《-The World Saga-》Chapter 16: The Great Divide

We make our way further up the mountain until we get to a flat area. We traveled for a few hours now so we should have lost the werewolves if they decided to come after us. I hop down off the goat as we find a small place to set up camp. Aleem protests saying that it would be better if we kept traveling. I told him that we needed to rest. Lupa runs off into a wooded area as Aleem sets up a small tent. I collect wood and try to start a fire.

For some reason I don’t feel the cold. My body feels warm and sometimes hot. Maybe… No. I don’t have magic. It’s impossible. After failing for the fifth time trying to start a fire, I stomp my feet in anger, “Light already.” A small flame starts within the wood. I pause slightly shocked and frown. I bend down and go to touch the fire.

“Testing your magic?” I hear Aleem say behind me. I jump causing the fire to grow brighter slightly. I glare at him.

“Of course not. It’s just…” I turn to face him and see that he has a mini book with him. He is writing things down as almost he is studying me. I frown and reach for the book. He moves away closing the book.

“This will be interesting how you pull this off.” I roll my eyes and sit next to the fire annoyed.

“I thought you didn’t care about the world?” I hear him laugh slightly as he sits down across from me.

“I don’t care. It’s something that I have seen rise and fall a couple times now.” He seems cold to that fact.

“Why?” He pauses almost caught off by the question.

“Why? What do you mean?” I shrug.

“Why do you write things down? Like what benefits you to do this?” He doesn’t say anything for a long time. He finally looks at me.

“It passes the time.” I give a look and he looks away. “When my world was ready to be destroyed, a few powerful magi found Crag’s Keep. They thought they could keep Crag happy and prevent the world from ending. It didn’t help. While all the other magi tried to prevent the world from ending, I was in the office writing. I didn’t even know the world ended.” I pause extremely confused.

“How did you survive?” He rolls his eyes.

“Crag’s Keep and a few other places are protected from the world’s end. Crag found me after the gods restarted the world. He thought it would be… funny to keep me alive as a servant. So I was granted the gift of eternal life. I figured I would a Keeper of Knowledge. It was better than just serving Crag.” I sigh laying down.

“I don’t understand why you wrote stuff down. Seems dumb to me.” He laughs at me slightly.

“Knowledge has power. I’ve been around for about five world’s ending. Eventually I knew this cycle was going to be broken. I just didn’t know that I would lose all my books with it.” He says full of hate. I shrug and look at him.

“Maybe you should have done something earlier.” He frowns a lot and turns away from me.

“Maybe you should have shown up sooner.” I go to say something but Lupa runs out of the forest with a rabbit in her mouth. I hear Aleem’s stomach growl as I get up and take it from Lupa. I start to clean it the best I can. I put it over the fire as Lupa sits down next to me staring at it. I look at her.

“So how long are you going to be like this?” Lupa looks at me and whimpers slightly. Aleem rolls his eyes.

“Your pet will probably stay like that until we get to the Southern Desert. Even though it has magical healing, it has to fight off the werebeasts infection. It will beat it but it won’t be able to help us. That is why I think we should have left it.” Lupa growls at Aleem as he backs up slightly. I pet her trying to get her to calm down.

“I told you I am not going anywhere without her.” He shakes his head mumbling idiot under his breath. I take off the rabbit and give Lupa a leg. Aleem’s stomach growls louder and I hand him a leg annoyed. He takes it and eats it quickly. I munch on my leg thinking. Maybe I do have magic, but that would mean that the world is actually ending. Even if I don’t think I am supposed to save it, a lot of people do. Aleem plans on finding me a teacher and teaching me to use magic. My head feels warm as Lupa pets her head on my lap. I start to pet it. Okay, Let's say that I can do magic, find a teacher, and learn how to control it. How will I save the world? Aleem “knows” that it will be revealed in the Southern Desert. I don’t trust him or anything that’s going on. I feel Lupa fall asleep as I hear soft snores coming from her. I look down at her and sigh. Maybe I can try do something. I lay down and I keep thinking about what to do. I soon find myself fast asleep slightly cuddling Lupa.

I wake up in the morning to Aleem shaking me awake. I open my eyes and he seems worried, “We need to move now. Something is coming.” We quickly pack up everything and climb our goats. We make our way up the mountain trying to get across it. Lupa keeps ahead of us to make sure that we won’t come upon anything. We start to reach the peak of this mountain. I look to the other mountains surrounding us. Even though the other mountains are way taller than this one, there seems to be something off about the mountains. Once full of snow are baren. I see the brownish rock that make of the mountain. We reach the top of the mountain and we get to see the Green Belt.

The Green Belt looks weird. The woods closest to us are dead and like a wave more trees are starting to die. I also notice monsters slowly going into the Green Belt. I can tell by the stench and bodies littering the field dividing the Northern Mountains and Green Belt. I look to Aleem, “How are monsters leaving the Northern Mountains? I thought the mountains prevent them from coming over.” Aleem looks toward the mountains and I look that way. I pause shocked to see a giant crack dividing multiple mountains apart.

“The giant’s death will crack the earth. Causing the forgotten ones to raise again. The Green Belt will soon be overrun with monsters that they forget about.”

“I.. did this?” I ask already knowing the answer. Aleem nods and Lupa whimpers at me. I put those thoughts out of my head. “We need to move know. At this rate, we won’t be able to get into the Green Belt.” Aleem nudges his goat down the mountain. I look at Lupa one more time before heading down following Aleem. Nothing like going home and bringing it’s destruction with me.
