《Her Mate - Olivia (The Gray Wolves Series #1)》The Hate Inside

As soon as the door opens and I take a step in, Eva kneels on the ground, one of her hands on her mouth and the second one holding my top to stop me from going farther.

"Don't, Olivia. It is dangerous." After freeing myself, I pick up a mask with limited oxygen reserve next to the elevator door.

I sit beside her and pass it up to Eva's head to help her breathe better.

"Inhale and exhale slowly. It's gonna help you. You'll be fine in a few minutes. Don't take it off. When you are out of oxygen, the filter will prevent the spores from entering your lungs. I did not think it would affect you this much, or I would have been more careful. I am sorry, Eva," I add as I rub her back a little.

I help her out of the elevator and then let her rest on the floor.

"I assume I will be good, but I will be prudent. Wait for my brother and Alec to show up. I expect they will not be long."

As I stand up to go away, Eva seizes my wrist.

"How do you do that? Act like if it's nothing?" Eva asks me, still breathing loudly despite the mask.

"You did not detect, but there are budding seedlings all across the territory. We're exposed to it from a young age, even more for the warriors and the Packhouse members. That's our little secret, so try not to reveal it when we get out," I respond with a smile.

I turn and experience the splendid view in front of me. Landscape in the heart of prison: the whole place looks like a tremendous field blanketed with flowers.

Hidden underground, thanks to artificial light and an appropriate humidification system, live hundreds of flowers. Blue, purple, yellow, and even some white ones cover the ground. The only things that remind us we are in prison are the tiled floorings that lead to a glass cell opposite the elevator. Yet, the door is open.

At the center of the cell, a man is on a chair, handcuffed, and it looks like he had a tough talk with someone.

I move towards the man and squat in front of him. He smiles at me as he opens his eyes.

"Look at what we've got here. A young she-wolf. I presume you're from the pack as you don't seem to suffer this private greenhouse," he smirks. I catch his chin and raise it up.

"Was it my brother or our Beta who did that to you?" I ask as I touch the marks on his face. Doubtless, that was my brother. I don't need his answer. I would recognize Jonas' work above all. He does not fight often, but it happened a few times.

Mostly against wolves who dared to look at Julie or me in inappropriate ways.

"The Alpha's sister, then?" He laughs in an absolutely creepy way. Damn, I don't like hysterical rogues.

"This does not facilitate healing," he states as he turns his head to the flowers. As he tries to move his hands, he groans. I glance at the red lines on his wrists. Silver handcuffs.

"I can tell he dislikes you. We're not that cruel, usually. But you threatened our Luna," I add, toughening my grip on his chin.

I let him go after a moment and go to the cabinet and open one door. I pick up one of the jars. I pull the chair next to the cabinet to deal with the man.

I open the ointment jar.

"Look at me," I say in a direct but not too brisk voice.

The man raises his head and glances at me. I start to put some cream on his wounds.

"What's this?" the man demands.

"Aconitum Anthora," I say, with my calm tone. The man opens his eyes wide in horror. I sigh loudly like I am bored by his childish attitude.

"Don't worry. That's the only one you can play with without risk. I have no reason to poison you," I say.

At least, for now.

Selene chuckles as I think about these last details.

"Should I thank you?" the man adds, as his wounds already start to heal.

"It's up to you. I don't really care. I don't know what you told my brother, and even if I suppose you deserved that, I'm sure the silver will block you from getting up. All the wolfbane flowers will prevent you from turning into your wolf. So I don't judge you're a menace right now," I answer, still very calm in my chair.

As I say that, I hear the ring indicating the elevator door is closing.

"Talk of the devil, and here he comes," I say. Then, pointing to the elevator, the man also glances at me.

"Do you want me to ask the questions? Or you might prefer my brother... or my mate?" The man does not respond to the question. I sigh. Men...

It takes two minutes for the elevator door to open again.

"Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock. Here goes the clock," I whisper, approaching my mouth from the villain's ear.

Four bodies exit the elevator as the door opens. Four furious bodies. The rogue does not need more time to make up his mind.

"You. I want you," he screams.

I get up and hastily jump to the red button near the door.

"Olivia, don't..." my brother starts, practically howling.

"do that," he adds, muttering. Then he shakes his head to show his disapproval.

"What the fuck are you doing, Olivia Evans? Get out of here! Right! Now!" Alec adds, his eyes shooting daggers at me.

I think we pissed him off, Selene.

I speak to my wolf.

I don't think we did. I'm sure we did, as I can perceive Ares' wrath, and it's not solely against your rogue. So we should end this quickly.

Selene says playfully in my head.

"Olivia. Don't fucking do what you plan to do. I swear I'm going to be mad at you. I might even punish you," Alec growls. I turn to him and smile lovingly at him. He shakes his head no, and I can't do anything but answer him in a whisper.

"I'm sorry. I'll make it quick," I say. My answer is obviously not the one Alec expected, as he crosses his arms against his chest and looks at me even more furiously than before.

"A little fight for the new couple," the rogue says with a laugh.

"Nothing of your concern. Don't worry. Then, let's go back to our little chat," I say, sitting in front of him.

"What do you want, exactly? Why do you want to kidnap my brother's mate?" I ask him.

He starts to laugh.

"Who said we wanted your brother's mate?" the rogue says, moving a little. The handcuffs stop him from moving closer, and he groans as the silver burns his skin.

"The one Elijah killed during the first attack. He said, 'we'll get the Luna.'" I answer the rogue.

