《Kidnapped (Book 1)》Kidnap

At seven o'clock, my mom still wasn't home and we were getting hungry. I went to close my curtains when I saw something nerve shaking. My heart sank and my hands started to tremble. I stared out my window, almost unable to speak. I crinkled my eyebrows as I stared outside.
"What's wrong?" Ethan asked.
"Why do you think there is a black Mustang in my driveway?" I asked staring at the car.
Then the power went out and it was pitch dark. I even thought I heard footsteps, but that could have been my mind playing with me. I knew it wasn't my mom or dad or they would have called out. I didn't know of anyone with that car, so it wasn't anyone I knew. I felt my hands begin to shake and my heart started to race. My eyes adjusted to the darkness, but that didn't help calm my nerves.
"He's here." I whispered, tears filling in my eyes.
"Anyone have their cell phone? Mine is dead." Ethan asked.
"Mine is downstairs by Kelly's." Maddie said.
"We have to hide." I said, trying to remain calm.
There weren't many places to hide in my room though. My bed and closet were the only places. I knew those were cliche hiding spots but where else were we supposed to hide? I knew going downstairs was a mistake because the kidnapper was most likely down there. My palm started to sweat and tears lingered in my eyes. I didn't want to die. I wanted my dad to come home early and save us.
I tried pinching myself, praying this was all a dream, but sadly, this was far from a dream. We all squeezed under my queen sized bed as footsteps echoed throughout the house. My breathing picked up in pace and looking at Maddie and Ethan, they were just as terrified. I didn't want to believe this was really happening. No one thinks they would be abducted. Why did he want me? I wanted to cry but didn't want to be heard by the intruder.
I tried to think positive like maybe it was my neighbor or someone from my dad's work coming to check on me. Please let it be someone I know. If that was the case, why wouldn't they call out for me and why would the power be off? The footsteps stopped and my bedroom door opened slowly. The intruder wore black boots and had black pants on. I couldn't see that well because of the dark but I was pretty sure he was wearing dark shoes and pants.
He had a flashlight with him and was shining it throughout the room. I glanced over at Ethan who was next to me and Maddie who was next to Ethan. I could see the fear in their eyes, but that's about all I could see. I felt Ethan's hand grab onto mine, giving it a tight, reassuring squeeze.

The man walked over to my desk where I had several pictures of me and Maddie and then pictures of my family. He picked one up of Maddie and I that was taken a year ago, it was of us at our eighth grade graduation which we dressed formally for. He looked at it and I swear I saw a smile on his face. He looked around the rest of my room, even in my closet. He didn't check under my bed though which sickened me. Why did he look at my picture like that? He hadn't bothered checking the rest of the room before he left.
"Guys, we need to get outside." I whispered, making sure the man couldn't hear me.
They nodded and we slid out from under the bed. I tried so hard not to make the creaking sound when I walked on the floor. I glanced out into the hall way and saw his flashlight in my parent's room. I nodded at my friends, not knowing if they saw. We walked out into the hallway and down the stairs, my heart racing the entire time. What if he heard us and saw us trying to leave? I wanted to go back and hide somewhere but our best option was to get out of the house. Once we were downstairs, we quietly ran to the front door. I went to turn the handle but when I did, I was shocked.
"Ow." I yelped, probably too loudly but I couldn't help it. I shook my hand rapidly, tears forming in my eyes. My hand was throbbing now, almost burning my hand. The footsteps upstairs stopped when I screamed. I held my breath, knowing it wouldn't help but it was involuntary. Then the footsteps started again, coming closer to us. He was coming down stairs.
"The door shocked me." I whispered, trying to move my hand so it wouldn't stiffen up.
I saw his flashlight coming towards the stairs so we couldn't go passed the stairs or we would be seen. The only place was the basement. I really hated to go down but it was the only place without being seen. He was downstairs just as we got down to the basement. There wasn't even the moonlight to guide our way now. I felt my way down the wall and wanted to get as far from the stairs as I could just in case he followed us. The basement was probably the worst place to go at this point. In every horror movie, this is where someone is killed. What people don't know is that with little options and your adrenaline rushing through your body, you do what must be done. We had no other options but this.

