《The Bride of Gojo Satoru》Chapter 43

22 weeks pregnant...
2 days have passed since I last held the big clan meeting, and we were back to regroup for their answers.
I breathed out tiredly as I cupped my large belly in my hands. My babies were growing inside of me each passing day and getting stronger by the hours. My power and Gojo's power were following in their blood. I really hope one looks like me. I want to look at my child and be like 'yeah s/he looks just like their mommy'. Although Naozumi is cute, he's more like his father than me. I miss Gojo so much that it comes to a point where Naozumi does act like him. He's basically Gojo's clone.
I sighed in the motel I stayed at in Hokkaido. I wasn't going to buy a plane ticket home and back if I could stay here for two days. I know damn well these higher ups weren't going to send assassins to kill me on sacred grounds.
Knock knock knock
"Come in,"
"Ena-sama, the meeting is about to begin soon." A Gojo servant entered my room, bowing before me as I'm their temporary leader. They know how to show respect without asking them to do it. At least they know who's their master.
"Excellent!" I clasped my hands together. "Why don't we go see them right now shall we?" I plastered a crooked smile.
So much awaits at this possibly last meeting if they choose to turn their back on me. They all should know that I'm trying really hard to convince them with the evidence I've shown them. Also, they should realize that if I wanted to destroy this world, I would've done it in a heartbeat. I wouldn't have gone through so much to get the head leaders assembled at Hokkaido. I'm trying to be positive and believe that they'll side with me. These leaders better not fail me.
"Ugh, my back aches, my feet aches... I'm always hungry and I have to pee every 10 minutes..." I grumbled to myself in the car ride to the secret hideout. I really wanted my babies out of me. I'm tired of being pregnant. There's just so many changes that are happening to my body, and I'm really wanting to buy a wheelchair at this point. My swollen feet were too tired to walk. It's a good thing that I have servants, kids, and other adults to do my work for me.
Arriving on time for the meeting, it was only just me and the three head clan leaders. I decided not to take Naozumi with me. I made him go home with Megumi and Yuta. He has seen enough after the first meeting. I want to spare him the daily life of a clan leader and let him be a child. I don't want to rob his innocence when it already has. I missed the days of being happy with Gojo. The household was always so lively and loud, but it's a bit lonely and empty now... At least we have people to fill in those big gaps of his missing presence.
Getting out of the car, I breathed the autumn air and it smelled like change. Something big was going to happen. I can bet my money that it's the clan leaders siding with me.
Wobbling to the traditional Japanese house, I slid open the rice panel door. "I'm here...!" Even though the walk wasn't long, it's tiring to carry three lives inside of me. I have to breathe more and stop in my tracks to rest, and the cycle continues.

"Ena, why don't you rest before we start?" The Inumaki leader kindly suggested, being more considerate than the other two men in this room.
Without saying anything, I nodded in response.
A few minutes later, we were discussing their final decision.
"So... What is it going to be?" I gazed at everyone, pulling out a rice cracker from my sleeve to munch on since I was a bit hungry. I gotta feed my babies one way or another.
Crunch crunch crunch
My chewing echoed in the air until Naobito Zenin cleared his throat.
"Ahem!" He fixed his eyes on me, seeing how dark it got. He means business if his aura changed from a single look. "Remember the man who you called the 'mole'?" Naobito exhaled sharply as if admitting to the claim will make me look like the good person in the matter and shatter his pride as clan leader. Watching him struggle saying the truth was pleasing to watch. He would scrunch up his nose and shift his eyes away and back at me, a repeating process that he's fighting with himself.
I leaned over the table and simply smiled at him. "We all make mistakes as leaders... You might as well own up to it and fix it before it's too late."
Naobito gritted his teeth then blurted out loud, "Yes, the man is a mole planted by the higher ups for many years..." He further explained that after torturing him, there were more to it than we expected. "The higher ups have their spies in all of our clans, so they have dirt on all of us."
My heart raced in anxiety. I know I shouldn't be too surprised but I am. Now it made sense why they knew about my family's fire. I don't even know if the Kita mole is still alive or not. Perhaps they might be dead because they don't want them to encounter me and I jump on their ass about my clan's death. Ooph, what a tough situation to be tangled in...