"You're so wrong that it is almost funny." I'm sure I'm the only one who can hear him. A grin appears on his face.

"The minute you knew the Prince was your mate, you became his Luna. At this exact moment, you got a lot of enemies, Luna. Some do not want the Prince to become the King, nor you to become the Queen. Some people will do their best to change your plans for the future. Some will do their best to end your Prince. But, no matter the plans, they all start with a missing Luna called Olivia Evans." My eyes widen.

I'm torn between anger and horror. Some people want to tear me apart from my mate. They want to kill him.

My babies' father.

My mate.

My eyes fill with tears. My heart beats faster and louder.

"Don't be sad, young Luna. Neither you nor your Prince will suffer for long," he says, his voice sounding like a mad man's.

I get up, throw the chair away, and grab him by his neck.

"Never threaten my mate, nor my family ever again. Give me names, or I swear I end you now," I growl at him. If needed, Selene will get out and end his miserable life.

Then the man laughs again. Is he completely delusional?

"Your enemies are already in. Soon joined by newcomers. You're done, Luna." The man smirks at me, and his eyes turn a crazy red.

Enough.

Selene screams inside of me. The growls even get out of my mouth as I growl alongside her.

I lift the man in the air and throw him away: he falls against the wall near the cabinet, the silver handcuffs breaking as the chair is screwed on the floor.

I try to breathe as I turn toward him. I need answers, not a useless corpse. I have to know who wants to destroy my mate, take my babies away, and ruin my whole life.

As I'm about to grasp him again, he twists and stabs my hand with a silver tool.

"Damn, it hurts," I say as I take a few steps back.

I take the scalpel off my hand and move the scrunchie that is around my wrist. It is stained with blood as it passes over my wounds, but I don't care.

I set my hair into a quickly done bun. Then, I feel like I lose it.

My sanity.

This little piece of kindness that is forever with me is hiding somewhere deep inside me. Too deep.

I feel in a bizarre state. I can't say I'm in control of my actions, but Selene is not leading the waltz, either. That's a totally uncomfortable feeling.

Fury's burning inside me.

Why do I sense like I've previously experienced something like that?

Selene. What's going on?

She does not answer. All I know is that rage is filling me.

I get back to the man and clutch him, my nails turning into claws and penetrating his torso. His blood reddens my hand, then my arm. Like a monster, I almost enjoy the wails that escape this despicable creature's throat.

"You see, I think I'm upset." My voice is a weird mixture of mine and Selene's.

"I'm not actually patient when people disrespect the people I care for or myself. And you, as a filthy rogue, should know not to threaten the eldest child of an Alpha," I growl as my second-hand grabs his arm, which breaks at an eerie angle.

I push the man against the back wall of the cell. I don't hear what's happening around me, but I know someone is growing nervous near me. I am pretty sure that's Alec.

I'm almost done; I have to focus. Nevertheless, it is harder and harder as this craziness envelops me gradually.

I walk to the cabinet and take two small pots. There are plants in both of them. One is pale purple, while the other is dark bright purple.

I take them both and sit beside the man, still lying on the ground.

"Do you know what they are?" I put the two plants on the ground. I seize one of the pale purple petals. Then I put it on the open wound where the man's arm broke.

He cries as the petal brushes his flesh.

"Aconitum lycoctonum. The usual Northern wolfbane. Toxic and deadly for a wolf. A normal dose would hurt a werewolf, stop him from shifting for several days if injected," I explain calmly. I put half another petal on his lips. Tears fill his eyes. I calmly chew the other half.

"You see, the problem is that sometimes, even with this lycoctonum, some people are not actually talkative. Just like you." I feel like I'm becoming a slave to my darkest urges.

I am going to hurt this man.

"This," I say, moving the other plant closer to his head, still on the floor.

"This one is aconitum napellus. This one is one of the deadliest species, even to a werewolf. Even the contact of it hurts like hell. It could even kill a wounded wolf. Would you like to try, Mister I-don't-want-to-give-names?" I take one petal, but before I can put it against the rogue's skin, I am dragged away from him.

I know people are yelling at me. But everything seems so obscure. I want this man dead. Anyone on my path is an enemy.

The pair of arms that were wrapping around me let go of me.

As I turn, following the smell of blood and aconitum mixed, something stops me.

I am shivering at the touch. Nonetheless, I can't hear clearly.

Then they crash against my lips: Alec's lips. I slowly feel his hands on my cheeks, covered with water: it's salted like tears.

"It's going to be okay, little wolf. I'm going to take you out. Selene needs to run. Just stay focused on my voice," Alec says. I feel he is uneasy. Why is he nervous around me?

I take a quick look and see the man on the ground, the blood splattered all around him and on me.

"What have I done, Alec? What?" Before I can continue, Alec kisses my lips and takes me in his arms.

"Selene needs her mate. Mating, it helps the wolves to be more balanced. That's another reason lycans are so stubborn, violent, and wild until they are mated. You're overwhelmed by it and never learned how to deal with it. Ares will take care of Selene, but we can't do it here. You need to turn outside," Alec says as the door closes on us. The elevator moves, and we quickly are on the first floor, on our way to the woods.

Alec's paces are quick, as if we were running out of time.

As we are outside, there is nothing but silence around us. Finally, Alec lets me down and holds my face.

"Turn into Selene, Liv. You will feel better, I promise. Please, do that for me, little wolf," he whispers before slowly kissing my lips. I close my eyes to find Selene and let her take control.

Darkness.

Darkness is all I feel around me.
