《A beautiful mistake》34

Roman
Thirty minutes with her for lunch wasn't enough to quench the desire that ignited within him everytime he was with his wife. Lunch had gone pretty smoothly with her gasping now and then recalling how she had found her brother in bed with her best friend, Raquel.
It had also come as a surprise to him in a way. He hadn't interacted with Gustavo that much but Raquel, sheesh, the woman was not his spectator. She was like a tornado in a calming day, a hurricane that would appear all of a sudden and wipe everything out. Ofcourse he pretty much deserved Raquel's hate for heartbreaking Mikaella countless times but still the woman was a lot to handle. Quite frankly, he didn't see Gustavo and Raquel lasting together for an year.
Looking back at how Mick's beautiful face drove him crazy. He still wondered how in an instant a woman, not his type had really captured his heart that much. He loved her and he wished they could stay like that forever.
Swinging on his swivel chair, something he never did while in the office, he took the fountain pen on his desk hoping that the hours would go by and he would wound up home. Jaime King, his private investigator had taken so much of his time. He looked at the wrist watch only to be infuriated that the man had actually been an hour late.
How much information was there to dig up about a shallow deputy hitting on his wife? Roman couldn't ignore the fact that something about Marcus Pierce didn't seem right. The man was so much more than he claimed and Roman set it ought to be his mission to uncover his secrets. It was the least Mikaella deserved. Mikaella deserved to know what sort of friends she associated herself with, right?

Or was this a way of ensuring that Marcus Pierce wouldn't woo his wife in just a snap of his fingers? Either way it didn't matter to him. What he knew was, that seeing Mikaella smile in the arms of another man drove him crazy. Even the gringo, Phil, hadn't made Mikaella smile like that not like the way Marcus did at Charles Griffin's party.
He had without a doubt lost all hope of Jaime showing up at his office today. Exhausted, he arranged his files into a pile and put the glistening fountain pens in line across the files. Reaching for his jacket on the hanging rack, he put on the jacket making sure that the cuff links weren't tight to strangle his wrists.
"Sir. Leaving already? Mr King says he has an appointment with you," his secretary intruded his office and with a nod and a mere wave of the hand he said,
"Let him in"
Jaime King, his private investigator entered. He still looked as sharp as ever though the stubble and the weary bags beneath his eyelids were new. Something about Jaime's honesty was one thing that drove him to employ him in the first place. The man even in his late fifties knew how to do his work despite the tufts of grey hair starting to show in his once gel black hair.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, kiddo"
He smiled taking a seat across Roman's huge oval desk.
"I must say, you've never been late to submit a task. Is the Deputy that much of an interesting person?" Roman chuckled but the smile on the old guy's face died.
It was the same face he had shown up with when he first brought a full report of his ex fiance, Joanna's whereabouts. Back then, he couldn't believe Jaime's results. Joanna was the perfect woman that wouldn't cheat on him no matter what a private investigator said. And boy was he wrong when he found the dang woman cheating on him in his own home.

"Funny you should say that,"Jaime started and for absolutely no reason a thin sweat ran down Roman's back. What things were Marcus hiding in his closet? And if there were many, did they somehow connect to his family more so his wife?
"I'd rather you check out what I found by yourself,"Jaime continued sliding the brown file he had in his hands against Roman's glass desk.
Taking the paper in his hands and unsealing it, he removed the documents one by one. Some were of Marcus' patrolling the city with his usual smug face and a shiny jeep that spelled out LA police and the others were him eating alone a burger in a diner.
"What am I looking at exactly? A sad man wasting away by eating greasy burgers?"
With a huff, Jaime had his finger on the diner's logo, McHenry's Diner.
"Sir it's the same one"
Suddenly his heart beat rapidly, the same same diner had appeared in his life after years of trying to bury what had happened eight years ago.
"There are so many diners in LA. They probably have the same names, Jaime"
"Yeah but that's the thing. Marcus Pierce was a thriving architect nine years ago, an year later, he somewhat joins the task force and years later he is promoted to Deputy. Why would he leave his profession to become a mere officer? I followed his every move like you said and everyday he does the same thing.
Go to work, leave for work at nine p.m. before heading to this diner to eat a burger"
He didn't want to admit it, it was the same diner but how could Marcus possibly understand what had happened there. How was he connected? Or was it pure coincidence?
The many questions running through his mind tormented him. The phrase that the truth always catches up to you was coming true. Had Marcus set out his mission to investigate the accident. Was he onto him? Onto his secret? Onto the past he had thought he buried years ago? No. He needed to be come, there was no way Marcus knew anything. Was that the reason he tried getting close to Mikaella?
"Picture number four confirms what we know"
And Roman lifted the papers one by one, looking at the picture with the initials '#4'
"It's her"
"Exactly and she happens to be Marcus Pierce's wife"
