that is my plan. We're going out tomorrow night to find my new patient."
"We?"
I jumped off of the couch. My fingers were curled so tight into the blanket that my knuckles ached. Oliver raised an eyebrow.
"I'm not doing that," I said. "I am not helping you kidnap some innocent person."
"You don't have much choice," he said.
"Or what?" I asked. "You're not going to kill me. I'm really all you have now, especially now that you don't have Bethany."
Oliver reached into the pocket on the front of his shirt. He fished out a small card and smirked.
"58 Livingston Avenue," he said. "That's your address right?"
My jaw dropped and Oliver chuckled. I squinted to see that he was holding onto my driver's license.
"If you don't want to help me find a new patient, I could always use your family," he said. "It would be nice to see your mother again, wouldn't it? And you said your sister is a nurse. That would be very helpful if she survived."
"You wouldn't be able to kidnap them. The cops would figure it out. They would trace it back to you."
"No, they won't. They haven't found you, have they?"
I took in a sharp breath. The tears were burning my eyes. I refused to blink and let them fall.
"How did you do it?" I asked. "I mean, I'm the twelfth person. How do you get away with that?"
"Outside help," Oliver said. "I never took them. I hired someone else to do it for me."
I thought back to the night I was walking home from practice. A hand had shot up over my mouth, and there was a sharp pinch in my arm. I struggled against a strong hold as I slipped into unconsciousness. I never saw the person.
"You didn't kidnap me?" I asked.
"No."
"Then why do you need me?" I asked. "Why not just hire this guy again?"
Oliver sighed as he stood from the recliner. He stumbled with the first few steps he took.
"I've lost my connection," he said. He flipped open the lid to the pizza box on the coffee table. He took one of the remaining pieces and took a bite of it. "You better get some sleep, Kitten. Tomorrow will be a big day."

Who Fixes Books Anyway?
On the pretense of a raise, the relatively new employee Pernie is called in to talk with her superiors. NOTE: This is a short story written for a class I took recently. As a result of deadlines, it does not possess the quality (or length) that I would like and is rather thrunkated. Perhaps sometime far in the furture I'll fix it up. For now, I have much more important things to work on, such as my other fiction.
