《A beautiful mistake》49

"You are so lucky to have him,"Carmen jeered as soon as her husband, Marcus dropped her off at the community center she was working at.

"I'm lucky to have him but he's unlucky to have me,"she said quietly and both women stared at the red truck descending down the road.

Carmen took her hand ushering her inside. It was almost weeks. At least that's how it felt. And with those weeks, she had joined the 'Help a kid' foundation. Somehow after miraculously coming back from the dead as what most people would have said, the sudden urge to be around children overwhelmed her.

She wished she could tell Marcus. Tell Marcus what the doctor had told her before she was discharged from the hospital. Deep down she felt like a villain, like someone who Marcus didn't deserve to love. There were pictures of them together in their home, some happy, others goofy and others showing how much they were in love and yet she was reluctant to reciprocate his feelings.

Afraid to even share the bed with him, let alone touch him and let alone think of him in another way.

"From your face, I can tell you haven't told him yet" Carmen asked the minute they got to the warehouse.

"What face? I don't have a face,"she lied.

"Ruby, that's your 'I'm thinking too hard about my husband face and I haven't told him about my-"

"Shh,"she interrupted,"the whole world might as well know about it with how loud you are speaking"

"Then I got my answer. You haven't told him. What the hell are you waiting for?"

"I don't know. For things to stop being awkward between us. For things to be as normal as they were when I remembered him, when we loved each other"

What she meant was, when she loved him. She couldn't tell the difference anymore. She liked him for sure. She liked how he respected the boundaries she set. She liked how he'd sneak into her room at night just to peck her forehead thinking she was asleep. She liked how even before he went to work, he'd leave stick notes reminding her to do certain things like taking her meds, she liked how on weekends he drove her to the foundation, she liked how he still picked her up everyday despite of anything and best of all she liked how everyday he would remind her how much he loved her.

And amidst all of that, her heart tried pulling away, as if the feelings she had were a mistake as if they were meant for someone else. But wasn't Marcus her husband? Meaning that she had chosen that wonderful man to love, to care, to cherish and to have him by her side till eternity.

"The man has given you his all, Rue. Sounds to me like you are the one holding back. Like you are afraid to embrace your feelings. And please do not blame it on the amnesia since it's clear as day you have feelings for him"

"Are they that obvious?"

"Ooh please, everyone knows how you look at him when he comes to pick you up...like hot manna that fell from the sky"

She chuckled gasping a big no.

"Mmh so it's time you give the man a chance. I mean have you seen the man?"

"Careful, it's my husband we are talking about,"she chimed in laughing hysterically.

But out of that conversation, she had finally gotten the courage to embrace what she felt for Marcus. Sure she was afraid that Marcus wouldn't love the new her but eeh it was still her. She might have not remembered how their love story was but atleast this time they would make a new one.

After hours of helping out Carmen with t-shirts which were to be delivered on Monday, she left the foundation knowing that at exactly five p.m. her husband would show up to pick her up. Thinking about it alot, the reason as to why she agreed to come to the foundation on Saturdays was because she somehow didn't want to stay with Marcus at home. Ooh what a terrible person she had been, she reasoned.

She began to see how her husband must have suffered alot, thinking that he lost her, then her coming back and not remembering him and then her being cold towards him. Gosh, she was such a bitch that deserved a boot to the face.

The sound of a car honking brought her back to reality. And voila, Marcus was in his car as usual, waiting for her as always, looking handsome as ever. She watched him get out of the car and open the passenger's door for her.

She walked in, sat on the car's seat while Marcus hurriedly closed the door and hopped onto the driver's seat revving the engine.

"I-"

"I-"

They both started simultaneously and Ruby smiled.

"By all means, ladies first"

"Okay, I was thinking of getting some groceries for dinner,"she lied.

She freaking lied having had mastered all the words to tell him the whole afternoon. Carmen would be so disappointed if she saw her now.

"What did you want to say?"

"I-I kind of made plans with Hank so I wanted to tell you I wouldn't make it home for dinner"

"Ooh, it's okay" she huffed.

What was this new feeling? Why was she suddenly mad at Hank. Hank was Marcus' friend so why was she mad? Was it the fact that she felt abandoned? She had pushed Marcus away and somehow Marcus was now doing the same.

"We can always go grocery shopping if it's not okay with me hanging out with Hank"

"It's fine, we have some leftover chicken and rice in the fridge anyway"

"Okay cool"

Except she wasn't cool. And as immediate as they reached home and Marcus left, she called Carmen.

"Do you think he's tired of me? He's never bailed on me before even when I pushed him away! Am I being clingy?"

"Calm down. Take deep breaths and tell me what happened again?"

"I wanted to be with him like you suggested, like I've been dying to but he-he went out with Hank"

"Hank is his friend right?"

"Yeah"

"And you do realize he's hanging out with a friend not another woman"

"I do but have you thought about the possibility of Hank introducing him to another livelier woman? You do realize guys hang out with guys to get drunk and tell them how obnoxious the wife is, and how irritating she is. Am I too much for him to handle, is that what it is?"

"Rue, deep breaths. It's all in your head and for the sake of our friendship please don't call me again, I need rest"

And Carmen hung up making her throw her cellphone on the couch. An idea suddenly popped in her head, taking the phone she threw earlier on the couch she sent a text message to him,

"I'm not okay"

That would surely make him come home.

Half an hour later, the sound of a car pulling up in their driveway made her nervous. He came.

She stood by the door waiting for him to barge in and true to her thoughts, he barged in like a papa bear about to slaughter anyone in the premises.

With quick strides and with his dirty shoes stepping on the welcome mat, he put his hands on her cheeks.

"What happened? Are the headaches back? Do you have a fever? Ruby, talk to me"

And instead of talking she breached the gap and clammed her lips with his.
