《Kidnapped (Book 1)》Faith Hanks

Matt Hunter got a call about a body found of a little girl. His boss, Brett Ross, had called and needed him urgently. He believed that this killing was from the kidnapper. Matt got dressed in his uniform as quickly as he could. He was still terrified for Kelly, knowing this creep could be following her. It took everything he had not to lock her in the house with ten officers guarding the house, but he knew that she would never allow that. She was too stubborn. He knew she would be okay at school, or at least he hoped. Once he was fully equipped with his gun, taser, handcuffs and a small notebook, he got into his police charger and raced down to the Colorado Police station.

Once he got there, there everyone was outside blocked by yellow crime scene tape. Officers were keeping people away from the scene, not wanting to contaminate the scene. Matt didn't know what to expect, Ross had only given him limited details over the phone. How does a killer place a dead body in front of a police station without getting caught? The man has some balls, that's all Matt had to say about him. The kidnapper was risky and it was hard to guess their next move. Matt got out of his car and walked over to the scene.

"Thank god Matt, you're here." His boss said.

"Have you been waiting on me? What's the situation?" Matt asked.

"Come and look." He said, leading the way.

Once they walked through the crowd of people outside the crime scene, he saw the body. The girl looked pretty young, maybe eleven or twelve years old. She had bright, red hair that was in a messed up braid. There was a bullet hole in the center of her forehead and her skin was pale white, stained with blood. The sight made Matt sick, because he thought about Kelly. What if this was her?

"We didn't want to touch her until you got her because you're the detective on the case." Ross said.

Matt ducked under the crime scene and walked up to the body to get a closer look. He slipped on a pair of latex gloves, not wanting to contaminate the crime scene. He turned his head, not wanting to look at her anymore at the scene before him. The poor girl was murdered cold blood, left out for display. The girl had her whole life ahead of her and now she was dead. He didn't want to have to tell the parents of this child that she is dead. That's the worst news a parent could ever hear.

"Do we know who is she?" Matt asked.

"It's Hanks' daughter." He said.

Matt was stunned. Officer Hanks was an amazing police officer who had been with the force for many years. Matt had known that her daughter had been taken but didn't put the clues together. Now looking at the girl, she looked just like her mother. Matt remembered how devastated Hanks was when she discovered her daughter missing.

"Hank found her own daughter this morning outside the station." He said frowning.

"This is our guy. It has to be." Matt said.

He examined the body and a piece of paper fell out from her shirt. His eyes widened as he stared at the note. The kidnapper actually left a note. Maybe this could lead to finding the rest of the girls. Matt's heart started to race; this was the first clue the police had gotten.

"I'm finished, for now, the coroner can take the body now." He said, then turned to Ross and said, "I found a letter in her shirt."

Matt watched as the coroner started to examine the body and get it ready for transpiration to the morgue. Ross and Matt walked away from the scene and just as Matt was about to read the letter out loud, Officer Hanks approached the men in a hurry. Her eyes were bloodshot and her eyes were puffy and red. Hanks had always been a powerful police officer, never allowing emotions to take over in the line of duty. Matt could see the heartbroken woman, terrified and hysterical, which he never thought he would see.

"I need to hear the letter. What did that bastard say?" She yelled, tears streaming down her cheeks.

"Hanks, you need to go home with your husband. You shouldn't be here, especially right now. Everyone understands what you're going through." Ross said, trying to comfort the woman.

"So you've lost a child? You've found your baby girl dead in the street, a bullet wound in her head? You can't possibly understand what I'm going through. Now read the damn letter. I'm not leaving until you do." She snapped.

Matt gave Ross a wary look, wondering if he should read the letter out loud to the mourning mother or not. Ross nodded, knowing that Hanks wouldn't leave until she heard what the letter said about her daughter. If it was Matt in the situation, he would do the exact same thing.

"Dear Colorado Police. This is Faith Hanks. I'm sure you know her mother. Well I hate her. I'm not going to tell you why. That's your job to figure out. Faith is obviously dead and I wanted to give you all some type of clue because you all are idiots because you can't find anything about me. Actually, that just makes me a genius and you all idiots but what does it matter. All of the girls I have taken, well most at least, are with me for a reason. Mrs. Hanks, this is payback, bitch. Here's your little girl back." Matt was shaking now.

This monster was a lunatic, no worse than a lunatic. Matt wrapped his arms around Hanks, knowing how devastated she must be to lose her only child. She sobbed into Matt's shoulder, making his uniform wet with tears, but he didn't mind. Hank's husband had arrived to take her home, as he tried to put on a brave face for his wife. Matt could tell that the husband was just as broken as Hanks. Matt watched as the couple left, leaving Ross and Matt alone.

Matt didn't understand the letter. Why would he hate Hanks? He was probably a criminal and she put him in jail or something. To kill someone's daughter because they were arrested seemed extreme, yet some people are mentally disturbed. The kidnapper admitted to having more girls, but where would they possibly be? The letter didn't give any indication of where the girls could be held.

"Are there any security cameras anywhere?" Matt asked.

"No, they have been broken for about a month. We never had the money to fix them." Ross answered.

