The first chapter is the most important part of your book, it helps the reader decide if they want to read on or get off your book as fast as they can. If your first chapter sucks then the chances of people reading on, giving you more reads, is slim.

There are many ways to make your first chapter engrossing and interesting. Here are some ways to make sure people read on from that first chapter:

- start with action, make sure the reader is interested right from the start.

- no spelling mistakes or grammatical errors- the reader will be put off immediately

-introduce things briefly, don't spend ages explaining things as that will bore people. However don't be too vague

- don't make it too long or too short

- use your best writing, your best adjectives etc

What most writers find is that the first chapter of their book will have considerably more reads than the last chapter of the book because people base their opinions of a book on the first few chapters. Make sure that your first impression is a good one.
