《So Dark the Night: A Paranormal Shifter Romance》Chapter 18

I followed Yvonne as she went into my office and closed the door behind us.

"How long have you know that she was your mate?" Yvonne asked.

That was just like her, quick and straight in for the kill.

"What makes you think that?"

It was stupid to play it off with ignorance after what she just witnessed, but it was worth a try.

"Don't insult my intelligence by making me state the obvious. I had my suspicions ever since the first time you call me to treat her and she smelled like you, but there is no denying now after what I just saw. I purposely had her wash and change her clothes to see your reaction."

Anger bubbled through my veins at Yvonne's admission. She did all of that on purpose to provoke my wolf and we fell for it hook, line and sinker.

"So how long?" Yvonne repeated her question.

"From the first time I saw her, smelled her."

It was hard for me to admit out loud what I had known all along. I sank down into my chair.

"What do you plan on doing about it? Because you obviously have't told her anything about it, but based on what I just witnessed with my own eyes, she feels the bond too, human or not."

I didn't know if that made the situation better or worse. I leaned my head against he back of my chair and closed my eyes.

"There's nothing to do about it. She's a huntress and I am a lycan. I plan on denying her and breaking the bond."

"How's that going for you?" Yvonne laughed at me.

I growled at her in warning and she stopped laughing.

"Breaking a bond is not easy, especially with a fated mate. It can be deadly and I mean that literally."

Yvonne's warning struck a nerve in me. I wasn't afraid to die, but I didn't want anything to happen to Eve.

"It's not going to work out. I hate her kind, especially the Del Val's after what they did to my brother."

"Was she apart of that?"

"I don't know." I answered briefly.

"Sounds like to me you need to spend some alone time with her. Talk to her, she's actually fairly easy to talk to for a human." Yvonne smiled and placed her hand on my cheek.

"How exactly am I supposed to accomplish that?"

Was my resolve actually starting to crumble? My wolf was happy that I was even contemplating spending time with Eve.

"I think you owe the girl dinner after the sexual harassment you just committed against her. I would start there."

Yvonne grinned wickedly and stared to walk out of my office.

"Yvonne, keep this to yourself. I don't want anyone knowing that she is my mate."

"Your secrets are always safe with me, but if you don't hurry and do something, everyone is going to know. With a bond this powerful, you're likely to go feral if your wolf doesn't get what it wants and soon."

I swallowed and Yvonne eyed me with concern. I knew she spoke the truth, because even as strong as I was it was becoming more and more difficult to keep my wolf in check, especially where Eve was concerned.

Yvonne walked out the door and I stood up from my desk, but hesitated. I was nervous, the big, bad alpha was nervous about asking a girl out to dinner. I walked down the hall and into my room to change into a clean shirt, but if I admitted it, I was just procrastinating.

With a deep breath, I walked over to her door and knocked. I heard her shuffling around and then approach the door.

She opened the door and just one look at her had my wolf stirring with anticipation, but this time, I was in control. I stomped him back down until he was nothing more than a distant whimper.

Eve's eyes accessed me, her honey colored pools watching my every move. She was probably wondering if I was going to pounce on her again.

"I told Yvonne before she left, I was going to have to get a makeover more often if it has that affect on males." She smiled, trying to break the ice, but a low growl rumbled in my throat with her mentioning attracting other males.

I cleared my throat to try to disguise the growl that slipped past my defenses.

"I was going to cook myself a steak. I know it's late, but I was going to see if you wanted to join me."

There I said it. How difficult was that? She eyed me for a second before answering.

"Sure, I could always eat, especially if it's steak."