The Kamo leader hissed from this sneaky tactic. "I've been ratted out by my own men? How did this slip underneath my nose? Shit, there could be more than one mole in our clan." He was extremely frustrated and under pressure from the news. Who wouldn't be? We're in the higher ups' hands. It's not so easy to break away since they have more power than our clans do.
"To get rid of them, the easiest method is the simplest one... telling everyone different things about what happened in the meeting. Just keep track of what information you tell others." I suggested because confronting everyone won't make a difference. They might have members who are very manipulative and are able to look innocent while framing others. It's better to avoid that route.
Then Naobito continued as we discovered more information that the higher ups only kept in their tiny circle. "Gojo's sealment has been premeditated after Geto's death."
I felt chills running up my arms. My blood turned ice cold as I bit my lips, feeling the core of my spirit on the way to hell. "How? How is that possible?!" I banged my fist on the wooden table, not being able to contain my anger. This didn't make any sense at all. Why did it have to be after Geto's death? How could've it been different if it was before Geto's death? As my head was on the topic of Geto and his death, something clicked a clog in my clockwork brain. My eyes grew wide, realizing the true meaning of Geto's death and the preplanned sealment of Gojo—it all linked to the imposter Geto.

Again Naobito wasn't done. He had more to say to solidify my mental conclusion. "The higher ups knew about Geto Suguru's revival after last year's declaration of war. They kept it a secret amongst themselves. Apparently, from what I heard—"
"" I said in unison with Naobito.
"Huh?" Naobito and everyone else looked befuddled and a bit worried that I'm also a traitor.
I put my hands in front of them, assuring them that I'm not a threat or a traitor because I wouldn't be asking for their help if I was. "I kept some other information away from you all from the last meeting, but I will come clean once Naobito finishes his investigation."
They all were a bit bothered by my words yet we came so far and deep into this matter so it had to be finished.
"Continuing on... assuming it's not the real Geto but some type of con sorcerer man, they made a binding vow with 'Geto'. In order for the higher ups to keep the power in their hands, they must get rid of what keeps the balance in check—Gojo Satoru. In exchange for Gojo's removal by 'Geto's' doing, he will be able to do whatever he wants whether it's to wreak havoc or stay silent. But their end goal is to restart this world by bringing back the golden ages: the Heian Period."
"Oh my gosh..." I buried my face in my warm and clammy hands. This was literally too much to take in.
"For the Heian Period to come back, Ena has to die too."
The room was heavy as I didn't know I was mentally drowning in. For five years—five long years filled with joy, I still can't be happy or free. There will always be strings attached to me or Gojo. We're never safe, and it felt like our happiness was only temporarily. We have to sacrifice so much to live in peace for just one day. That's why we couldn't hold a wedding for ten years. Within those ten years, the higher ups or curse users were either targeting me or him, or dragging Gojo on a long mission. We couldn't catch a break and breathe. It's like fate didn't want us to be content in our marriage, family, or life as a whole. Gojo and I suffered from growing up, and it only carried on to our mid-twenties. It felt like a ball and chain strapped around our ankles. Although we were born powerful, we are cursed by the responsibility of the world on our shoulders.
I painfully scoffed as my feelings were muddled. I was hurt, sad, confused, hysterical, and so much more. All I wanted in life was to be free from this rotten world, but I guess to be free was to fight for it. To fight equaled sacrificing yourself in the cause.
"Why would they want to bring back the Heian Era?" One asked.
My fingers ran through my hair, breathing out heavily as I anchored my neck back. Once my fingers were at the ends of my hair, I dropped my head forward to look at the leaders. "Power and control. That's the era where sorcerers were thriving by the influence of the higher ups. If they were to recreate that, they will never lose power because the trust will be back to them, in hopes of a peaceful future."
"These crazy bastards..." Naobito mumbled, feeling so deceived. Throughout the whole existence of sorcerers, no one would ever suspect the executives to betray their own subjects for their greed of power.
