《So Dark the Night: A Paranormal Shifter Romance》Chapter 8

Once he had disappeared up the dark stairwell my body collapsed and I sank to the floor. I shook uncontrollably. I had never been so scared in my entire life.
I breathed deep, willing myself to calm down. I knew he was the alpha just as soon as he entered the room. He was massive in both height and built and dominance rolled off of him like waves in an ocean.
When he growled, my body naturally wanted to buckle and bow at him, but that would be a cold day in hell before I let that happen.
I rubbed my neck where he had brushed his stubbly cheek. It still tingled where he touched me. Anger simmered in my belly for allowing him to get so close and allowing him to actually touch me, but I think my body had gone into shock.
He was the deadliest thing I had ever come across. His lethalness was camouflaged in a gorgeous male body, one that would make any female's mouth water. His body was rock solid and rippled with muscles. His dark messy, short hair and matching stubble was a distraction for his prey, but nothing compared to his hazel eyes that had a golden glow when he got angry.
What upset me most however, was that I had plunged a silver knife into his heart, the same way I had the werewolf and he pulled it out and tossed it aside like it was nothing more than a splinter. I understood now why father had been so afraid to go up against an alpha, nothing I had ever seen compared to him.
How was I going to kill him when I didn't even know how? I had to put an end to this monster and his plight before he harmed any more boys.

I heard the door above as its hinges squeaked. I closed my eyes and released a frustrated sigh. I couldn't deal with too much more after my encounter with the alpha.
I stilled as I heard footsteps descending and was instantly glad when I was positive it wasn't the alpha again. These footsteps were lighter and dainty. I heard sniffing from around the corner and then a small growl that reminded me of an angry puppy.
I saw a flash of strawberry blond curls as the head peaked around the corner and then ducked back out of sight. It growled again, this time becoming bolder and stepping out where I could see her completely.
I hated lycan's with a deep passion, but the little one before me might sway me slightly, very slightly.
It was a little female with messy curls and sparkling blue eyes. She wore a pair of blue jean overalls with holes in the knees and a small white shirt underneath. Her feet were bare and dirty.
I bit my lip to hide a smile. She was trying to intimidate me with her growls. She continued to sniff and walked closer to the bars.
"Who might you be?" I said sweetly.
She gasped at my voice and dashed back behind the wall with a small yelp.
"I am a mighty wolf and I've come to eat you before you hurt Papa Rook." The small voice threatened from behind the wall.
I couldn't help but laugh at her words.
"Who is Papa Rook and are you sure you want to eat me?" I asked with a smile.
She peaked her head around the corner and gave me a once over.
"Papa Rook is the mighty alpha." She said with an overdramatic voice and spread her arms far and wide to prove her point.

So this was the alpha's pup. He must have a luna as well then, which would make his pack that much more difficult to put an end to. My mind absorbed all this information.
"I see." I say as I watch her tiptoe closer.
"Do you really chop lycan's heads off?" Her voice becomes timid and her eyes mist over.
Was that how you killed a lycan? Could be, but I didn't know how reliable that information was coming from a small child.
"I can honestly say that I have never chopped a lycans head off, nor have I ever killed one."
"Really?" She piped up at my response.
"Scout's honor." I say and cross my heart.
It was true, I had killed numerous other beast, but not a lycan, not yet anyway.
She seemed satisfied with my answer and plopped down in front of the bar. She pulled a cookie from her pocket and shoved it in her mouth with her grubby hands.
"You're pretty." She said between bites of cookie. "But you smell bad."
I smiled at her honesty. I imagine I did reek. Between the blood, dirt, sweat and vomit, I was sure smell bad was putting it nicely.
"I've had a bad night."
I glanced upwards to make sure we were alone.
"Do you think you could help me out and get me some water and maybe some bandages for my boo-boos?"
I didn't want to get her in trouble, but if I was going to find a way to get out of here I needed to be stronger and I couldn't do that until I healed some of my wounds and at least got some water.
She eyed me suspiciously for a second and I put the icing on the cake by giving her my sweetest smile.
She returned my smile with the cutest dimples and my heart cracked a little at my deception. She nodded and stood up. Brushed the dirt from her pants and turned to go back up the stairs.
"Let's keep this our little secret." I reminded her.
She stopped and turned back and looked at me.
"Like friends?" She asked in a small voice.
"Like friends." I smiled.
She back tracked and came back to the bars. She looked at me like she was thinking really hard about something. Finally she slipped her hand in her pocket and pulled out another cookie. She carefully shoved her little hand thorough the bar and held to cookie out to me.
I carefully scooted my way towards her, careful not to spook her. I took the cookie and and inhaled it deeply.
"Chocolate chip. My favorite." I said and took a bite.
"Mine too." She smiled and skipped up the stairs.
Yep, I felt like the biggest jackass that had ever walked the planet at the moment for taking advantage of such a sweet little one.
