《Iridescent (E. Cullen)》Chapter Three

It is very clear that Loki hasn't actually spent too much time on Midgard. They might have come and met Zenaida's father. They might have spent the majority, if not all, of their pregnancy on Midgard, but it is very clear that there have been very little, likely short, interactions with the world around them. Loki stands behind Zenaida as she peruses the shelves of a store in Oslo but Loki keeps getting distracted by things. Figurines. Candy. Toys. And right now, it's a smell that keeps tickling at their nose.

"What's that smell?" Loki inquires, turning to look around the store. Zenaida sniffs a little at the air and smiles. Coffee. Delicious. Midgardian coffee. Oh, she has missed that smell so much. She was too young for it when she left. But Charlie brewed a pot every morning for himself so she was used to the smell. It smells like home.

"Coffee" She answers as she looks over the items on the shelf. They decided that she would need to pick up a few things to make it look like she's been living in Norway for the last three years. "They'll be a stall here somewhere..." Loki hums a little and she turns her attention back to the shelf of little figurines. She can't decide which one looks more like something she would buy if she had been living here. She wants a photo frame so she can put in a photo of her and Loki in it. Not this version of Loki but a female formed one. Considering that they are supposed to be her mother. She just wants a good frame for it. She picks up two from the shelf and pulls a face. One is gold plated, the other a green-tinted metal frame. Both are rather fitting for Loki. "Hey, what do you...?" She draws off finding that Loki is no longer standing behind her. She huffs a little and takes both frames with her as she goes off in search of them.

Loki is easy enough to find, they stand out even in a busy shopping centre. They are leaning on the coffee store counter, eyes on the blackboard above them. The barista is talking to them, likely explaining what all the different terms mean. Loki seems to be so invested in actually exploring this time. Trying new things. Where was this energy on Asgard? Before Zenaida decided to leave. She holds up the two frames as Loki makes their way back towards her with a takeaway coffee cup in their hand.

"What did you get?" Zenaida asks, Loki glances back at the barista and then at their daughter.

"Something called a kokekaffe" They answers, Zenaida hums a little and then shakes the frames. "Gold...obviously," Loki tells her, taking the gold frame from her to look over it. Zenaida snorts, she should have guessed.

"It's not real gold" She argues and they pull a face of disappointment. Not what they were expecting.

"What now?" They ask as they head towards the cashier stand to pay for the frame. Zenaida looks down at the shopping bags in her hands and then at the ones on Loki's arm. They have enough. Enough to make it believable that she's been living in Norway.

"I think I am done" She offers with a shrug. Exhausted. Whilst she doesn't hate shopping, it is not up there with her favourite past times. It's a necessity that she can get behind when she needs to. And now, they already have a few shopping bags between them. Zenaida is thankful for magic, because she would never be able to afford this without the use of magic for some cash. Not an obscene amount, but enough to get her what she needs. And Loki doesn't exactly have earth money. Gold coins aren't really going to be any help here. No exchange in place for it. She feels terrible doing this little thing, using magic to create money, but what else can she do. There are things she needs to do, to buy, to replace. She hasn't really been back on earth in three years, other than a couple of days here and there to visit Charlie. She's older now. With older needs. More mature fashion needs.

Back at the hotel room that they booked, just for a few hours to get everything in place for her flight back, Zenaida packs up all of her new things. With her abilities, she doesn't need to buy clothing, as long as she's seen something, she can replicate it when she changes. She does prefer actual clothes though. It's always felt a little odd walking around with faux clothing on. She is naked when she does that. It's weird. So she buys clothes. Wears them. She has one bag. A small backpack, enchanted by Loki to hold more, that she packs her clothing into. The rest are being boxed up so Loki has an excuse to check in on her after she's arrived in Forks. They'll pose as a deliveryman and drop off the last of her things. They will have to have a proper and official goodbye at the airport. Loki taps something against her arm, stealing her attention from her packing. She turns to face them, find that they are holding out a small black jewellery case and Zenaida raises an eyebrow. Not sure when they went off to get that.

"It seems reasonable to assume that as your...mother, I would have given you something" Loki voices and motions for her to open the box. Zenaida lets out a breath and then lifts the lid to find a gold necklace with a heart and snake charm at the bottom, the snake wrapping around the heart, inside. She knows what they mean to say with this necklace. Just with her pin badge. This is a piece of Loki that will be with her. Their own way of showing she will be missed.

"It's beautiful" She whispers and then looks at Loki. "Thank you" Loki takes the necklace from the case and moves behind her.

"Here" Loki pulls it around her neck to clasp it at the back as Zenaida lifts her hair out of the way. There is a sort of knowing energy to the two of them. Time is almost up. Her flight is only a couple of hours away now, pretty soon they'll have to go to the airport. "Have you finished packing?" Loki asks.

"Almost" She answers as she glances around. There are only a few things left to be tucked away. Books that Frigga pushed her to take from Asgard. So she can continue her magical studies at home, but Zenaida doesn't think she will. Magic was fine on Asgard, there were bits and pieces of it everywhere, Loki and Frigga both practised. But on Midgard, on Earth, there is nothing like it. She came home to be human. To live her human life.

.......

The rumbling of the aeroplane engine is soft under Zenaida. She's starting to feel a little more lonely now that she's left Loki behind. It's a sort of limbo, between that part of her life and Charlie. She knows she made the right choice in going home, but the last few days with Loki have been different. She touches the charm hanging from her necklace and lets out a breath. Loki proved that when they put their mind to it, they can be a rather attentive parent. She just wishes that they had shown that side of themselves before she chose to leave. Maybe then things would be different. Maybe they will be different, next time. For now, though, she is going home.
