《A beautiful mistake》65

"Kevin called us for dinner. He asked that you be there", his father, Jacob called to inform him.
"I'm busy, dad. I might not make it,"Roman answered straightforwardly.
He had been busy for the past one week Kevin was out in New Zealand cruising. Today, was the one day he could take a rest from it all and finally patch things up with Lisa. He had planned to visit her house that evening, make amends and take her out in his private jet to a great Mexican restaurant he knew of.
Plus, whatever Kevin had to say wasn't that important. A whole week in New Zealand and what? Had he found the love of his life? Or maybe bought a vacation home that he wanted to show all of them?
"Roman, it sounded really important. Whatever thing you have planned cancel it, be here for your brother. Perhaps he also invited your in-laws",his father said over the phone.
Mikaella's parents, what on earth would they be doing there? And why would Kevin invite them when he knew how much they hated him? The whole thing didn't make sense to him and he didn't like it in the least bit. Even from a mile away he could smell trouble and the last thing he needed was for Kevin to trouble Mikaella's parents.
They had moved on, came to terms with the fact that their daughter was no more. Right about now, they must have been celebrating being grandparents to Raquel and Gustavo's daughter. They were happy for the first time in years and Kevin... according to Roman, would mess the little happiness they had in their lives.
"What? At what time is it?"
He raised his voice slightly.
"Five at our place. He said he will be here by five. And thank you. Thank you for putting everything between you aside and agreeing to come home. I'm sure he'll be happy to see you"
And Roman hung up, he was also sure that the dinner wasn't going to be a jolly one. With an exhausted sigh, he sat on his bed looking over at the outfit he had picked for a beautiful night with Lisa. She would have to wait, again! She must have already been pissed that he did nothing to get close to her, that he hadn't as much as followed her when she ran out of that hotel room nights ago or tried to contact her after they slept together.
Whatever Kevin had to say, it had better been important. Roman was tired of keeping his love life on hold. Lisa would be an excellent mother and a woman he would grow fond of and eventually learn to love like he did with...like he did with Mick.

"Roman?!",Raquel squealed, the moment he got to the garden where everyone was calmly sipping champagne or either conversing among themselves.
His mother,Debra with the help of some caterers had arranged a wonderful display of foods on a large dinner table just by their old garden. It was like thanksgiving all over again, only more tropical and outdoors. It's a shame Seth wasn't at the small gathering, he would have loved the chocolate fondue just by the edge of the table.
"Raquel, so nice to see you. How's Elle doing?" He asked taking the baby in his arms.
Being one month old, he could already tell that the kid would look more like Gustavo than Raquel. Holding her in his arms, brought a warm pleasant feeling in his heart. He hadn't carried a child before. Not even Seth.
"She's actually calmer. She likes this place because I haven't heard a single cry from her",Raque said pulling Elle's little hat to cover her forehead.
"She's so...so fragile! Am I holding her right?" Roman asked smiling at the cute baby staring at him.
"Relax Roman. She's not porcelain that will break at any moment",Raquel laughed taking Elle from his hands.
Elle was short for Mikaella. They had decided to call her that in memory of Mikaella. Gustavo chose the name and Raquel was hands in on the name.
"Wow, for a guy almost at forty, you still look thirty"
Raquel teased.
If Mikaella were here, she would be surprised to see Raquel and Roman laughing with each other let alone talking to each other. Raquel didn't like him at the start when he broke Mick's heart but her death brought them closer. Mick's death brought everyone closer because at the end of the day, she was loved by everyone.
"Thanks? I guess. You look good too"
"You don't have to lie, Roman. Who am I kidding? I look like a kid who's had way too much chocolate"
"You are not fat, honey", Gustavo came from behind, placing a protective arm on her shoulder.
"Who said anything about me being fat? Gus, do you think I'm fat? Are you saying I'm fat?" Raquel turned to her husband and he wore the most confused face Roman had ever seen,
"You said chocolate-I-assumed you meant- you thought- I thought. How's my nephew, Roman?"
Gustavo quickly changed the topic.
"Good, acting like a teenager and doing what kids his age do. He couldn't make it, they have a math test I believe, tomorrow"