"Going back to Geto, how do you know it's not him?" The Inumaki leader asked as it's been stuck in his head.
"Before I start, is everyone going against the higher ups?" I didn't want this information to be leaked out. Who knows what the higher ups were going to do if they heard about my son Choso. He's literally been such a sweetheart to me and Naozumi. He's always on top of his feet, tending our needs before we could even ask or say for it. It's like he's a mind reader. Also, Naozumi really loves Choso and calls him brother. I'm like mama duck and Choso and Gojo's students were my cute and lovable ducklings. They'll follow me wherever I go, and at this point, I grew used to it.
"Yes," the three men said, assuring me that we all had one goal: to get rid of the higher ups.
Clasping my hands, I didn't know where to begin but I managed to tell them about Choso—a cursed womb: death painting—who's now my adoptive son.
"Are you sure he has blood manipulation?" The Kamo leader asked the nth time. I understand why he's shocked about Choso being a Kamo member, but I don't need to drill it in his brain.
"YES, HE DOES. Are you really concerned about that more than the real identity of who's taking over Geto's body??"
"Regardless who it is, the higher ups must've known him. If they didn't then we wouldn't be in this situation." Naobito cleared the air as he said it in a matter-of-fact tone.
"Since we have that finished, I want you guys to deal with the higher ups while I deal with 'Geto'—"
The three men immediately refused my plan.
"NO!"
"You're not in any state to fight! You're pregnant!" The Inumaki leader said, clearly pointing out the obvious.
"We can handle 'Geto' and the higher ups," Naobito implied.
I shook my head. "No, I have to deal with him personally. He has been haunting my life since day one. I will finish him once and for all and bring back Satoru! I can guarantee that he's not going to seek you out but me. I'm his main target for this destruction; I'm the one everyone wants to kill..." My lips quivered as it still hurts to say it out loud. I quickly bit the bottom of my lips, hanging my head low. I held back my tears because I didn't want to look so weak in front of these emotionless men. I am scared to face off 'Geto'. I don't even know who's the real mastermind behind it, nor do I want to risk my triplet's lives; however, I know that nothing's going to change. Many sorcerers will die if I'm not involved. I don't want their deaths to be meaningless.
"Ena, it's okay to cry. I won't judge." The Inumaki leader softly spoke. "I know it's not easy to bear this much responsibility. It's truly not your fault that this has happened. We were all fooled in front of our eyes, but now we have a chance to change that!"
Tears gushed out as I sobbed quietly. I didn't want any of them to see my ugly state. It's already embarrassing to cry in front of these men.
At the end of this meeting, we concluded that the final fight will take place in four weeks at Shibuya. The clan leaders will pressure the higher ups while eliminating the mole for the time being. We'll come back in secret to explain what the plan of rescuing Gojo will be like. But I clearly reminded them that my job is to fight 'Geto', and no one else is going to interfere because it's my battle. The mastermind won't be alone as he will have his curses released, so sorcerers will be busy taking them down. After the war, it's the higher ups' turn to be chewed out as I'm back in my husband's arms.
"Hey babe," Gojo called out to Ena, who was engrossed reading her romance novel.
"Hmm?" Ena didn't rip her eyes off the page and words she was reading. However, she decided to close her book so Gojo wouldn't start nagging at her that she wasn't listening to him. "What is it?" She looked at him after putting the book aside.
Ena's full attention was back on to Gojo, her beloved yet annoying husband.
A curious smile lingered on his face which made Ena more scared than interested. "Out of Shoko, Mei, and Utahime, who would you date? Regardless of your sexuality. I just want to know if it's by looks, power—" Gojo scoffed at the fact that Utahime wasn't a grade 1 sorcerer but a semi-grade 1.
Hearing Gojo's pettiness leaking out, Ena shook her head, wondering why he's still making fun of her after all these years.
Gojo continued, "Personality, weight, wealth, or—"
Ena didn't want to listen to his long list because she already knew the answer right from the start. "Mei Mei. Hands down Mei Mei!" She said while clapping proudly.
