《So Dark the Night: A Paranormal Shifter Romance》Chapter 2

"Took you long enough. What happened?"

My brother, always the impatient one.

"If you think you could do it any faster, why don't you do it yourself?" I snapped back.

There was fat chance of that happening. Roary and my father never dealt with "the people", no, they left all the socializing to me.

"Quiet, both of you."

My father got out of his truck and stretch his long legs as he came towards us. I marveled him everyday, he still had the height and strength of an oak tree.

"What did they say?"

"Something has been stealing boys from their homes for over a month now."

"Boys?"

My brother echoed and scratched his curly brown head.

"They think a werewolf is stealing boys?"

"It's no werewolf and I doubt very seriously it's a lycan either. They have no use for young boys." My father stated.

"I don't think so either, a succubus maybe? But, those creatures don't normally take their victims." I say with a shrug.

"But the town's people swear they saw a wolf that walks upright."

"Humans, they wouldn't know a werewolf if it came up and bit them in the ass." My brother rolled his eyes.

"Well, let's go find out for ourselves, shall we?"

I throw my leg over my Harley and grab my helmet.

"Where are you going this time of day?"

My brother asks as he hops on his own bike.

"There's a boy who supposedly escaped a werewolf attack. I'm going to see him."

The sheriff was waiting for us up the road, because I warned him that approaching my father could mean his demise and I wasn't joking about that.

We drove for a while until the sheriff stopped in front of a nice looking two story white vinyl house. I grabbed my medical bag and walked in after the sheriff. Roary and my father of course waited outside.

"You're a doctor?"

The sheriff asked indicating to my bag.

"I am." I answered with a short nod.

Before I received my huntress abilities I completed my medical degree, my dreams had always been to become a doctor to help people, but life had other plans. Now I was sort of a supernatural healer. There was a fine line between what I had learned in school and the remedies needed to fix something caused by the monsters that plagued our world.

Before we even reached the stairs that lead to the door, I heard the boys anguished screams. My heart skipped a beat, imagining what the poor thing must be going through.

The sheriff knocked on the door and a very tired looking man with dark circles under his eyes opened the door.

"Cliff, this is Evelyn, she is a doctor that specializes in what your boy is going through."

I breathed a sigh of relief that the sheriff introduced me that way and not the Huntress. That title tends to set parents on their guard.

Cliff opened his mouth to say something, but his boy's screams cut him off.

"I'll see my way up. It will be best if the two of you stayed down here."

I rushed passed the two men and bounded up the stairs. I knew I had reached the boys door when I saw a woman with a chair seated outside the door. Tears streaked their way down her cheeks.

"Ma'am. My name is Evelyn, I'm a doctor. Will you allow me to see your son?"

I knew she was his mother by the sheer pain written across her face. She leaped from her seat at my words.

"Please! Help him! No one will help him. The doctors at the hospital will not even allow us inside." She screeched as tears anew flowed down her face.

"I'll do everything I can." I assured her.

"But, I need you to go down stairs and get you something to eat. Your husband is down stairs with the sheriff. I need a moment alone with your son."

"Henry. His name is Henry." The mother said with a small smile.

"Henry." I repeated with a smile that I hoped was reassuring.

I watched as she made her way downstairs. I turned towards the door and placed my hand upon his doorknob. There was no telling what I was going to find on the other side of this door. I had to be ready for anything.

I turned the knob and slowly pushed the door open.

"Henry. I'm Doctor Evelyn. Can I come in?"

I did not get a response. I glanced towards the bed, but there was no one there. I heard labored breathing coming from the floor on the opposite side of the bed. I quickly shut the door behind myself and flipped the lock, trapping myself inside with the boy. With the door closed, the room was engulfed in darkness.

"I'm going to open this blind, Henry, so I can see you better."

My movements were slow as I backed my way towards the window. I refused to turn my back to him. I reached for the blind and pulled it open. Light flooded the room and a heard a very unnatural growl come from the boy.

I eased my way towards him, my heart dropping to my stomach when I saw him. His arms and legs bent unnaturally and his fingers and toes where elongated and began to bend like they were becoming claws.

"Oh no." I silently breathed.

I had never seen a werewolf in person, but I had heard the numerous tales from my father about what the bite did to a human body and there was no mistaking what I saw. Henry was turning into a werewolf.

