《So Dark the Night: A Paranormal Shifter Romance》Chapter 33

Frustration overwhelmed me as I watched Rook disappear into the night. I wanted to hear the conversation about the werewolves so badly, but apparently the alphas were members of the he-man woman haters club.

I rolled my eyes at the barbaric customs of the lycans. Thankfully, Rook didn't seem to be in agreement with their customs, because if he were, that would be a deal breaker for me, no matter how I felt about him.

I turned to go inside the house, like a good behaved little mate, but stopped when I heard a piercing scream shattered the quietness of the night. My heart thundered in my chest as I turned towards the direction of the scream.

I hurried towards the cries for help and was instantly more cautious and hesitant that my body guards were no where around. It was strange that Leo or another member of Rook's pack was not flanking me right now. My mind was alerting me to all kinds of dangers, but I could not and would not ignore the terror filled screams.

I slowly approached what looked like a barn, carefully eased the door open and walked inside. My breath caught in my throat as one of the human girls I had seen earlier was being tossed to the ground and her clothes being ripped off by a member of Keller's pack.

I couldn't think straight or even breath, all I saw was red. I jumped on his back before my mind could even catch up with my movements. He growled and tried to knock me off, but I snapped his neck in two before he even had a chance to fight back. His body fell to the ground and I jumped and rolled away from it before it hit the ground.

I reached my hand out to the girl who trembled like a leaf on a tree and scooted as far back away from me as possible.

"It's ok." I soothed. "He can't hurt you anymore."

"What are you?" She asked as her voice cracked with emotion, but someone else spoke up before I could.

"Yes, what are you, indeed?"

I turned towards the voice and was shocked to see Keller casually strolling into the barn. I quickly stood up, putting my body between his and the young girl's. He stopped in front of me, his focus completely on me and not the young girl. I waved my hand, motioning for her to leave. She stood and scampered out of the barn, leaving me alone with Keller.

"I must say, ever since you arrived here, I have been completely fascinated by you. You look and smell like a human, but the dominance and power rolling off of you is captivating. No wonder my werewolves are drawn to you."

"Your werewolves?" My mind sputtered. I figured that he had something to do with what was going on, but I didn't expect him to admit it out loud.

"Yes, they are glorious aren't they?" Keller's smiled wickedly at me.

"That's not the word I would choose for them." I sneered.

Keller rushed towards me and cupped my cheeks in between his thumb and four fingers. I could have easily avoided his assault, but I wasn't quite ready to reveal my own powers, not when he was so willingly offering up the answer I wanted.

I cringed as Keller squeezed my face tighter and brought his face closer to mine. He inhaled my scent deeply and when he pulled away the look of sheer pleasure on his face, had my stomach turning.

"Yes, I agree with my werewolves, you will make a fine luna. You see it's the only thing missing from my pack. Without a luna, my pack is incomplete, but with you as my luna, we will be unstoppable."

"Dominant female, must take to alpha."

I repeated out loud what I had heard the two werewolves say to me, once in Rook's kitchen and the second time through the bathroom door in the female lycan's house.

"That's right. They were on a mission to find the strongest female for my pack and low and behold they kept coming after you."

Keller began to caress my face with his thumb. I snatched away from his touch and took a step back.

"Sorry, I'm taken." I hissed.

"Yes, it was a shock to find out that you were Rook's mate, but after tonight, that will not be a problem."

My entire body froze at his words. What had he done? My face must have reflected my horror, because Keller continued to explain himself.

"What better way to rid the area of all the alphas than to get them together at once and ambush them? My werewolves are so great in number, not even the alphas can stop them." Keller grinned wickedly.

"That will never happen, Rook will smell them from a mile away." I argued as I stepped back, planning my escape through the door. I had to get to Rook and warn him.

"Oh, will he?"

Keller laughed as he stepped back, tore his shirt from his torso and shifted. My heart skipped so many beats I feared it had stopped working entirely. Keller had shifted, but not into a lycan.

He was a werewolf...

My mind would not except what my eyes were seeing. How had a lycan turned into a werewolf and how was he capable of shifting? A werewolf didn't shift.

A deep throaty laugh came from the abomination before me. He was the biggest, most awful thing I had ever seen. No wonder Leo couldn't smell the werewolf that was inside the house, because the lycan's in this pack were the werewolves.

"There's only one thing left to do to ensure your place as my luna. You must become one of us. Hold still, this won't hurt... for long."

Keller opened his jaws, showing his razor sharp teeth, but I didn't give him the opportunity to sink his teeth into me. I jumped out of his reach, rolled and picked up a nearby pitchfork. Keller's monstrous face betrayed his confusion at my speed and agility.

"A huntress." Keller growled, realization finally dawning on him.

"Not just a huntress, a Del Val." I corrected him.

His eyes swirled with hate.

"Pitty. You would have made an excellent luna, but unfortunately, I will not lower myself that far down. So instead, you die."

"Alpha!"

I tensed even further as another werewolf ran into the barn stopping Keller's attack.

"The alphas have broken through our trap. They are on their way here!" The werewolf said as he trembled with fear.

Keller cursed under his breath and I breathed a sigh of relief. Rook was ok.

A few more werewolves ran into the barn, all awaiting instructions from their alpha.

"Tonight we flee, but this is far from over." His eyes shifted to mine.

"Take care of her." He growled.

I braced myself as three werewolves jumped on me.