Down in the basement, there was my dad's workout place and then there was a living area. We were in the living area and we slid behind the couch just as the basement lights came on. I was blinded for a moment and hoped that my mom or dad was home since the power was back on. Maybe the intruder left and my parents had scared them away. Ethan was holding tightly onto my hand, trying to comfort me. Maddie was on the other side of him, holding onto his arm tightly. She was scared out of her mind. Tears were running down her cheeks, but she didn't make a sound.
When I didn't hear anyone coming, I got nervous. If it was really my parents or the police they would have been shouting for me. It wouldn't be dead silent throughout the house. The intruder had to still be in the house. The basement door opened and someone came down the stairs. With each step, I found myself holding my breath, afraid to make any type of noise. If there was only one person, the three of us could take him, right? Unless he had a gun, which he probably did. No one breaks into a house without a weapon.
His footsteps walked into the living room where we were hiding. I had been peeking around the corner of the couch, looking to see who was coming but when I realized it was him and he was walking into the room, I ducked back behind the house. I had stopped breathing for a moment and then remembered that I needed to breathe. I felt him sit down on the couch that we were hiding behind like this was his house. He was wearing a black jacket and had blonde hair. I heard a faint laugh and closed my eyes. Did he know we were behind him? Why was he laughing? Then he stood up and in the blink of an eye, I felt myself being pulled out from behind the couch by my hair. I let out a scream as I opened my eyes to see the man standing above me.
He was wearing a white shirt under his black jacket and was wearing rubber latex gloves. He had brown eyes and had flat board abs that his white shirt made stick out. Overall, he was very muscular and well built. How were we supposed to fight him off? Maddie and Ethan had come out from the couch as the man stood over me. Panic was written all over their faces as the man cautiously stood over me, smirking.
I tried to kick at his leg but he jumped back. I attempted to back away to get to my feet to fight. I'd have a better chance if I could get to my feet. When I tried to back away, he grabbed my ankle and yanked me towards him. I started to kick my legs rapidly, trying to get free and injure him at the same time. To get better control of me, he leaned down and got lower to the ground. I threw a punch towards his throat, but he backed away just before I could hit him.
"Bad idea Kelly." He said coldly.
His voice was so calm. How did he know my name? I tried to get to my feet once again but he kicked me down. I went for another kick but he grabbed my leg, got down on both of his knees and held my leg in a position where he could break it. I had taken self-defense, I shouldn't have made a mistake like that. Adrenaline was supposed to help you fight, I thought, yet it made me make stupid mistakes. My mind was fuzzy, I couldn't focus on anything at this point. All I cared about was escaping, which seemed impossible.
"Should I break it? It would surely prevent you from fighting me." He asked.
I looked at him with fear. If he broke it, then I would never be able to fight or escape. I tried to squirm out of his grasp but failed. My heart was beating a mile a minute. My eyes burned with tears but I refused to cry in front of him. I wanted to scream for help but no one would hear me. My leg started to sting as he applied more pressure to it.
"Please don't." I begged, tears forming in my eyes from the increasing pain from my leg.
Ethan stepped forward but the man said, "Take another step and she gets it."
Listening to the intruder, Ethan stayed where he was. The man pulled something out of his pocket. It was a black cloth. He leaned over, still holding my leg and held it to my face. I kicked and wiggled around but he held me down with ease. He was probably using chloroform on me, so I would be knocked out. I tried not to breathe because I knew it was a chemical but I couldn't hold my breath that long. I felt the world spin around me and I was fading in and out of consciousness. The last thing I saw before going under was Ethan and Maddie's terrified faces.

Nero Zero
Monsters plagued the lands for too long. No matter if one had fangs, beak, teeth, skin, fur, or feather, or was tall, stout, or diminutive, the people suffered. Until the Gadgeteers came with a device that could allow people to fight back. Powered by one's own magical power, feeding off of monster Essence, the Arbitrium bracer turned the tables. It also changed society. Strength of one's level cap was all that mattered. The strongest were Kings and Emperors. The weak or those too poor to afford the marvelous device, destitute. And so it has been for millennia. All that mattered was one's level cap. High, low, a fate decided the moment the strange contraption came alive. Too high and you were a threat to those interested in keeping the status quo, a weed to be nipped before it could grow and take root. Too low and you were nobody, fated to be a bit more than a simple farmer. What if someone, somewhere, came up with a zero for their level cap? Unable to use Essence, unable to level up. On all of recorded history, it never happened. Until it did. In a small village of fur-less and tail-less ape-beastkin, a boy found out he was uniquely handicapped. Nero's level cap was Zero. But he'd never let that stop him from reaching his goals. ------------------------------------------------ All stories have already been told. We merely reuse elements from them. From Joseph Campbell's Monomith to Stephen King's advice, and that encyclopedia of tropes you've visited, fiction has been dissected and reassembled countless times. One will surely find elements inspired on other works here. Just like cooking from basic ingredients, the recipe and presentation is what really matter. This is a fantasy adventure, of someone that goes from a zero to a slightly bigger zero. It will have romance but no harem. Cruelty but with hope dimly shining ahead. Lightweight where it can be, heavy where it must. Thanks for reading. Cover Credits (The cover is CC-BY-NC-SA): Steampunk Spider Bracer, by Daniel Proulx.
