《Garden | j. green》039

The feeling of heartbreak, grief and betrayal was weighing down her bones and chest cavity, making it almost impossible to move more than a couple of inches.

Her skin was growing pale due to lack of sun, her eyes sunken in and red due to the constant crying and lack of sleep and her phone on do not disturb due to the need of being utterly left alone.

The only movement she was doing was shuffling to the bathroom for hygiene and to the hallway when one of her family members would leave food outside of her door.

Jalen had flew back alone yesterday and Alejandro had extended her return ticket, thankfully understanding that Noelani's head was too muddled to travel on her own.

How did I miss all the signs?

How did I let him lie to me so easily?

Noelani turned over in the twin bed and picked up her phone to stare at the lock screen.

Her iPhone lock screen was a picture taken of her and Jalen, all the way back in Mid November.

Sydney had taken a picture of the two while they were on one of their double dates with her and Jordan.

In the picture, Noelani was lightly holding Jalen's chin while he simply grinned back at the camera.

At once her eyes began to tear up again at the memory of what had been and what could've continued to be.

But their relationship was over now, and Noelani had to accept that sorrowful fact.

She sat up and began to wipe her eyes then pressed her knees to her oversized t-shirt covered chest.

The sound of someone knocking at her bedroom door opening caused Noelani to put down her phone and look over her shoulder to examine the closed door, "I don't want company."

The door creaked open anyway to reveal that it was her uncle Kai, wearing an expression of concern.

"Come on," Kai said as he stepped further into the room, "We wanna take you somewhere."

"Do I have to?" Noelani responded, her voice hoarse due to her lack of speaking, "I don't really wanna go anywhere right now."

"We're not giving you a choice. Get up, comb your hair and wear a wet suit."

Noelani reached a hand out, "Please help me up. My feet are asleep."

Kai came further into the room and pulled Noelani to her feet, "I know it doesn't seem like it right now, but things are gonna get better. This time this next year, you're not even gonna remember what heartbreak feels like. You're gonna look back at this and hate him and laugh."

Noelani nodded numbly at her uncle's advice.

Kai gave her a squeeze then left the bedroom so she could get dressed.

Noelani went to her old dresser and rifled through the top drawer until her fingers brushed against an all black wetsuit.

Noelani changed out of her pajamas into her wetsuit, took the scrunchie out of her hair, sprayed some water into it and some leave in conditioner then left her room for the first time in days.

In the hallway, her mother, Leilani, Kai, Makani, Keoni, Nalani, Maui and Hanale were whispering to each other, stopping once they noticed that Noelani was out of her bedroom.

"If we're all going, who's staying with Kelani?" Noelani asked, rubbing her eye and looking down at the floor.

"I am," Makani volunteered.

Noelani nodded and Anela wrapped one arm around her daughter's shoulders, "How are you doing kid?"

Kid.

Once again, her eyes began to fill with tears and Noelani looked away to properly wipe her corneas.

"I hate him. I hate him." Maui shook his head, a murderous look on his face.

"Let's just go," Noelani sniffled, tucking her brown hair behind her ear.

The family shuffled out to the outside of Anela's house and Noelani got into the passenger seat of her mother's black Jeep Cherokee.

She leaned her elbow on the window and stared at the sunny sky, hating it for the first time in her life.

All the beauty of her island had been reduced.

Noelani couldn't see anything remarkable here without thinking of him.

Anela got into the driver's seat while Leilani and Hanale sat in the back.

Kai, Nalani, Maui and Keoni got into Kai's silver pick up truck to follow Anela off of her property.

Noelani could feel Anela glance at her repeatedly as she drove, "Mom, where are we going?"

"It's a surprise." Anela replied.

"Lei, where are we going?"

"I can't tell you." The younger girl chirped.

"Han?" Noelani tried.

"Nope." The younger boy responded.

Noelani rolled her eyes and started to scroll through the missed text messages on her phone.

He must've told them.

There were some from Sydney and Jasmine in their group chat, some from Coleman, some from Nimari, one each from Jordan and Jack and then dozens from Jalen.

'I love you.'

'I've never felt like this before, please believe me.'

'I miss you. Can we talk? Please?'

'You don't understand, please let me explain."

"We can't end like this.'

'I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry.'

"Give me your phone," Anela commanded, "You don't need to be looking at anything from him right now."

Noelani passed her phone to her mother and Anela threw the phone so it would land in the backseat.

After a couple more minutes of silently riding along, the four parked in front of an empty, small beach that was partially secluded due to the palm trees.

Noelani straightened up and looked to her mother, "Is this...?"

"Mhmm. The first place you surfed." Anela grinned but then it faded after seeing no change on Noelani's face.

"I don't wanna do this right now. I can't appreciate it fully." Noelani admitted.

"Do not let that asshole ruin your favorite place in the world." Leilani interjected.

Noelani sighed and slowly got out to step onto the sand while Kai parked next to his sister.

Various surfboards, including her own were in the back of his truck.

"Did dad send you this?" Noelani asked.

"Yeah, he sent it after you skipped school to go surfing," Anela shot her a look as she folded the surfboard painted with hibiscuses and flames under her arm.

Noelani jogged up and took the surfboard from her mother as Nalani strolled up to her, her own surfboard under her arm.

"Come on," Nalani nudged her, "Race ya!"

Not one to turn down a competition, Noelani started to run towards the water without another word.

Nalani was on her heels, letting out a shriek.

By an inch, Noelani hit the water first, and began to paddle so she could catch the incoming wave.

It was at least twenty feet but Noelani caught it with ease, letting the board follow the water's direction.

"Whoo!" Kai cheered her on from the sand.

Noelani straddled the board again, wishing that surfing gave that usual feeling of flying that it usually did.

But it didn't, her wings had been crushed and broken by love, by Jalen.

And now Noelani was worried that she would never be able to fly again.
