《A beautiful mistake》68

In every action movie, there was always this guy who would say something dumb like 'expect the unexpected '. The dumb thing about it was that once he bravely let those three words out his mouth, there was no manual that came along with it. No list of instructions on how to confront the unexpected or how to react to the unexpected or what the unexpected really was to begin with.

Kind of like how her life was at the moment. A whole bucket load of unexpected shit hit her whack in the face and there was no way to confront it, no way to tackle it because in the first place nothing made sense. It was like being hit in the head and waking up in a totally new world, where no one made sense, nothing made sense and the environment didn't make sense either.

The more she stared at her shaky palms the more she felt like going crazy, her mind drowning in a whirlpool of questions. Who was she? It was like starting from square one again. Like the exact moment the doctor asked if she remembered who she was back then in the hospital eight years ago.

The only difference this time was atleast she had answers; that she was Mikaella, a mother to a teenager, a wife to a handsome billionaire, a daughter to a prestigious family called the Sandovals and a apparently a sister...again at the same time, she was Ruby, a wife to a simple handyman and a mother to an eight year old not forgetting an orphan with deceased parents.

She was trying to keep herself together, trying to hide the tears from her daughter calmly sleeping on her lap. She tried not to think too much about Marcus. The fact that she was Mikaella had started to sink in but the fact that the man she had trusted and loved for all those years was nothing short of a liar and a manipulative bastard hadn't quite sunk in.

I suppose that's why she was traveling half way across the world, to get answers. Answers that had been hidden from her for too long. The whole plane ride to LA was hours and hours of self meditation and trying not to get creeped out by the fact that the man seated across her. Roman, was it? Had stared at them the whole time as if at any moment they would escape.

The pilot gave them a heads up that they were already in LA and with a shaky breath she looked at Kylie calmly sleeping on her lap.

"I'll carry her. You are probably exhausted from all this",Roman suggested standing up and coming close to them. He unbuckled the seat belt taking Kylie from her hands and in just a moment, their hands slightly grazed against one another and a faint feeling of recognition or spark coursed through her.

Immediately she got out of the plane following him behind, the wind hauled her hair to her face, the sunlight stung her eyes for a minute and the noise from both the swooshing from the plane and from the guys offloading Roman's luggage overwhelmed her a bit.

A black SUV awaited them and a man in his late thirties leaned against the car looking at them or more so looking at her. She didn't know why but suddenly panic engulfed her and she stood rooted to the ground. She knew the guy and she didn't in the least bit like how scared she was. The guy too seemed surprised almost as if it was too good to be true, almost as if she wasn't supposed to be breathing.

Roman who was walking infront of her stopped to turn around,

"Hey, you okay?" He asked sweetly and although she hadn't been okay she replied,

"Y-yeah I'm fine"

"We have to go then",he urged. The creepy guy opened the door for them.

"Thank you, James"

James, so that was his name. He also held the door for her raising his head slightly,

"Ma'am"

The drive to Roman's house was quiet, she didn't want to engage in conversation when all the while Roman kept stealing glances at her thinking that she hadn't noticed and at the same time, she simply didn't trust the chauffeur to say anything infront of him. Within minutes, the car was slowly pulling up infront of huge black metallic gates.

The gates automatically opened revealing vast green foliage of a well tended lawn, a maze of beautiful flowers and old trees, trees that seemed to have been there for decades and finally, the mansion. If she lived in a heavenly place as such, surely she could have remembered parts of it like the fountain or the garden.

As if Kylie could sense the change of scenery, she wriggled in Roman's arms scooting to her mother's arms the second she realized that a stranger was holding her.

"Mom? Where are we?"

"Home",Roman muttered and the kid looked at her mother terrified.

"Don't worry sweetie. Everything will be alright", Mikaella assured stepping out of the car.

