《So Dark the Night: A Paranormal Shifter Romance》Chapter 5

The silence was unbearable with both my father and Roary gone. I glanced around nervously, but my eyes kept coming back to the werewolf's body. A pang hit my stomach every time I looked at it.

Well one good thing about my injuries was that I wouldn't have to help bury the body, no Roary and my father could take care of all that digging.

I pull the shotgun Roary had left with me closer to my chest. I wasn't usually this jumpy when left on my own, but my injuries, particularly my broken ankle, made me vulnerable and that was not a feeling I liked.

I heard a slight noise up ahead, which I would had missed entirely if the night hadn't been so quiet. Not even a frog croaked, which was understandable after what went down here.

"Stop messing around, Roary, come pick me up off of this ground." I groaned.

My heart flopped in my chest, like a fish on dry land, when a massive grey wolf stepped into the opening, instead of my brother. Its stealthiness was completely unnerving. It was like a phantom, no sound at all.

It looked over at the werewolf body and then back at me. I saw its noise twitch as it inhaled my scent. Its ears went flat against its head and it bared its teeth at me.

Was this the alpha lycan that was responsible for turning the werewolf? I wasn't going to wait around to find out. I slowly lifted the shotgun and braced it against my shoulder. It was full of silver pellets, I would put an end to him quickly with one shot.

It continued to look at me, not pouncing, even though its life was in danger. A sharp blow nailed me in the back of the head from behind. My world exploded as I tried to force my brain to tell my finger to pull the trigger. But it was no use, the world around me was growing dark, no mater how hard I fought it, eventually everything went black and I felt my face hit the ground.

The throbbing pain in the back of my head and my ankle made me queasy. I refused to open my eyes even though I was regaining consciousness. I was laying on the cold ground, my cheek stung and I dug my finger tips across the cold surface. My foggy mind panicked when I felt hard stone underneath me and not dirt. I wasn't in the woods any longer. What had the lycan done to me?

The thought had me shooting straight up, which was a mistake. A sharp pain shot through the back of my head and I doubled over and spewed the contents of my stomach.

"She doesn't look so though to me. Are you sure she is a huntress?"

I forced my body to scoot back into the shadows as my eyes danced around, trying to find the source of the voice. I blinked a couple of times at my surrounding. I was in a dungeon of some sort and there were two men on the other side of the bars looking down at me in disgust.

"I somehow missed the fact that I fell through a time portal and landed in medieval times." I said.

Sarcasm was my go to in stressful situations and this was the most stressed I had ever been in my entire life.

I eyed the men carefully. They looked like normal men, not lycans. No, scratch that, they looked like two hunks with beautiful bronzed skin and muscles for miles. Yep, they definitely were not human, humans couldn't look like that even if they tried.

"She is. I watched her take down that werewolf in a matter of minutes." The blond one spoke up.

"I don't understand why you brought her here? What do you plan on doing with her?" The darker skinned one asked.

"We wait for alpha to return. He'll decide her fate."

So, neither one of these were the alpha. I shudder to think what he looks like if he is anything like these two.

"What do we have here?"

A voice growled softly from the shadows and another large figure emerged. Both of the men stepped aside to allow him to approach the bars. He was larger than the other two, but only slightly so, with dirty blonde hair and a scar that etched a path down the side of his face. The way he was looking at me made a shudder run straight down my spine.

I eased further into the shadows until my back collided with cold stone wall.

"A huntress." One of the other two spoke up.

"How intriguing." He stated with a small wicked smile. "Open the gate."

My heart fell to the pit of my stomach as they did what he asked without hesitation. He walked into the cell and I readied myself to fight to the bitter end, but I waited and watched his every move. Patience. My father's words echoed in my head, even though my body was screaming for me to attack.

He reached down and gripped the collar of my shirt and pulled me to my feet like I weighed no more than a loaf of bread. I gritted my teeth as I stood on my broken ankle, there was no way in hell I was going to lean into him to take the pressure off of my ankle.

"So strong." He purred.

He put his face close to mine and inhaled deeply.

"And your scent is intoxicating. Pity we have to kill you."

He underestimated me, just like most creatures and people do. You never judge a book by its cover. My size and womanly wiles often made a man put down his guard around me, just as this one did. His mistake.

I gripped the wrist of the hand that was holding my collar, twisted and squeezed it until it snapped under my grip. His eyes engulfed in anger and began to glow. I shoved him back so hard that his back and head collided with the bars. His body sank to the ground.

He was on his feet in seconds. I had done a thorough job of pissing him off, so now I awaited his backlash and hoped within all hopes that I had enough strength left in me to still be alive at the end of this.

"Conner, we wait on the alpha."

The blond from earlier entered the cell and placed his hand on Conner's shoulder, stopping him from attacking.

So, this wasn't the alpha either. He must have been higher up the hierarchy based on the way he was acting, but he was still not at the top. He angrily shoved the other lycan's hand from his shoulder, but he did seem to collect himself a bit.

"Just wait little huntress. We will have round two again very soon and next time, you will not get the upper hand."

He walked out of the cell and closed the door with a loud bang.

"I wouldn't bank on that if I were you." I hissed and watched him shake with fury as they all three left me in the cold darkness.
