"Hey, I need to place an order for a spider man cake with buttercream icing. I want the words to say 'Happy birthday Daloni'" Heaven specifically told the baker, talking on the work phone.
"When would you like to pick it up?"
"Next Tuesday is his birthday, I'll pick it up that day when you open, I just sent over the cake." Heaven replied, emailing the baker a picture of how she wanted the cake to look.
They went over a couple more things such as prices, package deals, and treat bags. After the conversation was over, Heaven pulled out her phone to check on the delivery for the gifts that she ordered.
She ordered him a customized spider man powerwheel truck, lots of toy trucks and legos, she was even having a human sized character come dressed as spider man. She wanted it to be all about Daloni, and she was gonna make sure he felt special.
Jayda had called in because she had a huge hangover from the night before. Heaven had agreed to pick up Jayda's work being that Jayda always did it for her. Both girls were just waiting for Sharon to hire more people.
"Heaven the board wants to see you now." Sharon mentioned, walking up to the desk with her clipboard. She was very stern when she told Heaven that the board would hear about her large investment.
Heaven slightly sighed but followed her boss to a big conference room. Walking in she mentally cursed seeing six white men in suites and three white women in dresses. Even though Sharon was black, she never had any of her workers back.
"Good afternoon Ms. Bridges, please sit." The CEO of the hospital spoke, holding her hand out to any seat that Heaven wished to sit in. Heaven picked the seat closer to the door.
"So you probably know why you're here. It's been brought to our attention that you made a large investment into one of your patient's Daloni Brooks. Tell us about that."
"With all due respect, I don't understand why me making a payment to a child's treatment is such a bad thing. Daloni has no family and the system failed him, yall were literally going to dump him back into the city's care just for him to die." Heaven said, with frustration clearly laced in her voice. She wasn't going to hold anything back. Now was her chance to speak up.

"Nurse Bridges, are you aware that Daloni is literally on a ticking time limit. He could die at any moment. He isn't getting any better." Mr. Grey sighed. He was Daloni's doctor.
"Y'all giving up on him just like everybody else. I don't understand how people give up on little kids when they have a chance. He's made it this far, he just needs support from his doctors and nurses." Heaven objected.
"We've learned that you give him more attention to him than your other patients, such as sleeping with him. You do know that nurses or doctors are supposed to avoid all attachments at any costs."
"Are y'all about to terminate me or not? Daloni is four, battling a bone cancer that spreaded to his lungs and now his brain. He has no family, he has nobody, and he's always in pain. All of my other patients get visitors every single day. Daloni is alone. Yes we're attached to each other, but at the end of the day I'm his nurse and my job is to make sure he's comfortable whenever I punch in on the clock." Heaven stated.
"What if your child was in my care battling the same cancer? Wouldn't you want me to treat him or her with love. Y'all are failing this damn kid!"
Everyone in the room sat silently appalled by her small outburst. This wasn't their first rodeo with Heaven, the first time they met was when Heaven defended herself against a drunk patient that came into the ER. They knew Heaven always said whatever she had to say.
"I think she should be suspended without pay." Sharon stated. Honestly Sharon was jealous of Heaven. She didn't appreciate that Heaven did things her way instead of the book.
"We've made our decision to throw this out the window. As you mentioned there is nothing in the book that says you can't pay for a patient's treatment. However we strongly suggest you start to prepare yourself. He isn't getting any better." CEO explained.
"Thank you." Heaven mumbled, standing up and going back to her work area. She was now aggravated and slightly pissed that they wasted their time. The meeting was pointless.

"Code blue! Code blue!"
Heaven was all the way in the waiting room when she heard the siren echoing through the pediatric wing. Her heart dropped seeing all of the doctors and nurses run past her.
Her voice got caught in her throat when she saw everyone running into Daloni's room. Before she could even think her feet ran into his room. When she entered her eyes watered at the amount of pressure they were putting on Daloni's chest to revive him.
"C'mon papa." She whispered, trying to hold back her tears.
"We got a pulse." Doctor Grey announced holding his finger to Daloni's neck. Doctor Grey knew he needed to intubate but in the corner of his eyes he saw Heaven silently crying.
"Nurse Bridges, we need to intubate. If we intubate, you know there's a chance that he may never talk again. Care to have your last conversation?" He asked as Daloni's eyes lowly opened.
Heaven wiped her face and nodded her head. She wasted no time running to his side and grabbing his hand. Everyone stood around to give her some time.
"Papa can you fight just a little while longer?" Heaven asked voice breaking at the end. Daloni's eyes were nearly shut but he tried his best to look at Heaven.
"Tired." Daloni whispered just above a soft voice. Daloni had been fighting for so long. With him being so small and young the cancer was getting more aggressive.
Heaven held in a choked sob and nodded her head. "You're so strong. Stronger than spider man." She didn't know what else to say. She could see in Daloni's eyes that he was barely hanging on.
"Pider man." Daloni whispered as a single tear slipped down his cheek.
"I love you Daloni." Heaven softly spoke in his ear. She didn't want him to suffer anymore, but something was telling her that there was still hope.
"Love mommy too." Daloni said as his eyes closed.
Doctor Grey instructed for somebody to get Heaven while he intubated Daloni. Intubation was basically the last solution to keep Daloni alive. He would be depending on the ventilator to stay alive.
"Pl-ease just let me go!" Heaven yelled trying to get out of the hands of her coworkers. They eventually released her watching as she ran out of the room.
Running in the bathroom, Heaven locked the door and slid down holding her head in her knees. The sobs that she had been holding in were now filling the bathroom. Daloni had called her mommy and knowing that he might not ever have a conversation again broke her.
"God please." She begged through her cries. "Please send a miracle." She added now looking at the ceiling waiting for God to tell her that everything would be okay.
"Ta-ke me." She sniffled. "He hasn't gotten the chance to live yet. He never commited any sins lord. Punish me, not him." All she wanted was for to Daloni to have a painless fun life. He never got to experience any of it.

A King in the Clouds
Tanlar. A cruel, repulsive, and foul word. It meant untitled, officially, but it also meant ungifted, unable, unworthy, unnecessary, unhuman. It was more a curse than a term, a badge only the damned and condemned wore. To be a tanlar was to know your life, your entire being, was insignificant. Once Kaizer had resigned himself to such a fate, but those times had passed. He may have been untitled, but he was anything but untalented. He refused to scrape by at the bottom of society. Those who stood above him could sneer all they liked, but he wouldn’t suffer being stepped on for long. He’d be better, much better. But of course he would be. ‘Fate’ demanded it so. [Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] What To Expect: The story of a boy becoming a man becoming a king + everything that entails. Largely gamelit, but later arcs could be called litrpg. Also schemes. A lot of schemes. I do love some good ol' fantasy politics and intrigue. Minimum Word Count a Week: TBA after Writathon Release Time(s): Daily for as long as I can/until the end of the Writathon. I also write The Deathseeker [Returning Dec 5th]
