《Broken | completed》Chapter 23

"Mummy," Matthew called. I figured he was probably speaking in his sleep or something but when I looked up, he was looking directly at me.

"Are you calling me?"

"Can you be my mummy?" he asks, his voice quiet.

"You've got-"

"She dead though," he whispers. "Please?"

"I'll, uh, have to speak to Kaden," I tell him. I was a bit shocked. It's been a good few weeks now since his parents died but I didn't expect him to want w new mum and dad so soon. Mind you, he's only two and Kaden and I have been like parents to him. Matthew nodded his head and got off the bed, running out the room. He didn't look upset or anything, he looked happy actually. That's why I didn't run after him. I knew he would be fine. Besides, Kaden had people making sure he was okay. When I say that, I mean he had people kinda following him. But they were people Matthew knew and trusted so that he didn't find it suspicious, creepy or scary.

"Nova." I looked up to find Lucien in the room.

"Lucien? What are you doing here? Does Kaden know you're here?" I ask because I knew Kaden wouldn't be happy.

"Of course not," he laughed out. "I needed to speak to you."

"About what, exactly?" Possibly about mum?

"That kid," he says, looking around the room. "He's a special kid, isn't he? Very."

"He's just an-"

"No, I know what he can do. They were all supposedly, well, extinct. But no, there he is. Probably the last living one." What the hell is he on about? "I need to see him."

"He's just left the room, I don't know where he is." I know Lucien is suppose to be my half-brother and all, but something about him doesn't settle right with me. It's odd. He's odd. I don't get it, really. I certainly don't trust him with Matthew.

"I'll find him," he mutters and before he could disappear, which I found out he could do, I grab onto his arm to try and stop him. What do you know, I disappeared with him.

We appeared back at his mansion and I was shocked. "What the hell," I breathe out. Lucien looks down at me.

"You're an idiot," he tells me, "and Kaden will be furious. Well done."

"Can't you just do what you did again and I don't know, teleport me back?" He didn't seem amused but then cracked a smile.

"I could, or you could hang out here for a bit," he offers and I look around, thinking that maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea. At least it'll keep him occupied and won't want to find Matthew just yet. "What do brothers and sisters do, though?"

"I'm not sure, I wouldn't really know. We could, uh, read?" I really didn't know what to suggest, and reading was the first thing that came to my mind.

"Wow, yeah, reading does not sound like a fun activity."

"You don't like reading?" I gasp, completely shocked. How can you not like reading?

"Of course I do, but just not with others. I prefer to be on my own, reading on my own. I find reading sort of a personal activity, therefore it doesn't sound like a fun activity to do with you. No offence, though. I just prefer to be alone when reading."

"Well, we could..play some video games? Or play cards? Cards are always fun."

"Video games are for children and I do not own any cards," he tells me. Yikes, he seems no fun. Who doesn't own a deck of cards?

"Well what do you suggest we do then seeing as you have just shot down my ideas?"

"You know, I don't fancy being dinner to your mate. It doesn't seem very..fun." Nothing seems fun to you. "So, I'm taking you back. I've had word that he's already not very happy." Woah, I've only been gone for like five minutes. He takes my arm and does that whole disappearing act. Suddenly, I'm in my room and Kaden was pacing around the room with an annoyed look on his face. Matthew was also sitting on the bed staring at Kaden pacing around.

Kaden's head turns to us. "Where the hell did you take her? No, why did you take her?" he growls out. Lucien rolls his eyes, let's go of me and disappears. I noticed his lingering gaze on Matthew before he disappeared. I ran to Matthew and pulled him in for a hug.

"Make sure you stay with one of us at all times, okay?" I tell him and he nods his head. I'm then pulled away from Matthew and embraced in a hug by Kaden who was now sitting on the bed too.

"You went to him first, why?"

"Lucien wants him for some reason. We can't let him out of our sight."

"I thought you trusted him?" Kaden asks and I shake my head.

"Not anymore. There's something not right about him. Plus, he's honestly no fun! Who doesn't like video games? He doesn't even own a deck of cards!" Kaden laughs at me and kisses my forehead.

"What do you think he wants with Matthew?" he asks, suddenly turning serious.

"Said something about 'them' being extinct and how he's the last living one? Kaden, what exactly is Matthew?" He pulls me closer and whispers in my ear.

"Adopted. They're not his real parents." I pull back and gasp, then look at Matthew who was playing with his feet. He notices my gaze on him and looks up and gives me a toothy grin.

"Mummy!" he exclaims out of the blue and crawls towards me to throw his arms around me. Kaden furrows his eyebrows at Matthew calling me mummy. In all honesty, I didn't know how to reply. He looks to Kaden. "Daddy!" he exclaims and crawls towards Kaden. Kaden was taken aback. He hugged him back though.

"Matthew-"

"Let him be," I tell Kaden.

"We should adopt him, you know. He's like our own. We've taken care of him for a while now, and he really is like our own. I mean, I kind of don't think I'd be comfortable with anyone else adopting him.." My smile widens at Kaden. He's really attached to Matthew.

"We'll probably have to do it all legally, right?"

"Of course. How about that, buddy? You want us to adopt you?" I mean, who knows if he knows what adopt means.

"Daddy and mummy?" he asks and Kaden nods his head. Matthew breaks out the hugest smile.

"Now, what did I tell you earlier?" I ask him, just wanting to make sure he had listened to me.

"Stay with you!" I ruffle his hair and kiss his forehead.

"I think we've now just got to find out what Lucien is up to," Kaden tells me. "And you could be the one to do that," he says, looking as if he was regretting what he was saying.

"What?"

"I don't want to do this, but maybe you ought to be an insider? Find out everything from him? I mean, I really don't know why I am suggesting this but it could be our only way. I know he's your half-brother but we've got to take him down. We can't let him harm Matthew, okay?"

"Well, how are we going to get him here?"

"Don't worry, I'll sort that out. But you've got to be the one, he mustn't know that I'm involved. I've got to make sure him and I are still enemies."

"What happened between you guys anyway?"

"That's a story for another day, love." He kisses my forehead again and gets up, leaving Matthew and I in the room.

"Stay away from that scary vampire, okay?"

"Okay, mummy!"

"Now, shall we go get some food?"

"Yay, food!"
