《Kidnapped (Book 1)》Finding a Kidnapper

Matt was looking at a map, trying to find places where the kidnapper could be hidden. There were so many places that someone could hide a bunch of girls. Matt was desperate to have his baby girl back in his arms. He would do anything for her. He was circling potential places when Ross walked in.

"Whatcha doing?" He asked, staring at the map.

"I'm trying to find places up north where our guy could be hiding the girls at. Marcus was heading north when he left the prison so I think that is our best place to look. Maybe the note he got told him to go north." Matt said, trying to put all the puzzle pieces together.

"You found anything worth searching?" Ross questioned.

"Maybe a couple places around here." Matt said and Ross smiled at the news.

He had circled three main places where they could be. There was a group of several abandoned homes about ten miles north of the station. Then there were two sections of woods that each had several cabins in them, which were farther from town, about twenty and thirty miles away. Matt was going to investigate all of them even if it took days to do. He was not giving up on his daughter.

Ross offered to join Matt but he declined his offer. Matt didn't want to distract him from working on the other crime scenes associated with the kidnappings. If Matt found something, he would call for back up. Right now, these places were just guesses.

He said goodbye to Ross and got in his car to head to the abandoned homes. This guy can't be too far because he has been watching the police and his victims. It took Matt about ten minutes to get to the houses. They were abandoned because people found that there were under a cemetery and didn't want to live there. After a while, the houses got old and people weren't allowed to live in them even if they wanted to. It would be the perfect place to hide girls who aren't supposed to be found.

He got to the group of three houses in a row. There were only three in the facility because once construction workers realized they were building on a cemetery, the stopped construction. Matt got out of his car, made sure his gun was loaded and walked up to the first house. It was a small ranch house that had the decay look to it. It had chipped paint and the bushes around the house had taken over the front porch and were overgrown. He climbed the three stairs to get to the door. Each time the stairs creaked as he stepped on them. The door was unlocked and he walked in. It was day time so he didn't need his flashlight in the powerless house.

There wasn't any way he could live here, no power and poor conditions. Matt still wanted to check out the house though. It would make him feel better. Other than the bugs and rats, there was nothing else living in the house. Disappointed, he walked over to the next house. It was a two story house that was in a worse condition than the first house. There were bugs and rodents at the house too and Matt found nothing else living inside.

He had a feeling that the man wasn't here. He decided to check the last house though, just to be safe. He was right about this theory, he wasn't there and it was just an old house. The sun was setting and was going to get dark soon so Matt decided to head back to the police station and check out the woods tomorrow. He drove back to the station as he kept thinking of Kelly and how much he missed her. When he got there, he wanted to look at the report that Kyle was supposed to write up about the Christina Perry case.

Matt started to read the report that was left on his desk. As he read the messy handwriting, something clicked in his mind. He quickly got the case file for Faith Hanks and Courtney Finder. He quickly grabbed the notes written by the man. He compared the writing to the writing on Kyle's file and was stunned by the results.

"Ross!" Matt yelled as loud as he could.

Ross slowly walked to his desk where Matt was panicking. It wasn't possible. Not Kyle. Matt was getting mad for Ross' lack of interest and quickness. This was impossible, it couldn't be true. Not Matt's closest friend.

"What?" He asked.

"I've found the kidnapper." Matt said.

Ross' eyes widen and he said, "What are you talking about?"

Ross leaned over Matt and saw the report and note compared together. The handwriting was the same rushed, scribbled handwriting.

"Who wrote this?" Ross asked in fear.

"Kyle." Matt answered, his heart full of betrayal from his friend.

"You've got to be kidding me. The man worked for me for over a year now and I hadn't suspected anything." Ross said frowning.

"We can discuss this on the car ride to his house. Get backup ready. We're going to get this guy."

The men ran to Ross' car while shouting for backup. Inside the car, Ross grabbed the walkie t walkie from the car and said, "All units to Kyle Olive's house. He's our kidnapper."

"I can't believe this. He was my friend, my best friend. How could he do this to us?" Matt whispered, still in shock.

"Matt, this is how murders and kidnappers minds work. They betray people who think they know them. He's crazy and we're going to get him and your daughter back." He said.

"Ross, he taught Kelly self-defense. He knows all her moves so self-defense is useless for her." He said, tears filling his eyes.

He still couldn't get the thought of Kyle hurting his daughter out of his mind. Kyle was like family to him and Kelly. She probably didn't know her kidnapper was him because he wore a disguise. Matt was so furious about the situation and just prayed that they would get him in time. They reached his house and Matt wondered if his daughter was there. All the lights were off and the house was silent. Kyle probably wasn't home but they had to check. Matt had a feeling that this was going to be a long night. Matt still had one lingering question on his mind: how could Kyle do this?

Matt was right about Kyle not being home so he decided to get a search party together to investigate the first set of woods. Matt was going to wait until morning but he that wasn't an option. Matt was trying to stay professional but all he could think about was his daughter. It was dark out so all the men were using flashlights. After about four miles or so of searching the darkened woods, a cabin came into view. The cabin would be a perfect place to hide since it's in the middle of the woods.

No one came out here and it was about four miles away from the entrance of the woods. Kyle really knew what he was doing which worried Matt. How long had Kyle been planning this? They approached the cabin and four men when to the back while Ross and Matt went to the front. Everyone had their guns out and were ready to catch Kyle. Ross opened the front door and they slowly walked in, guns up. They began to search the place, tearing up the place. It was just Ross and Matt inside, everyone else stayed outside just in case.

