"What the fuck?" She blurted.
A few of the parents around them in the bleachers gave Noelani a glare.
The two girls were at the Prolific Prep Basketball Game, both wearing hoops, the jerseys of the boys they were affiliated with tucked into jeans.
The only difference was their hair.
Sydney was wearing hers down and curly while Noelani had pulled all her hair up into a high ponytail with two medium sized pieces left out to frame her face.
The game had yet to start but a few of the family members of the players were starting to crowd the stands.
"I know!" Sydney shook her phone a little.
"I didn't think I was post worthy. Like we're just talking, we're not dating. That's some dating shit. Right?"
"I mean... Not really?" Sydney said in a questioning tone.
"Should I post something back? Or is liking it enough?"
Just then Jasmine came in and beelined straight for Sydney and Noelani.
"That Instagram post!" Jasmine immediately started.
"You saw it too?" Noelani groaned.
"What? Of course I saw it! Coleman freaking called me about it." Jasmine sat down next to Sydney.
"Ugh, let's just change the subject. My head hurts." Noelani rubbed her forehead.
"We should have a hot girl homecoming." Jasmine responded.
"Nah. One, I can't participate and two, Jalen might not let you do it either." Sydney pointed out as she turned to face Noelani.
Noelani raised an eyebrow, "What makes you say that? I do what I want. The only person I belong to right now is myself."
"People think that you're his girl now." Sydney said.
"'Cause you act like you're his girl." Jasmine continued with a meaningful glance to the number four on Noelani's jersey.
Noelani opened her mouth to answer then closed it.
The words 'Cause I am his girl' were about to leave her mouth and once that happened, she would be unable to take it back.

"He hasn't asked me to be his girl or nothin'. I'm not even sure that I'm going to homecoming with him." Noelani chose to say instead.
"So I'm the only one with a date right now?" Sydney asks.
Noelani shrugs in response.
"Y'all need to get on it. Tell me you have the dress?"
"Of course we have dresses." Jasmine rolled her eyes.
Luckily, the referees had come in and the scoreboard turned on with a loud buzz, distracting Noelani's two best friends.
Noelani opened her phone to go to Jalen's instagram page.
This has a lot of likes.
Noelani double tapped the picture then went to the comments.
Noelani entered the red heart emoji then deleted it, entered it, deleted it then entered it again.
Man up, Noel.
Noelani pressed send on the comment then pressed the power button once so her phone screen could turn black.
The guys on both teams had come out of the locker room for the opening tip-off.
Jalen met in the middle with an opposing player.
"It's ya man." Sydney said in a singsong tone.
Noelani eyed her friend with a playful smile but didn't respond, instead choosing to focus on the game.
Jalen had sent the ball to Jackson who had lobbed the ball to Coleman who quickly gave Prolific their first couple of points.
Noelani had to admire Jalen and Nimari.
Seeing them play together was like seeing a double headed snake.
The two were singlehandedly winning the game for Prolific by themselves.
Noelani watched as Jalen went for a layup but an opposing player purposefully bumped into him and caused Jalen to fall onto his back.
Jalen rapidly stood up and pushed the other player.
The other boy started to back up as Jalen advanced, a vexed expression on his face and saying something that Noelani couldn't hear due to the distance.
Frank stood in front of Jalen forcing him to stop in his tracks as the other coach called a time out.
"Overrated! Overrated! Overrated!" A few people below the girls started to chant, their gazes pointed at Jalen.
Noelani looked down at the hecklers then to Jalen on the court then back to the hecklers.
"How you gonna call someone that you could never beat, overrated? Make it make sense." Noelani wondered out loud in an irritated tone.
A boy who was part of the hecklers, turned to face her, "I could beat him."
"You look four eight. You couldn't beat shit. Be quiet, smurf." Noelani snapped with a scoff.

The boy screwed his face up a little bit but he turned back around to the game and the heckling stopped.
"Stop before they get a tech." Jasmine warns.