Roman did the pleasure of opening the huge hardwood door and Mikaella ventured in her hand clutching Kylie's tightly. The house was all like a dream, there was a little crystal chandelier that lit up the path to the living room which was no use really since the glass windows let light into the house quite efficiently.

And when they got to the living room, everyone in the room turned to look at her and Kylie. A whole audience gathered to welcome them and she felt overwhelmed especially when all of them looked at her like she was a ghost. A miracle even.

One woman from the little crowd stepped forward walking to where Mikaella stood with her daughter. She was probably in her sixties with lots grey hair showing on top of her black hair. She smiled warmly, the kind of smile that a mother gave a daughter.

"M-Mikaella?My daughter-you. You came back",she said inaudibly the tears on her cheeks streaming like waterfall.

The woman hugged her and Mikaella hugged her back. No one needed to tell her that the woman was her mother, in her heart she knew. They were almost identical, the high cheekbones, the smile, the eyes. Yes, she had a mother. After all these years of thinking that it was only her, Marcus and Kylie, she had another family. A large one infact.

"Um-i'm sorry. I-I don't remember you",she cried but her mother wiped away her tears the same motherly smile on her face.

"We are just glad you are back, Mick. Everything will come later the good thing is that you are home. With us"

She said her eyes going down to the little girl.

"And who are you, little angel?"

A bit shy at first, Kylie looked at her mother and Mikaella gave her the signal that it was okay to speak.

"Kylie. My friends call me Kylie"

"Well Kylie, I'm Roxanne, your grandma. You can call me gran, granny, grandma. Which one do you like?"

"I already got a grandma. Her name's Meemaw"

Kylie said and Roxanne's smile faded. Like Mikaella, Kylie couldn't adjust to everything in just a snap of a finger, she needed time to process.

Another younger man stepped forward with a woman carrying what seemed to be their baby in a stroller.

"Gus. Gustavo, y-your brother. She's Raquel, my wife. Your bestfriend. Ah- we got married last year",he chuckled,"I'm sure you would have scolded me had you been there. Just like when we were kids you always said I would be late to my own wedding. Well it sucks but you were right, I was late to my own wedding because I forgot the rings. Raquel almost refused to marry me"

They all laughed heartily and a tear of happiness escaped her eye. She must have been a pretty good sister, huh?

Raquel took her turn to speak,

"She's Mikaella. We named her after you. Because just like you, she's our ray of sunshine"

From Raquel came her father, the man who had called her his baby girl more than she could count. They all showed her pictures, pictures of her with them and for a moment she felt like she belonged. Even the maid, Marga seemed to have been fond of her, because the instant she saw Mikaella, she hadn't stopped crying. Tears of happiness, she said.

While she was getting acquainted with everyone, she heard footsteps against the stairs, one step at a time. She turned around, seeing him. Seeing him walk down the stairs, their eyes locked with each other. He was tall, he was bigger just like Roman had said.

She was the boy in her memory, the little boy with the warmest grey eyes she had ever seen. It was, Seth.

When he reached at the foot of the stairs, Mikaella thought that he would come running to her but instead he was heading out, until Roman called him.

"Seth? Aren't you going to say hi to your mom? She's back, kiddo. She's back"

Barely any emotion on his face, he removed the ear pods.

"She is not my mother. My mother died a long time ago!"

"Come on, Seth"

"No, grandma. I'm not going to waste my tears to a woman I know is not part of my life neither has she ever been. Look at all of you, happy right? Happy that she's back, right? But where was she when we needed her? Where was she, when I needed her the most?

When I got made fun of because I didn't have a mother, when everyone got to bring their mothers to school and I had none. Uncle Kev, says she can't remember us. Have you all asked yourselves why? Maybe it's because it's a choice she made. A choice to cut us off from her life. So dad, don't you dare ask me to embrace her when she's barely a stranger to me!"

And he left slamming the door behind him. Although she couldn't remember him, his words cut her deeply. She was a bad mother for leaving her son, for trusting in the wrong person, for not remembering!