The cabin was small and only had a living area, one bedroom, a kitchen and a bathroom. Kyle was nowhere to be seen. Matt opened a door and saw a set of stairs. He whispered, "Ross, there's a basement."

He nodded at Matt and they quietly went down the old stairs. Matt turned on the basement lights and searched down there. Nothing, he wasn't there. Something wasn't clicking, this had to be the place. How could the girls not be here? There was still electricity working so someone had to be here.

"This isn't it." Ross said, frowning.

"No, this doesn't make sense. This has to be the place." Matt demanded, not believing that the girls weren't here.

Then he looked down and saw skid marks on the floor in front of the bookshelf. Matt examined the marks and knew that it had to be a door that always rubbed against the floor. Matt's heart started to race, this must be where his daughter is being held.

"This is a door, see the skid marks?" Matt asked pointing to the marks.

"That could be from anything though." Ross protested. Matt looked closer at the bookshelf and on the side of it was the smallest key slot.

"There's a small key slot here. They are in there; we need to get this door open." Matt said showing Ross the key slot.

"Attention, we may have found the girls we need help in the basement to get a door open." Ross said into a walkie talkie.

Seconds later, several men came running down to help. Someone had found a screw driver so Matt tried to use it to open the door but failed. Everyone pulled on the door but it wouldn't budge. Matt helped search for things to use to break the door. He found a hammer and started to beat the lock with the hammer. Matt started to take all his anger out on the door. Losing his daughter gave him great strength to do what he had to in order to see his daughter again. After beating several times, the lock fell off and the door opened. Everyone looked at each other and raised their guns as Matt walked in.

His heart started to pound as he walked through the door. The thought of saving his daughter helped him through the fear. Inside the room, there were seven different doors. The room was dimly lit as everyone entered. Matt opened the closest door to him, revealing the bathroom. What was more surprising was that Ethan was laying on the floor tied up and duct tape over his mouth. He glanced up at the men, relief filling his eyes.

"Guys, here's one." Matt called to his men.

Two men rushed in to help the boy. Ross and Matt began to open doors. The first door he opened was empty so he opened the next door. He walked in where a girl laid on a bed. She didn't look up at first and Matt knew she must have been expecting Kyle. He couldn't imagine how terrified these girls must be.

"Colorado Police." Matt said. The girls quickly turned her head to him. Her eyes lit up and she got to her feet.

"What's your name?" Matt asked.

"Christina Perry." She said in tears.

The little girl ran over to Matt and hugged him. He hugged her back and took her out of the room, not wanting her to stay in that prison any longer. Matt wished it was Kelly he was hugging at this point. Matt walked Christina over to another police officer, reassuring her that she was safe now. He walked into the next room where another girl was laying on her bed.

"This is the police. What's your name?" Matt asked.

"Anna Murphy." She whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks.

After Ross and Matt emptied all the girls out of the rooms, they had them sit on the couch while we wrote down all their names.

"Okay Ross, so we have Jessica Powers, Christina Perry, Anna Murphy, and Maddie Allen." Matt said.

"We're missing two." Ross said.

Matt was heartbroken that his daughter was gone. Where was she and was she doing okay? He knew Kelly was strong, but this was different. Matt felt tears rising in his eyes but he pushed them away. When he found Kyle he was going to kill him. Matt needed to be strong for not only his daughter but the rest of the girls. God knows what Kyle did to them down here.

"Girls, do you know who else is gone?" Ross asked.

"Uh, there was a girl named Brooke and Kelly." Jessica said.

"It's probably Brooklyn Williams then." Matt said to Ross.

"Attention, all units and detective, we have found the girls and need everyone out to a cabin four miles away from the woods that is about twenty miles from the station." Ross called through his walkie talkie.

All the girls and Ethan were taken upstairs to wait for more police to get there. No one appeared injured but it was too soon to tell. Matt would need to interview each of the girls to find out what really happened to them. Ross, Matt and some other officers stayed down in the basement. They started to inspect the area, looking for any clues to where Kyle went. That's when Matt's eyes landed on the air duct.

"Ross, don't you think this air vent is a little large, especially since this place was man made. I could fit in it." Matt said.

"A nice way to escape don't you think?" Ross asked and Matt nodded.

Matt opened up the vent and crawled inside. He wasn't sure what he would find but as he crawled further, he found a secret passage. It was so large he could stand up in it. This was the perfect escape route. Kyle had to have escaped this way before the police even showed up.

"Ross, come here!" Matt shouted.

He could hear the thumping of Ross crawling to him. He was as shocked as Matt when he could stand up in the duct. The two men continued to walk until a ladder leading to the surface came into view. They both climbed the ladder and Ross cursed under his breath.

"That son of a bitch. He escaped. He could be anywhere by now. While we were searching his house and the cabin, he was escaping." Ross said.

"Look around, is there a sign of a car or footprints or something?" Matt asked.

The looked and Matt found several pairs of footprints leaving to two large trees. Then Matt shined his flashlight to see tire tracks that were on a gravel path. The men looked at them and Matt said, "We've lost them."

"I'll get tracker dogs out here with Kyle's smell to try and track him." Ross said.

Matt felt tears fill in his eyes because he knew they had lost track of his daughter. Once he found Kyle, he would make him pay for hurting him and Kelly. Matt would make sure that Kyle knew he crossed the wrong family. Matt would do anything in his power to find Kelly, even if it killed him.