"Are you kidding me? How does a police station not have security cameras that are working?" Matt yelled.

Despite Matt's frustration, Ross and Matt spent the next several hours examining the crime scene, making sure they didn't miss anything. Maybe there would be a footprint, hair follicle, or a fingerprint. Matt knew it was unlikely because this killer was organized, he didn't make mistakes that could risk him getting caught. All Matt needed was one simple clue to where this guy was at or who he was. After hours of searching, the men found nothing. The killer was completely untraceable. This killer was able to dump a dead body out in the middle of the road, and still not get caught. Defeated, Matt was sitting at his desk when Ross came over.

"We just got a call about a silver dodge charger was left at a rest stop and was set on fire. Someone also reported their car stolen at the same rest stop about twenty minutes away. Isn't that the type of car Kelly told you about?" Ross said going to his car.

Matt followed and said, "Yes. When did this happen?"

"Last night, early morning." He said starting his car. Matt got in the passenger seat.

"Why are we just being notified?" He exclaimed.

"The police there didn't know it involved our case." Ross said. He turned on his sirens and he drove at fast speeds to the rest stop. This could be the lead Matt was looking for.

Matt remembered Kelly telling him before he got the call about Faith about the car that was following her. This had to be the kidnapper. He must have ditched the car when he realized Kelly saw the vehicle he was driving. When Ross and Matt pulled up to the scene, there was already another crime scene investigator examining the area. There was a silver car parked farthest away from the rest stop, surrounded by yellow crime scene tape.

The men got out of the car and approached the scene. Matt could tell that the fire was recent due to the smoke lingering in the air. He could practically taste the burning metal in his mouth. The car was covered in soot and black markings from the fire. There were parts of the car that were melted off and only little of the original silver color remained in the car.

"Hello gentlemen, I'm Officer Gill." A tall, balding man in his forties greeted as Matt and Ross arrived at the scene.

"I'm Officer Hunter and this is Officer Ross. How long ago was the fire?" Matt asked.

"It was about six in the morning. A black Mustang was taken and let's just say the owner is furious. I guess he spent most of his money on that car." Officer Gill said, holding back a grin.

Matt looked over at a man dressed in an expensive black and white tux, yelling at the police officer who was taking his statement. The man was threatening to sue the police if they didn't find his car. Matt shook his head at the man. "He was a rich, spoiled asshole for sure. He was lucky that he wasn't killed or injured." Matt thought to himself.

"Is there any DNA?" Ross asked. "We found a type of glue, most like prosthetics, but we will have it tested. We also found a strain of hair, which is being sent to the lab as well. Other than that, nothing else." Officer Gill stated. "How long until we know about the glue and hair?" Matt asked.

"Within an hour or two." Officer Gill replied.

With that being said, Matt and Ross put on some gloves and started to double check the crime scene, knowing they couldn't miss anything. After an hour of being on scene, Matt got a phone call. He pulled out his phone, not bother to look at the caller ID. "Officer Hunter speaking." He said, not knowing if the station was calling him.

"Hey, Dad." Kelly said.

Matt couldn't help but smile when he heard her voice. It reassured him that she was fine. He hated when he was at work all day and have to leave her alone, especially during a time with this monster out and roaming the streets. He knew she was sixteen years old and took self-defense classes, but what if that wasn't enough. Kelly was smart, she could think quick on her feet. This still didn't stop Matt from worrying about her.

"Aren't you in school?" He asked.

"Yeah, I'm in gym but my teacher told me I could call you and see if I can stay after for track practice today." "How long?" Matt asked, not wanting Kelly out late.

"Until four and I have a ride home. Ethan's mom can take me home and Maddie will be with me. That is if she could spend the night tonight." She said and by the tone of her voice, he could tell she was smiling, hoping he would say yes. He honestly didn't care, he thought of Maddie as another daughter. It would be better for Kelly to have a friend with her.

"That's fine, Maddie can spend the night but not that boy." He joked.

"Well, duh." She said laughing.

"We may have a lead on the case, so come straight home and I'll be home late tonight. I'll text your mom to make sure she's home though." He said.

"Okay, I'll see you later." She said.

"Love you, Sweetie." He said.

"Love you. Bye." She exclaimed.

"Bye." He said hanging up the phone.

After ending the call with Kelly, Matt got back to work. Another hour passed and they had found nothing else. The kidnapper didn't leave any trace of evidence for them. Officer Gill approached the men once again, letting them know the results came back.

"The glue is a prosthetic adhesive. It's called spirit gum to be specific. It's used for applying artificial skin and other facial features. As for the hair, it is fake as well. The hair is from a blonde wig, cheaply made by the looks of it." Officer Gill said, handing Matt the results for him to read them as well.

"Our guy was in disguise, a complex one by looks of it." Ross said.

Matt frowned, knowing that even if a witness came forward saying they saw the man, it wouldn't help since he was in a disguise. At this point, trying to find the kidnapper is like looking for a needle in a haystack. This case just got a thousand times more complicated. Matt rubbed his forehead, knowing it was going to be a long day.
