《So Dark the Night: A Paranormal Shifter Romance》Chapter 45

Two days had passed and still Eve had not awakened. I held her as close to my body as possible and yet, even that was not enough to keep her from slipping away from me.
She was my life, my sole existence in this world, if she died, I was pretty sure I would jump in right behind her. The only comfort I got from the pain I was in was the steady rise and fall of her chest. That simple involuntary movement was all that was reassuring me that she was still here with me.
I growled and tucked Eve closer to me when Yvonne reached towards her.
"Easy, Rook." Yvonne tried to soothe my wolf as it tried to protect my mate.
"I just need to see if her fever broke." Yvonne waited for my to comply before attempting to touch her again.
I swiftly nodded my head, allowing Yvonne to touch her forehead.
"She's much cooler than she was yesterday." Yvonne said with a little hope in her voice.
"Then why hasn't she woken up?" I growled and Yvonne jumped back.
I didn't mean to scare her, but with the turmoil I was currently in, I was on the verge of losing it entirely.
"I honestly don't know. She overdid it on the battlefield. First by killing Keller and then by trying to absorb all of the werewolf curse." Yvonne spoke softly.
Yvonne slowly bowed to me and then quietly left the room.
Tears slipped from my eyes as I held Eve close and nuzzled the side of her face with mine. I smiled to myself remembering the first time I had done that to her and the look of pure shock on her face.
"You are a hellion and the strongest person I have ever met. Do not let this defeat you." I whispered in her ear.

She had done exactly what she had set out to do. She had saved everyone of the werewolves, including her brother. She had sacrificed herself to save everyone else, just like a true luna would.
She flinched in my arms and my heart jumped like someone had put an electric jump cable to it.
"Eve?" I called to her softly and ran my fingertips from her jawline all the way down to her hip.
The movement caused her to flinch again.
"Are you trying to molest an unconscious woman?" Her raspy voice spoke and my heart soared to new heights.
"If you open your eyes and look at me, I'll do much more than that." I promised in a husky voice.
"Promises, promises." She said and very slowly turned her head and looked up at me.
My heart felt like it was going to burst. I had to fight the urge to squeeze the life out of her. Instead, I carefully cradle her to my chest and rested my head on top of hers.
"Careful, alpha, you are showing your weakness." Eve smiled up at me and shifted until she was facing me.
"You are my weakness and my strength." I said to her, gripped both sides of her jaw and brought her face to mine until our lips were touching.
"That's one way to wake me up." She smiled as she pulled away from me.
"Roary?!" She screeched.
"He's fine, he's in the infirmary, along with all the other survives." I answered her, but did not allow her to pull too far away from me.
"I want to see him."
She threw her legs to the edge of the bed and tried to stand, but she just wobbled and fell back to the mattress.

"Easy, love. You are still very weak." I scolded her.
"Please. I have to see him." She begged me.
I bent and scooped her up into me arms.
"I will never be able to deny you anything will I?" I huffed as I carried her out of our bedroom and towards the sick room.
"I hope not." She smiled and leaned her head against my shoulder as I carried her.
She stayed that way until we reached the infirmary.
"Eve!" Roary called her name and sat up in the small cot that he was laying on.
I carefully sat her down beside him and she immediately wrapped her arms around his neck and squeezed.
"I knew you could do it!" He laughed and pulled her closer.
"I was so afraid, I thought I lost you." Eve said to Roary.
"Nah, It will take much more than that to kill a hunter like me." Roary jested with her and made her smile.
My back stiffened when I heard footsteps approaching from the other end of the hallway. I knew by its gait that it was Eve's father. I wasn't particularly happy that he was at my home, but I allowed him to be here until his children recovered.
"Eve." Her father said softly as he walked passed me and towards Eve and Roary.
He smiled at her and gripped her chin lightly between his thumb and pointer finger.
"Hi, Pops." She greeted him with a small smile.
Eve's father looked like he was getting emotional, so he cleared his throat to hide it.
"Roary and I will be leaving today, we just wanted to make sure you were going to be alright before we left." He said and motioned for Roary to come with him.
Roary hugged Eve one last time before he stood and started packing his things.
"So soon?" Eve asked with disappoint lining her tone.
"Yeah, we've got a job to do. There are a bunch of rogue goblins wrecking havoc on a town about a days ride from here." Roary said as he stuffed his clothing in a satchel.
"Goblins?" Eve asked and her eyebrows shot up in amusement.
"Don't even think about it." I warned.
I could tell by the way her eyes were dancing that she was intrigued. She stood on wobbly legs and made her way slowly to me. She fell against my chest, but I could tell that this was no longer about weakness, now she was trying to play me.
"But Rook, couldn't we just go check it out? This town sounds like it could be very close to our pack, its our duty to ensure that the pack is safe." She batted her eyelashes at me and I knew I was already a goner.
"You're pushing it, love." I warned her, but at the same time, I couldn't help but pull her closer to me.
"Please." She smiled like she already knew she won.
"You're going to be the death of me." I growled.
She slipped her arms up around my neck, pulled my head down to hers and kissed me so passionately that I almost forgot what we were talking about.
Yep, she was surely going to be the death of me, but what a way to go.

I had never paid much attention to celebrity gossip or what was going on in Hollywood because that was so far from the lifestyle I lived as a poor college student, working as a barista to save up for my own house after graduation. But then, without my knowledge, my Dad submitted my name into a talk show sweepstakes to win a week with Hollywood superstar Dylan Chase, to see what it's like to live like a celebrity for a week. My Dad thought it would be the perfect chance for me to get out of Iowa, see the world and have an adventure for once. I was dreading leaving home, flying for the first time and going by myself all the way to L.A. Plus the idea of spending a week with an arrogant, rich, snobby actor that was probably the worst kind of womanizer didn't sound like my idea of fun. What I found when I got there and met Dylan was the total opposite; a man that was humble, hard working, easy to talk to, and down to earth. Spending a week in Paradise in the guest house of Dylan Chase's Malibu mansion right on the beach, attending a movie premiere on his arm, shopping on Rodeo Drive and eating at five star restaurants was like a dream come true, but sleeping in his bed and falling for a guy from a completely different world than me was never part of the plan because we could never end up together.