"You better stand up for your man." Sydney smirks.
Jalen did a windmill and dunked the ball into the net for the game winning shot.
Noelani stood and plucked the jersey multiple times so it would puff out slightly in pride.
The scoreboard buzzed with the score.
It was seventy seven to forty one, making Prolific Prep's winning streak nine and zero.
The teams shook hands as the crowd started to collect their belongings.
The trio headed down the stairs on the side of the bleachers.
"Are y'all waiting?" Noelani asked as they stood on the bottom level.
"Nah. I told Jordan I would meet him later." Sydney said.
"You're not coming?" Jasmine furrowed her brows.
"She came with her boo." Sydney interjected, "Speaking of," Sydney nodded towards the locker room.
Jalen was sticking his head, the door to the men's locker room slightly ajar.
Once he knew he had Noelani's attention, he gestured closer with a single finger.
"Uh," Noelani turned back to her friends, "I gotta go, I guess."
"Aight. Don't do nothing I wouldn't do." Jasmine called back as Noelani started to walk away.
"Hey." Jalen started, "Can you hold this for a second?" He passed her his basketball backpack.
"Yeah."
"Thanks," Jalen grinned, "Can you give me five minutes?"
Noelani nodded and Jalen kissed her forehead before stepping back into the locker room.
Noelani started to scroll on her phone, scrunching her face up a little at the ridiculous amount of new Instagram followers she had.
There was a laugh at the other end of the court and when Noelani looked up, she noticed that a few of the opposing players had exited the guest locker room.
One of them, a light skinned boy who looked to be about five eleven, was unabashedly staring her down.
Noelani quickly looked away so that he didn't get the wrong idea.
Noelani tightened her eyelids closed in slight irritation when she heard the boy's sneakers shuffle on the floor as he came closer.
"What's up? What's your name?" The boy asked.
"Noel." Noelani replied in a dry tone.
"My name's Will. Well, I was just wondering if maybe I could get your number or sumn? See if we can chill sometime?"
"Uh," Noelani stepped away from the opposing player, tightening her grip on the handle of Jalen's basketball bag slung over her shoulder.
Just then, Jalen emerged from the locker room, his hood up from his hoodie and matching black Nike Tech pants on.
"What's going on?" Jalen asked, glancing towards the other boy.
"Hold on, bruh," Will held up a finger in Jalen's direction, "What do you say?"
"No." Noelani blurted.
Will moved to grab her hand but Noelani backed towards the mat covered wall behind her.
"That's all me, bruh." Jalen stood in front of Noelani protectively, causing the other boy to back up a little.
"What?" Will asked.
"You see who's number she wearing." Jalen responded.
"Relax. Ain't nobody worried about your bitch."
Noelani stepped forward, ready to let him have a piece of her mind when Jalen stepped towards the boy.
"Don't call her no bitch. I'll really stomp you out, right here, right now." Jalen's body was tense, and he looked ready to murder the other boy.
At this time, Nimari, Frank and Saba had walked out.
"What's wrong?" Saba asked.
Will glanced at the four boys, then at his two friends still on the other side of the court, "Nothing."
Then Will walked away.
Jalen wrapped an arm around Noelani's shoulders to pull her into his side slightly, "You good?"
"Yeah. I can handle myself you know?"
"I know. I just didn't like hearing him call you out ya name like that."
"Who's the jealous one now?" Noelani grinned.
"Not the same!" Jalen groaned as they walked out of the gym and towards her car.
"So... That Instagram post?"
Jalen's eyebrows furrowed, "Do you want me to delete it?"
"No. No. I just didn't think I was uh, post worthy." Noelani opened the door to the back seat and tossed his backpack in while Jalen watched.
"What does that mean?"
Dating.
We're not dating so why are you posting me?
"Nothing. I'm overthinking it." Noelani got into the driver's seat, "In fact," Noelani grabbed her phone.
"What are you doing?" Jalen mused.
"You'll see."
