《So Dark the Night: A Paranormal Shifter Romance》Chapter 43

Rook was in front of me, before I even had a chance to react to the stampede of werewolves rushing towards me. His growl was angry, menacing and unlike anything I had ever heard before. It was so powerful that it shook the ground and made the werewolves pause in their tracks. They hesitated for only seconds before a force stronger than Rook made them continue their attack.

I looked up at Keller, who wore a smug smile on his wicked face. He was controlling each of the werewolves somehow.

"Sire bond."

My father appeared next to me in a matter of seconds and braced himself as they werewolves neared.

"What?"

I turned to him confused. His eyes never left the threat before us as he explained.

"He's controlling them with the sire bond. He turned them and now he controls them. The only way to break the bond, is to kill the sire."

My father's words were cut off as the first wave of werewolves crashed against us. Blood flew as we slayed them all. Rook blocked the other werewolves from me, leaving me just enough room to skirt around them and continue on with my mission.

My father confirmed that I was right, in order to stop this whole thing, Keller had to die.

I made it to the bottom of the hill and glanced back one last time before I made the climb. The lycans and hunters were holding their ground, but only just barely. I made my way up the hill faster than I thought humanly possible. I was more than shocked when I reached the top without meeting any more werewolves.

Keller was standing suspiciously calm at the edge of the woods. I very hesitantly made my way towards him. He had another trick up his sleeves, there was no way he would let me get this close to him knowing what he now knew I was capable of.

"You have proven yourself to be quite the pain in my ass." He said smugly in his werewolf form.

My skin crawled every time he spoke in his werewolf voice.

"Just doing my job." I answered as I rounded him like a lioness after her prey.

"Before you battle me, you will have to make it through my strongest solider." He growled viscously.

"I don't really see the point, as I could down the both of you with one swipe of my hand, but by all means, bring it out."

I holstered my weapons and rubbed my hands together, calling my power to the surface.

"Come forward." Keller demanded and looked towards the trees.

My eyes followed his and I braced myself as a large silhouette came forward. My heart fell to the pit of my stomach when the shape took form.

"Roary!" I cried.

His eyes were down cast, like he was too ashamed to look at me.

"You may be more power than I, but your weakness is your heart. Let's see how well you battle against your own flesh and blood. He has orders to fight until the death."

My mouth gapped open and my mind went blank. This couldn't really be happening could it?

"Shift!" Keller demanded Roary.

When Roary hesitated, Keller sneered and focused on him. Roary screamed and dropped to his knees, cradling his temples in between his hands.

"Stop!" I demanded and stepped forward.

Roary screamed louder the closer I got, so I paused.

I watched in utter horror as Roary's bones snapped and twisted until he was a full blown werewolf. He slowly stood up and looked at me with sorrowful eyes.

"He's twice as strong as my other werewolves, you know hunter's blood and all."

Tears pricked my eyes and caused my vision to blur.

"I'm going to kill you for this." I promised Keller as I grind my teeth in anger.

"Not if he kills you first. Tear her to pieces!" Keller yelled.

I saw it instantly when Roary's honey colored eyes, that matched my own, turned a demonic black. Gone was my brother, and in his place was a monster doing its masters bidding.

Roary instantly lunged for me, but I jumped back just in time. My heart hammered so hard in my chest, I had to breath deep just to keep from blacking out.

What was I going to do? I couldn't kill my own brother, but he obviously had no problem trying to kill me while under Keller's influence. I avoided him a second time as his claws just missed my throat.

I lunged for Keller, he was still my main target, even more so now that he controlled my brother, but I wasn't quick enough. The moment my attention was off of Roary, he made his move. He grabbed my shoulders from behind, his sharp claws digging into the flesh of my shoulders and slung me away from Keller and into a nearby tree.

My head collided with the tree with a loud crack and my mind became hazy from the blow. My mind was screaming at me to get up and move before it was too late, but my body wasn't quite getting the message.

I felt rough paws gripping me around my neck and lifting my body from the ground. I kicked and clawed at Roary as he gripped my throat and squeezed.

"That's right, end her!" Keller yelled from somewhere behind Roary.

"Roary." I squeezed his name past the constriction of my throat.

Suddenly his grip loosened just enough for me to suck in much needed air. I looked down at him as his eyes changed back from monstrous to the eyes that had watched over me since I was a little girl.

"I love you little sis, you end this bastard." He said in a scratchy voice.

"I said, kill her!" Keller yelled and tried to gain control of Roary again, but Roary wasn't having it, not this time.

"Fine, if you want kill her, you are of little use to me!" Keller yelled.

It was as if everything after that point moved in slow motion. Roary smiled at me as his eyes misted over in pain. Blood dripped from his eyes, nose, and ears. The scream that left his lips was enough to break my heart entirely in two. Roary fell to the ground taking me with him.

I landed on top of his chest as his body convulsed and he slowly turned back into a human. Blood continued to pool from his eyes and nose and he went deadly still.

"What have you done?" I screamed as I grabbed Roary's head and shook him, willing, demanding that he move.

"I severed the sire bond, without it, he will die." Keller said in a triumphant voice.

"Roary, please." I buried my face in his chest as tears streamed down my face, but he did not move.

"You see, if you kill me, the same thing will happen to all the werewolves that I turned. Without me, they will all die."

I screamed into Roary's chest. Sadness and frustration trying to drown me. I reached up with trembling hands and touch Roary's face once more before standing. A deep anger like I never knew clawed its way from my depths.

"You said my weakness was my heart and you were right, but you just shattered my heart. Now there is nothing holding me back from killing you."