Her answer shocked Gojo as he thought Ena would choose Shoko since they knew each other for a long time and even hung out once and a while compared to the other two girls. Ena rarely sees Utahime or Mei Mei unless they're in Tokyo for some business. But knowing that her answer was Mei Mei, this sparked poison to spread to his heart as his chest tightened. He felt jealous.
"Not only Mei Mei's hot with or without her braided hair blocking her face, she is tall! If I were into women, I would definitely date a tall woman. I gotta give my tall women some love~"
The more Ena enthusiastically talked about Mei Mei, the more Gojo felt jealous and couldn't contain himself to sit still. He was on the edge of exploding as his foot bounced off the ground to levitate his anxiousness. Gojo also made a mental note that if he wasn't a tall skyscraper, Ena wouldn't bat an eye at his direction considering she's taller than most girls in Japan.
Ena clapped loudly again as she stood up from her seat. "She also got lots of money too. I'll be her sugar baby if she wants to be my sugar mama. I know she likes me!!"
Gojo closed his eyes for a solid minute before reopening them. He didn't know whether he should stop and take her to bed or not because he had a gut feeling that she might ruin the mood by bringing Mei Mei up again.
Then Ena started to laugh from what she's about to tell Gojo. She knew whatever she was going to say was either going to break Gojo or keep him silent. "Mei Mei has a dominant nature which means she's not a sub but a dom... And you know I'm submissive! I love to be dominated!! So I will gladly let her ram me!! She can hit it any day, bro—!!"
Gojo snapped after getting the picture. He couldn't let Ena get close to Mei Mei anymore. He just couldn't. If Ena can talk dirty about what Mei Mei can do to her, he doesn't want to hear it. It's bad enough that his chest was squeezing like crazy and Ena wasn't trying to stop talking about it either. Gojo believed that Ena was testing him because her words became so careless and just cruel because she's his wife not Mei Mei's.
"Alright, I'm going to make sure you're not walking for days!" Gojo threw Ena over his shoulder and slapped her ass as she didn't make a noise, which really surprised Gojo as she usually does.
Hanging over Gojo's shoulder, Ena was displeased about this as she frowned. She wasn't done talking about Mei Mei and she didn't ask to be taken to bed. Ena wanted to finish explaining why she would choose Mei Mei over the other two. Wasn't that the reason why Gojo asked her in the first place? To get answers from her decision making.
"Honey, you're acting a bit off. You always make some type of noise whenever I slack your butt." Gojo pouted as he put Ena on the ground. His tall statue melted to the floor, wondering why Ena, his own wife, was acting so mean and different. Gojo rounded his eyes to resemble a very sad and pitiful puppy so Ena could comfort him.
However, he didn't expect to receive the wrong answer from her.
"Yeah, that's because you're not Mei Mei. I'm going to be sleeping in her bed tonight, not yours."
"BABE!"

A Standard Model of Magic
The world ended, and magic came back. The part our parents didn't expect, was for Science to break on reentry. Twenty years after the apocalypse, with our nations dismantled and hidden continents unearthed, a new generation has grown up in the wreckage of 21st century civilization. For us, the fantastic is at our doorstep and we have had no choice but to fight back. Meanwhile, the laws of nature bend and break at the whims of immortal gods, all of which are now dead and none of which are content to stay that way. But we cannot afford to give up. We are the stewards of a rewritten century, in which a little luck and a whole lot of magic might make anything possible – maybe even a world better than the one we lost. A Standard Model of Magic is a complete overhaul of my old story A Storm in the Fall. I'm afraid I was unhappy with the LitRPG elements, which I don't mind reading, but I apparently loath writing. Sorry. Once I'd made the choice to decouple the story from the OF that inspired it and reconfigure the magic system to my satisfaction, little of the original plotline survived. I will be salvaging most of my original characters, and I will keep some elements which are endemic to the genre, but that is all. I don't have an update schedule which I can commit to yet, but I will try to maintain a weekly pace.(This is currently RoyalRoad exclusive, since I'm lazy. If you find it posted elsewhere, it wasn't me and it wasn't with permission) If you're interested, I've set up a discord.
