《So Dark the Night: A Paranormal Shifter Romance》Chapter 15

I forced myself away from the comfort of his arms. My heart was beating just as hard as my head was pounding at this point. I felt like I was betraying my heritage, my family and most of all, my mother.
How could I allow myself to be comforted and taken care of by a lycan, an alpha lycan no less? Worst of all, why did I feel so comfortable and safe in his arms? I forced myself to stand and thankfully, he did not try to stop me or belittle my strength by trying to help me. Why did he have to be so patient? Why couldn't he do something to piss me off? I really needed to hate him right now.
"I'll let you shower." He walked out without another word.
I washed off the best I could. It was kind of difficult to wash myself throughly with me having to lean my body against the shower wall for support. Once that difficult task was complete, I wrapped myself in a towel and walked out into the bedroom.
On my bed was a clean pair of clothes, his clothes again. Wasn't there a she wolf around that was close to my size? There had to be. I don't know why I had to keep wearing his clothes. Not that I minded oversized clothes, what I minded was his scent. I was already becoming addicted to his smell. I proved that point by bringing the clothes to my nose and inhaling deeply. Yep, his clothes still smelled like a dream.
I put his clothes on and climbed into bed. I was exhausted and needed sleep desperately but, I was afraid to get too comfortable. With a concussion I needed to awake up every few hours and I hadn't figured out how I was going to achieve that task by myself.

A knock sounded at the door and I bid whoever it was to enter. Rook walked back into my room with Mia in his arms.
"Sorry, she refused to go to sleep until she saw you were ok for herself." Rook said with a slight gleam in his eyes.
I smiled at Mia and held my arms open as Rook sat her down on the foot of the bed. She bounded towards me and I gasped as her little body collided with my sore one.
"Sorry." She murmured.
She scooted under the covers with me and snuggled close to my side.
"Conner said that Hunters only protect humans, but that's not true. You protected me from the werewolf." Mia said with a pout.
"That's right. Hunters protect anyone who needs protecting from monsters."
I smiled at her comment and looked up at Rook for his reaction, but as usual, he was emotionless.
"That's enough Mia, both of you need some rest."
Rook's deep voice broke through the tranquility of the room. Mia started to whimper and pulled the covers over her head to hide.
"But I'm scared. I want to stay with Eve!"
"Mia." Rook's voice had a gentle warning to it, reminding her it was not smart to argue with him. I however had no problem arguing with him.
"I think after the evening we had, she can stay with me for the night." Now my voice left no room for argument.
"Can't fight all of you." He said defeated and left the room.
Mia and I giggled and got comfortable in the bed. I must have been tired, the next thing I knew I felt a muzzle nuzzle one of my arms. I opened my eyes with a start, but calmed when I realized it was Rook in his wolf form.

His golden eyes shown bright in the dark room. He blinked at me a few times, look over at Mia and then bounded from the room. I looked at the clock on my nightstand. I had been sleeping for about three hours. I guess Rook had taken it upon himself to wake me to make sure I hadn't slipped into a coma or fallen unconscious.
I smiled slightly to myself. I guess he was true to his words. He watches out for those that are in his household.
He came in a few more times during the night to wake me up. Sometimes as a wolf, sometimes as a person. Funny, that neither forms disturbed me.
The last time, I heard the door opening and watched as he walked in. He was swift and quiet, a true predator. He sat down on the bed beside me and I stared up at him.
"I think you are out of danger now, I'll let you sleep the rest of the night."
He surprised me by placing his hand on my cheek. It was rough and calloused, but his touch soothed me and I quickly fell back into a peaceful sleep.
"Eve! Wake up!"
I was being shaken to death by two small hands what felt like moments later. I faked deep sleeping as she shook me harder. Once she was in position, I flipped her over and attacked her with tickles. Mia squealed with laughter and beg me for mercy. After a while, I let her up.
"Come on, Eve. We have to go." Mia grabbed my hands and started to pull.
"Where are we going, exactly." I asked as I got out of the bed.
"The council is meeting in Papa Rook's office. Let's go see what is going on." Mia continued to tug on my arm.
"I don't think they are going to let me go in and listen." I told her as I planted my feet and stopped her.
"They will if they don't know you are there. I have a secret hiding spot."
Mia's wicked smile was contagious and I had to admit, learning some lycan secrets was very, very tempting.
"Hurry up! I sent Draco to go get us some breakfast. We only have a little while before he comes back!" Mia rushed me towards the door.
"You little minx! You mean to tell me, you got rid of the guard?" I asked astonished as I opened the door and sure enough, there was no one on the other side.
Mia smiled as we rushed down the hallway.
"You're a girl after my own heart."
