《So Dark the Night: A Paranormal Shifter Romance》Chapter 14

The longer I sat still, the more my vision started to clear. I glanced around at the carnage in the room and then down at my clothes that were soaked through with blood. I was glad Rook made Mia cover her eyes, a small child had no business seeing something like this.

"There she is. I was hoping you survived the attack."

I heard Conner's cooky voice and closed my eyes. I didn't have the patience nor the stamina to deal with him at the moment. I opened my eyes as I heard him approach. He bent down in front of me and gripped my chin in between his fingers, forcing me to look up at him.

"The alpha had to come save your ass, I see."

I followed his eyes over to the werewolf's body whose throat was torn out. I snatched my chin from his grip, but I quickly regretted the hasty movement when my head started to swim again and queasiness overtook me. I wouldn't be upset if I threw up all over Conner right now.

A low growl at the door had Conner rushing backwards and had me looking in that direction. Rook walked back through the door and maybe it was my hazy mind, but I couldn't tare my eyes away from him. He wore nothing but a pair of baggy black sweat pants, that clung perfectly to his trim hips and enhanced the perfect V of his ab muscles as it disappeared below his pants, I snatched my eyes up before they ventured lower. My cheeks burning with shame.

His wash board abs and sculpted arm muscles were on display for all to see and I had the longing to run my fingers over the hills and valleys of his muscles. Yep, I had defiantly hit my head too hard. I closed my eyes in an effort to break the lycan spell I was under.

I opened my eyes when I heard the clicking of heels and saw the blond from earlier walk in behind Rook. I also didn't miss the way her eyes ran longingly over his body.

"We need to talk, alpha, we have to discuss the possibility of another attack." Conner cleared his throat as Rook continued in my direction. I was getting antsy, the closer he got.

"Later." His deep voice rumbled in his chest, making my toes curl.

"But, alpha..."

"I said, later!" His voice boomed with dominance and Conner couldn't help but bow his head in submission.

He bent towards me without another word and scooped me up into his arms like I weighed no more than a feather. I gasped and threw my arms around his neck as the world began to spin again.

He marched me pass the blond and I saw her eyes simmer with hate and heard her low warning growl come from her. The petty side of me wanted to lay my head on his shoulder and rub the fact that he was carrying me in her face, but the huntress in me, would not allow me to do so.

Rook took me back to my room and into the bathroom. He sat me on my feet, but kept his arms around me when I started to sway.

"I'm fine." I said and swatted his hands away.

He eyed me wearily as I braced myself against the wall. He walked over to the shower and turned the water on.

"You'll be alright?" He asked.

I nodded my head.

"Get cleaned up and I'll go and find you some clean clothes."

He left the bathroom and closed the door behind him. I waited a while until I was sure he was gone, then raced over to the toilet and spewed the contents of my stomach. I gripped the sides of the porcelain throne to keep myself upright as another wave of nausea hit me. The throbbing pain in my head was so severe that my eyes watered.

I didn't hear him approach, but I felt Rook behind me. He gathered up my hair and pulled it back from my face. This was probably the most embarrassing moment of my life. I didn't like others to see my weakness, especially not him.

Once there was nothing left in my stomach to come up, he pulled me back to his chest and for a while, I just leaned against him. I felt him run his hand against the back of my scalp and I hissed in pain when his palm collided with the gash at the back of my head.

"You have a concussion." He said.

"I agree with your diagnosis." I kept my eyes closed out of fear I would get sick again if I opened my eyes and everything started to spin again.

I startled when I felt him lean in and nuzzle his face against the side of mine. Call me crazy, but I was actually comforted by his actions. It wasn't sexual at all, it was like he needed the physical touch to ensure that I was alright.

"I'm sorry." He whispered in my ear.

My eyes shot open in shock.

"Sorry for what?" I asked dumbfounded.

"I should have been there for you, it's my fault you were hurt."

"Please, my head already hurts. You're going to have to explain to me why this is your fault and why you would feel the need to protect me at all."

He paused for way too long. I leaned my head back to try to look into his eyes, but he turned his head away.

"You are a guest in my house, therefore it was my responsibility to keep you safe."

"Guest or prisoner?" I scoffed.

"Either way, anyone under my roof is protected by me."

I felt like he was keeping something from me, his words said one thing, but his actions said another, but I didn't have the energy to argue with him.

"You're not going to tell me what I did wrong or scold me for going up against a werewolf by myself?" I asked as I leaned further into him.

That was the response I was used to when it came to the men in my life. I was a girl, it was foolish to try that on your own and a bunch of other degrading responses I typically got from Roary and my father.

"No, I was actually proud of the way you slew that beast."

I was shocked to the core at his response as he continued to nuzzle the side of my face. His course stubbled face against my sensitive skin sent an electrical shock all the way down to my toes.

"I want to thank you for protecting Mia. She means the world to me."

His husky voice rumbled with gratitude.

"You're welcome." I said quietly.

I needed to get out of here and fast. The longer I was here with this lycan, the more confused I was becoming.