I heard a cracking sound as his legs bent and snapped, further taking shape of a wolf. The scream that escaped Henry was gut retching. I felt hot tears prick my eyes as I threw open my medical bag. I could not stop the transformation, but I could ease his pain.

I pulled morphine into a syringe. I approached him slowly, grabbed onto his thigh and jabbed him with the needle. He swiped his claws at me, but I moved out of his reach.

He hissed and howled until the drug slowly starting taking effect. His pain filled, glassy eyes became somewhat clearer as the pain subsided.

"What's happening to me?" He croaked with a raspy voice.

I knelt down beside him and grabbed his deformed hand.

"Shhh... everything will be ok. I need you to take a few deep breaths and tell me exactly what happened to you." I cooed.

Everything certainly was not going to be ok. There was nothing I could do for him, other than ease some of his pain.

"A wolf monster. He, he came into my room and tried to force me to go with him. I fought him. We made so much noise that it awoke my mother and father..."

Henry gritted his teeth as one of his arms snapped.

"Take your time." I brushed a cloth against his sweaty brow.

"It got spooked, but before it left it bit me and said you will be one of us."

Spoke? My mind jumbled with confusion. Werewolfs and lycans did not speak. Lycan's couldn't speak when in wolf form and a werewolf was more monster than man, they did not have the intelligence to think or speak when the monster took over their bodies.

"Tell me Henry, the wolf that bit you, was it a very large wolf or did it look like a wolf humanoid?"

"Wolf humanoid." He sputtered as his body began to convulse.

This didn't make any sense. A werewolf couldn't turn a human into another werewolf. What the hell was happening in this town? Surely it was a lycan and the boy was just so scared that his mind made him see a wolf monster. A lycan actually looked exactly like a regular wolf, just much bigger and stronger.

Blood began to drip from Henry's nose and mouth. Tears streamed down my face as I reached into my bag and pulled out another needle. There was only one thing for me to do at this point.

I pulled a vial from my bag and swirled the silver liquid around and then filled the syringe with it. I swallowed the bile that burned the back of my throat as I injected it into his thigh.

I scooted behind him and pulled his back to my chest and placed my cheek on top of his head as I held him tightly in place. He was strong with the wolf flowing through his veins, but I was stronger.

He screamed and jolted violently as the silver laced poison enter and flowed through his veins. I began to sing to him as he breathed his last couple of breaths. A lullaby that my mother used to sing to me. My voice calmed him and he leaned into my chest.

Twinkle twinkle star in the sky

Time to sing a Lullaby

Sing you a song of a toy balloon

Sailing all around the Moon

Twinkle twinkle cross the Milky Way

Where the stars come out to play

Sailing along with the moon light beans

A toy balloon in a land of dreams

Go to sleep and very soon

You'll be like that toy balloon

Deep in dreamland far beyond the sky

Twinkle twinkle twinkle hush-a-bye

Deep in dreamland far beyond the sky

Twinkle twinkle twinkle hush a bye

He was gone long before I finished the lullaby, but I finished it anyway. He needed something sweet and loving to cary him into death, not the wickedness that had put him here in the first place.

I eased his limp body off of mine and placed him gently on the floor. I pull the comforter from his bed and pulled it up over his head. Just as I was headed towards the door, it opened and the sheriff and the boy's father walked in. They were probably astounded that the boys wailing had subsided. They both look me in the eyes and my insides shredded at how hopeful they looked. I slowly shook my head and walked out the door.

I heard the cries of anguish from the mother as I walked out the front door. My father and brother looked at the state I was in and rushed to my side.

"What happened, love?"

My father gripped my elbow and made me turn to face him.

"A lycan. The boy was bitten by a lycan. He started to turn..."

My voice broke as I recalled cradling the innocent boy in my arms as he took his last breath.

"Did you take care of it?"

I could tell my brother didn't want to ask me that, but I knew he had to. He knew just as I did that even if a werewolf only lived a week or two after a bite, the amount of carnage that they left in their wake during that short reign was substantial. They could wipe out an entire town in that timeframe. They had to be put down before that happened.

"I took care of it."

I pulled away from my father's touch, shoved my medical bag in my storage compartment of my motorcycle and fired up the engine.

"Where are you going?"

My brother shouted over the roar of my engine.

"To kill that son of a bitch."
