sat on the oak wood finished deck in the backyard of their house.
Their parents were fast asleep on the second floor so the brothers were passing a blunt between them.
Caleb passed the blunt to Joshua who laid on his back so he could look at the stars and the moon, bright above the duo.
Joshua blew out the smoke, "Woo, do you ever feel like something's missing?"
Caleb looked back at his brother, "What do you mean?"
"Like... You're missing the bigger picture or rather the right information to have peace?" Joshua took out another puff of the blunt.
"Alright, nigga," Caleb snatched it from Joshua's hand, "You getting too deep and you ruining my high."
"Sorry. Just got a lot on my mind." Joshua answered.
"What's up?" Caleb asked, taking his own puff.
"Me and JG got into it." Joshua explained.
"About?" Caleb blew the smoke out into the clear night.
"Just some stupid shit. Mainly him making decisions about his future too soon. I told him that and he said that I was bitter. Do you think that's true?"

"I think that..." Caleb paused, "I think that graduation coming up is freaking you out and that your best friend making a life without you is making it worse."
Joshua coughed, "You take one psychology class and think you're Dr. Phil."
Caleb nodded, "You've been acting weird since Patrick came home. Is all of this about the lake house?"
"I can't believe he's just gonna sell it without talking to us about it. He knows that was grandpa's favorite place in the world and that it was supposed to past down to-."
"To you. I know." Caleb passed the blunt back and Joshua gladly took a puff, trying to calm his nerves, "I know, Gup."
"He's being selfish. Just selfish. I saw him the other day, going over pictures of the house with his camera with the realtor, talking about which pictures would get it sold the fastest." Joshua sounded bitter, even to his own ears, but he couldn't help it.
Everything that was once his grandfather's was slowly being ripped and torn away without giving Joshua a second to say, 'wait.'
"I just... I wanna go to Arizona already. I wanna lock in on basketball. I don't think there's anything for me anymore." Joshua shook his head as he gave his brother back the blunt.
"Mom and dad are here. Dior, Shaqi-." Caleb started to say.
"Don't talk to me about them. They acting funny too." Joshua interrupted, pulling up his hood to better support his head.
"Don't act like a brat, Gup. Don't lose your friends over hating that girl." Caleb advised.
"I'm tired of all of my conversations somehow circling back to Palmer." Joshua responded, "Now, puff, puff, pass, nigga, hurry up!"
Caleb cracked up but did as Joshua asked, "Maybe if you started taking someone seriously you'd mellow out. And I'm not talking about Karina, she's fucking stupid."

"Karina doesn't ask too many questions. She doesn't wonder where I've been and I don't have to worry about including her in any of my future plans because I know she's not gonna be there," Joshua pointed out.
"She comes over, I get my nut, she gets hers and then she leaves. After I graduate, I'm never seeing her again and she knows what's up. It's perfect for everyone." Joshua took a lighter out of his pocket and relit the blunt before puffing it.
"I'm not talking about just sex, dumb ass. Any lame ass nigga could have sex, that's not an accomplishment," Caleb rolled his eyes.
"I'm talking about meeting someone real, staying low, staying out the way and building with them. Just them." Caleb explained.
Joshua sat up to look at his brother, "Did you meet someone at college or sumn?"
Caleb immediately began to smile at the question and Joshua shook his head at how much the smile reminded him of the expressions on his friends' faces when they talked about their girlfriends.
"I mean... She's cool. I like her company. She tells me how it is and I like that. That's all imma say for now because I know how you can get." Caleb sighs, "And I don't feel like arguing with you, for real. Shit'll blow my high."
"Simp." Joshua takes a puff, "You, Jalen, Sharife... Why is everyone so good with being a simp?"
"Ain't nothing wrong with being a simp if she deserves it." Caleb snatched the blunt from him, "If she's holding you down then she can get simped over. Simple."
"The minute I take one of these clown ass girls serious, hell will freeze over." Joshua chuckled.
Caleb shook his head, "You say that until you meet her."
Joshua gave his brother a look, "Do all y'all in relationships get like a script? Repeating the same shit."
Caleb was quiet as he took another puff.
Joshua sighed, "Aye, my bad."
"It's aight, I guess."
"What does she look like?"
Caleb took his phone from beside him and opened his Instagram to a girl with deep brown skin, hazel eyes and a dragon tattoo around her ankle.
Joshua nodded approvingly and Caleb held up the roach in his fingers, "Damn, hold on. I got another eighth in my bag."
Joshua gestured for the roach and Caleb handed it to him before going back into the house, closing the sliding door behind him.
Joshua took another puff then laid back down on the deck as his eyes glazed over slightly.