"Send my regards. We've missed the kid"
Before he could reply, a soft clinging of the glass took everyone's attention away. His mother called them all to settle at the table, have dinner before Kevin showed up and explained the need to call everyone. In attendance was, Raquel, Gus and their baby, Kimberly and her husband Lucas, Mick's parents Roxanne and Phillip and finally his parents. There were two seats empty and Roman checked his watch.
It was already six, yet no sign of Kevin. They had dinner then desert, only after finishing desert did Kevin show up with a woman in tow carrying a brown file in his hands. Roman stared, putting two and two together, Kevin had probably eloped to marry the girl in New Zealand and the documents in his hands were their marriage certificate.
"I'm sorry to keep you all waiting",he started barely taking a minute to sit down.
"I'm sure you are all asking yourselves why you are here. Why I wanted all of you here. I know I'm the last person you want to see because some- what am I talking about- all of you think that Mick's death was my fault. I'm not going to deny it, it was my fault. Maybe if I had come out clean, confessed to driving under the influence and causing that accident-just maybe she would be seating at this very table.
Kimberly, you came to me based on something you saw. Something that was crazy to believe and yet I decided to look into the matter, thinking that if I could prove Mikaella is alive maybe they will all forgive me. After what I just found out, it's not a matter of forgiveness at all. Mikaella was my friend, I did this-I followed your crazy assumptions Kim because I too have missed her. I too, wanted my friend back-"
"What are you trying to say, Kevin?" Gustavo asked, clearly pissed with where the conversation was going.
"He's trying to save his skin like he always does. He can't live with his guilt so he's starting to invent things",Roman stood up, aggressively pushing the chair he sat on, behind.
Two strides and he had already reached where Kevin stood.
"Leave. If you know what's good for you, leave!" Roman grunted and Kevin barely flinched.
"I'm not leaving!"
"Then I'll make you leave",Roman grabbed his collar pushing Kevin behind that he almost bumped into the redhead standing by his side.
"Hit me, you've never held back. Hit me! Kick me out like a dog, call me names, say you are ashamed of me. Shout to the whole world it's my fault. But it won't change anything. It won't change the fact that Mikaella is alive!" Kevin shouted and everyone gasped.
Roman couldn't hold back, he punched Kevin till he fell on the grassy ground. It didn't end there, he straddled him throwing punch after punch. He knew it, he knew that Kevin would do something like that. Stir up things when they were going so well. Coming up with such absurd lies like those, only ignited pain in everyone's hearts especially his.
"Stop! He's telling the truth!I saw her. Stop. He's going to kill him. Someone stop him",the redhead grabbed Roman's shoulder trying to get him off of Kevin.
"I saw her too",another voice came from the dining table and Roman left Kevin's collar standing up and meeting the eyes of a shaken Kimberly.
"I-I thought I saw her in New York at my charity event. S-she looked like her. A lot like her. I told Kevin because I thought I was going crazy"
"People have look alikes, Kim!" Gus was the one to raise his voice this time, making baby Elle cry with all the commotion.
Roman turned to look at the redhead, he had seen her before. With Chloe. She was Chloe's friend. Judging by how terrified she was to see Kevin on the ground, Roman could tell she liked his brother.
She knelt to the ground taking the file from Kevin's hands,
"Here. Here's the proof you need. Her DNA samples matches those of Mikaella. There are pictures in th-there too",she stuttered handing Roman the documents.
With shaking hands, he unsealed the file, pulling out the documents one by one. Positive match, were the first words he read. He dug more into the file pulling out photos. Photos of her? Smiling while she touched the green plants next to a house. Photos of her with a man hugging her from behind...she had her hair cut, like a bob and more curly.
"She-she's alive?" He asked a tear cascading down his cheek and everyone on that table concluded one thing,
That Kevin wasn't lying!
