Joshua said to his brother from the passenger's seat of Caleb's car.

"We're just around the corner." Caleb responded.

Caleb had convinced Joshua to take a last minute weekend trip to their grandfather's lake house in Lake Tahoe.

They had been on the road for at least six and a half hours from Los Angeles to the mountain range of Sierra Nevada.

"It's been like four years. Give me a break." Joshua snickered as Caleb turned off of the highway to a familiar wooded road.

Finally, Caleb parked the car outside of the lake house.

Well except you can't really call it a house.

It was more like a massive estate, with a patio, a high deck, multiple car garage and a pier that led out to the lake.

Joshua grabbed the keys from the cup holder and speed walked to the porch to unlock the door.

The interior was exactly like Joshua had remembered with retro furniture, French doors and a guitar picks stranded everywhere.

"This place is... What the fuck are you doing here?"

Joshua whirled around to see Ayoluwa standing in the foyer, a dumbstruck expression on her face.

"I should be asking you that. This is my family's lake house." Joshua replied.

"No. Quir told me that his dad owns this house."

"Then he lied."

In the midst of their arguing, the sound of two cars starting came from outside.

Ayoluwa widened her eyes then ran outside.

Sure enough, Caleb's car and a silver minivan with Shareef at the helm, were pulling out of the driveway, leaving behind Joshua's duffel bag and what must've been Ayoluwa's suitcase.

"Wait! Guys!" Ayoluwa ran out of the house, screaming at the top of her lungs.

"Y'all!" Joshua yelled from the porch, "You can't do this!"

Ayoluwa began to ran after the car in pure desperation, "Wait! Wait!"

But they were gone.

Joshua let out a groan of frustration as Ayoluwa pulled her phone out from her jeans pocket and held it to her ear.

"Turn the car around and come get me." Ayoluwa snapped, "I'm not staying here with trout."

"My grandma's busy with Oasis and you know I can't leave Lauryn with Imani." She said to the person on the other end of the line, after a beat.

Whoever she was talking to must've said something that pissed her off because her face turned a cherry red.

"If something happens to Lauryn while I'm stuck here, I'm killing all of you." Ayoluwa snapped then stuck her phone into her pocket.

Joshua looked down on her from the porch and Ayoluwa mumbled something, "That was Dior. They're not coming back for either of us until August."

"Then you just gonna have to find your own way back," Joshua walked off the porch, collected his bag then walked back inside and closed the door, leaving Ayoluwa outside.

He dropped his bag by the couch then called his brother.

"Yo?" Caleb picked up.

"You on some fucked up shit for leaving me with Palmer and you know it!" Joshua yelled into the speaker.

"Y'all need to get along. You and her arguing all the time is killing everyone's vibe." Caleb responded in a cool tone.

"So what? You and Reef thought leaving her here would do something? Who's dumb ass idea is this?"

"Dior's. And at first I wasn't fucking with it but y'all need to chill the fuck out." Caleb responded.

"Nigga, turn the fuck around and get me!"

"Not until August. I gotta go. Have fun!" Caleb said in a fake pleasant voice then hung up.

"Fuck. Fuck!" Joshua ran a hand down his face.

"Who else can I call? Who else can I call?" Joshua muttered.

When he glanced out the window, Joshua could see that Ayoluwa had picked up her suitcase and was now sitting on the rocking chair located on the porch, her phone still pressed to her ear.

Joshua tapped Jalen's number to FaceTime.

It took a couple of rings but Jalen answered, "What bruh?"

His tone held no emotion and he immediately put Joshua on pause.

"I need your help." Joshua replied.

"With what?"

"I'm stranded in Lake Tahoe. Can you help me?"

Jalen was quiet, "I would remind you that I'm in Hawaii but I don't wanna hear what you think today."

"Jalen, I'm for real in trouble." Joshua snapped.

Joshua could hear someone on the other end of Jalen's line.

"Yeah, well, I gotta go and be a simp. Bye."

The line went dead, "Shit!"

The sun was beginning to set now and he could see that Ayoluwa had started to pace.

Joshua sighed then unlocked and opened the door to peek his head out.

"There's bears around here. You should probably come inside before they see you." Joshua said lowly.

Ayoluwa blinked, surveyed the empty driveway then the lake, gripped her suitcase by the handle and slipped by Joshua into the house, making sure she didn't make contact.

Joshua surveyed the sun going down behind the crystal clear lake and shook his head before closing the door.

What the fuck did I do to deserve friends like this?
