《So Dark the Night: A Paranormal Shifter Romance》Chapter 16

Unfortunately, we didn't make it far down the hall before we ran into Yvonne.

"What are you two up to?" She asked with a micheviuos gleam in her eyes.

"Just going to listen to the council meeting." Mia said innocently and shrugged her shoulders like it was an everyday occurrence.

"Way to play it smooth." I nudged her in the back for outing us to Yvonne.

Yvonne smiled at Mia and placed her hand against her back and shoved her forward.

"You should be in school at this hour and believe me, there is nothing happening in the council meeting that isn't already known to all. They are discussing how the werewolves got inside and how to stop them."

That was a subject I was very interested to hear, but seeing as Yvonne was in a sharing mood, I decided to try my luck at asking her a few questions.

"How did the werewolves get inside?" I chimed in.

She eyed me for a moment, her wise eyes assessing me before she finally answered.

"If you ask me, it had to be an inside job. How else would they have known our weakest vantage point?"

"Why are they attacking anyway? Isn't the alpha responsible for turning them in the first place?"

There I said it. That question had been burning on my tongue ever since the first werewolf cornered me in the kitchen. If Rook was responsible for turning the boys into monsters, then why were they attacking their alpha's home and pack? Shouldn't they be working together towards whatever diabolical plan they were trying to carry out?

Mia gasped as the words left my mouth and stomped off in the opposite direction like I had just pulled a rug from under her feet.

"What?" I looked at Yvonne for explanation.

"Maybe it's about time you got your head out of the clouds and join the rest of us back down here on earth." Her voice was hard and serious.

"I know you haven't spent very much time with Rook, but in the short time you have been here, does he seem like the type to change innocent children into those abominations?"

Her question was the same that I had been asking myself since I got here. Rook may be an alpha, strong, hard, set in his ways, but there was a kindness about him, a compassion that was not easily missed.

"I don't know what to think." I answered honestly with a shrug. "All I know is that only a bite from an alpha, a very strong alpha, could produce the werewolves I have encountered lately."

"He may be the strongest, but he is certainly not the only alpha around. Besides, Rook dishes out severe punishment to anyone in his pack, who dares to change a human into werewolf. It's not allowed. Period. Which is why Mia was so mad when you said what you did. Come on, we will discuss this more along the way."

She turned and headed towards the door and I followed. I desperately wanted to know more about the other alphas. The mere thought of there being more around didn't sit right in my stomach.

"Where are we going?" I asked as I caught up with her.

"Shopping dear, you can't possibly continue to go around looking like that."

She eyed me as I pulled up the loose sweats that were starting to slide off of my hips. I didn't argue in the least, I honestly didn't care what I wore, but maybe this was my chance to get some much desired answers to my questions.

"Why does it matter to you, what I wear?"

"It doesn't. I'm testing out a theory." She never looked at me as she continued to trudge forward.

"What theory?" I asked as I stopped and waited for her to answer me.

"Never you mind about that. I thought you wanted to know more about the alphas?"

And that was all the bait I needed to continue following her every step.

"Are you actually going to tell me?" I asked almost astonished.

"I don't see why not. It's not like you have any idea where the other packs are."

"Packs? As in multiple?" I said with a gulp. This was worse than I had originally thought.

"There are three other packs on this side of the continent. None as big or as strong as this one or as...unusual."

I waited for her to continue when she paused, when she did not, I egged her on.

"What so unusual about this pack?"

"This didn't start off as a pack. It was just a place where all the misfits and outcasts went when they were kicked out of their packs."

Great. I landed in the lycan pack for convicts and outcast. How lovely.

"So there are three other alphas?"

"Yes and it's Rook's theory that one of them are responsible for the werewolves."

I opened my mouth to ask more questions, but she cut me off.

"Here we are!"

She stopped in front of a store front. My mouth fell open when I glanced further up the road.

"You have your own mini town?" I asked surprised.

I saw a store label grocery, hardware and the one we were in front of was called Maci's Fashion.

"Of course, don't you? It's not very practical for a lycan to just wonder into a human village and go shopping now is it? So, we have our supplies shipped to us to stock our stores."

A thought crossed my mind at this realization. I wondered if Roary could track and figure out where all of these large order of supplies were being sent to? This would tell us where the other lycan villages were. Maybe I should stick around as long as needed to gather more information about the infamous lycans.

I heard a low growl as we entered the store, a fact that I was quickly getting used to. I rolled my eyes when I realized that the one behind the counter was none other than the blond I had the encounter with a while ago. One look at me and she was practically foaming at the mouth. The feeling was mutual.

"Put a sock in it Maci, the human just needs some clothes."

"Everything here is too good for her." Maci growled.

I opened my mouth to tell her exactly where she could shove her clothes, when Yvonne spoke up.

"Would you rather she continued to wear Rook's clothing?"

"Fine." She turned her back to us. That seemed to shut her up quickly.

"Are all luna's that possessive over their mates?" I whispered to Yvonne as she started to shuffle through the clothes on the rack.

"Child, Rook doesn't have a luna. That's why all the she wolves are so crazy. All of them want a piece of that meat."

I couldn't help the smile that exploded across my face and I hoped that Yvonne thought I was smiling because of the way she worded her answer. But after catching her micheviuos smile directed at me, I wasn't so sure.

"Here. Try these on."

Yvonne shoved an arm load of clothes at me and I stared at her in astonishment.

"I'm not exactly a dress wearing kind of girl and I don't have any money. How do you expect me to pay for all of this?"

"Don't worry, we will simply put it on Rook's tab." She said with a wink.
