《A beautiful mistake》54

Days earlier, he was at the school for a random play of Romeo and Juliet and now he was at the school again for a totally different reason.
It upset him how many times he had to visit the school for the parent-teacher thing. He had missed an important meeting with the Chinese investors just to be here. Seth had assured Roman that his grades were fine and the whole thing would merely take minutes.
One hour past he was still staring at a blank chair waiting for the next teacher to walk in. The maths teacher had been kind enough to tell Roman that his son's grades were peaking at a faster rate while the geography teacher went on and on about how Seth made unnecessary jokes in his class teasing his toupee and that although he still aced his exams, such unruly behavior wouldn't go on in his class.
The next teacher to come in, should have been the English teacher but he took his time and it pissed Roman. He looked at the hour hand on his Rolex watch frustrated that it was already one. When he stood up from the seat ready to storm off, the homeroom door creaked open. Sharp heels clicked against the tiled floor.
He stared at her in amusement. Ofcourse it had to be Ms Carter and ofcourse his son had missed to enlighten him that Ms Carter was his English lit teacher.
'She's just my teacher, dad. Someone you have alot of things in common with'
Seth had said excluding the most important detail of all.
'I asked her out on your behalf'
Seth had said.
'You'll do great dad'
He had said. Only, there was nothing embarrassing as meeting the woman you'd left hanging at a restaurant.
"Mr Cervantes, sorry to keep you waiting. I suppose you are now familiar with the feeling of being kept waiting,"she smiled pulling down her red skirt and seating on the seat before him.

Roman tried to look at anywhere but her. She had kept him waiting on purpose, to punish him for leaving her hanging at the restaurant. Like a big boy, he tightened the cuff links on his suit shifted uncomfortably in his seat and said,
"Let's get started, shall we?"
And Ms Carter opened the file in her hand but not before giving him a scrawny look that would have scared even Davey Jones himself from his eternal locker.
"Seth has been doing great in English which is surprising because his friends have been failing terribly. Overall the kid is brilliant and has a bright future ahead"
"Well he takes after his old man ofcourse,"Roman chuckled heartily.
However Ms Carter didn't find him amusing at all, she had a rather bored look on her face which made Roman immediately tone down the laughter.
'Took after his old man?'
Why would he even make a comment as such? The woman was mad at him as it was and the fact that her eye twitched everytime they initiated eye contact should have warned him to back off. It was useless even trying to make conversation or meaninglessness chit chat with her so like a real man he did the only rational thing that would have been done in such a situation,
Apologized.
"Look, I know we got on the wrong foot. Actually I'm the one on the wrong for not showing up for the date. And for that, I apologize Ms Carter. We've been going through a lot lately"
Roman said and he didn't know why but her gaze made him uncomfortable. Wasn't she going to say something? Anything?
"You are trying to come up with excuses for not showing up by involving your late wife aren't you? Listen, Mr Cervantes, I also lost my husband an year ago but that doesn't mean I'll dwell on it forever. He's gone from this world but that doesn't mean he's gone from my heart.

So if you are trying to make up excuses based on your wife's death then I suggest you save your apologies for another day. Besides, when your son set this up, I was assured you and I had things in common. Looking at you now, and I'm the one apologizing because you are not my type"
Not my type. Those three words made him insecure. No one, absolutely no one had told him 'he wasn't her type'. He was every woman's dream guy, sure he was old but not that old that he couldn't woo a mere highschool teacher. The air was becoming hot, the fact that Ms Carter had merely spat in his face that she wasn't interested in him bothered him.
He wooed women like her all the time. Women like her wanted a man like him. Lean, muscular, broad shoulders to lean on, had money and was responsible. What could she have possibly meant when she said that? Had Seth put her up for this? That had to be it.
"W-what do you mean I'm not your type?"
Roman asked almost inaudibly.
She pursed her lips, her red lipstick making her lips slid against each other easily. Pulling up a smile, she challenged him raising her pen in mid air in this quirky way that pissed him.
"Simply put, I despise men like you. Men that think just because they have money, looks, smoking hot bodies and cocky attitudes women will somehow grovel at their feet"
Roman smirked,
"So what you are trying to say is that you think one of your student's dad has a smoking hot body"
She clutched the fountain pen in her hand hard standing up and once again pulling down her skirt. Roman followed her little action not that her exposed thighs fascinated him but the thought that she had seen his little action and concluded him as a pervert amused him a bit.
"I would say it was a pleasure meeting you but I'd be lying. See you in the next meeting, Mr Cervantes"
Standing up he closed the gap between them hanging onto her hand on instinct. He had behaved poorly with such a woman. Ms Carter was pretty no doubt. Simple and brutally honest, a quality that lacked in blondies. Her burning gaze went on where his hand was, where his hand grabbed her bare skin and out of embarrassment he let go.
"I'm sorry for how I've behaved since I opened my mouth. If my son thought we weren't different and that we had things in common then he had a right to. I want to fix this, to fix how you see me. Trust me am not a brute and I would hate for a beauty such as yourself to hate me"
He was trying to be honest. Trying to act like more of a man and not like a teenage boy. If Ms Carter had lost her husband last year, maybe they would have something in common to talk about. Probably share the same emotions or sentiments.
"Will you have dinner with me?"
"Right...So that I can be left staring at the menu all night, no thank you, Mr Cervantes"
"I believe you got me wrong, Ms Carter. I'm asking you to dinner in my house and I'll personally cook for us to make amends"
She stood there, raising her brow as if she were thinking about something and with a eureka she said bluntly,
"I'm only coming to your house because I do believe that the great Roman Cervantes couldn't possibly know how to cook"
"Yee men of little faith" Roman feigned hurt and Ms Carter chuckled. Her rich laughter filled the room and just for a minute he was taken aback by how her laughter made everything calm and better.
Could he? Could he possibly look at another woman the same way he did with Mick?
