《52 stories》Week 35: On the run

After a few minutes of driving in an awkward silence, Nina suddenly move to hit me hard on my arm, almost making me lose control of the car for a few seconds. I scream out in pain and surprise and she shouts ''You promised us that everything were going to be okay!''
''Ouuch, I'm sorry! I didn't know the army would come to... to... do that and...'' I try to hold my tears but I can't so I let them flow. I do feel guilty even if nothing of what happened was my fault ''Listen, when a bunch of random dudes with guns tell you to shut up and listen you do! They said if I didn't comply they would kick me out and there was no way I was leaving you alone with them! I'm sorry!''
Samuel puts a reassuring hand on Nina's shoulder ''We are out now and you have a plan to put us all in safety, right Jon?''
''Huh, yes?''
Anna gives me a side look ''You do, right?''
''I didn't have much time to think this through but I know a place where we can be safe.''
So I go on and explains to them how my parents are way too deep in this conspiration/apocalyptic stuffs so they taught me how to drive on small road where there is almost no police driving around. How they have hidden cars everywhere and a secret lair that is not registered anywhere. Don't ask me how they did this, I never listened to this nonsense, but maybe I should have after all. So right now we are driving to one of the hidden car so it will be harder to find us. Everyone in the car listen to me in silence, I can see that they think like me, they never believed in all those theories but now that we have the army after us because almost everyone in the car have super powers that they got from a weird cloud... Maybe some theories weren't so crazy after all.
Another awkward silence and Pat asks if I can put some music or something, so I turn on the bluetooth and the last song that I listened to start. And of course it is the geekiest song that I have in my whole playlist! Hero too from the anime My Hero Academia. Everyone in the car burst out in laughter. Everyone goes on with their own teasing phrase:
''You are such a nerd!''
''Did you listen to this to give you the courage to do all of this?''

''Weeb!''
''Well that is the perfectly appropriate music for the occasion!''
I try to not laugh too while saying''Well I am not the one that asked for music!'' I turn the whole thing off and we can't help but laugh for the next few minutes, relieving some of the stress that we've been through for the last few days.
We just managed to finally stop laughing that my phone rings, making us all jumps. I see on the little screen on my car dash that it's my parents that are calling. I give an shy look to my passengers and pick up the phone and since I know they are on speaker phone on their side I say ''Hi mom, hi dad.''
their voices blast loud and clear in the car's speakers ''We heard on the police frequency that they are looking for five fugitives in a car exactly like yours. Is that you?''
I can feel the panic rising inside of me, the polices are already chasing us, I try to keep a steady voice when I answer ''Yes, it's us.''
''We are so proud of you son!''
''Mom! We are criminals!''
''You broke the system! You did it son! Now you know what do to right?''
''Yes?''
''Obviously not because your phone is still on!''
I let out a big sigh. Too many details to think about! My parents then talk to everyone, asking them for a way to contact their families so they can tell them that they are safe for now. They remind me again to throw away my phone and do what I have to do. I thank them and tell them how much I love them before hanging up and turning my phone off. Tracking or not, I am not throwing this away, it cost me way too much. And when it's off, it's safe. The others exchange weird looks before all staring at me ''What?'' I ask them. And again they all go with their little phrase:
''Your parents are... Special.''
''Supportive.''
''So sweet.''
''Amazing!''
I'm about to answer but we hear and see flashing police lights behind us. I look down at my speed and I'm going way too fast. I got distracted by the conversation that I completely forgot to look at my speed! I ask what we should we do. They tell me that I'm suppose to be the one to know! I decide that it's better to stop. Once the police is out of the car, maybe we will be able to out run them...

The police slowly walk to the window and I roll it down. They look at each of us really slowly and they get a call from their walkie talkie, they want to know if the car that they just saw is us. I can see everyone tensing around me, getting ready to fight for their lives, but the police raise a finger in front of their mouth ''No it wasn't them, false alarm.''
We all look at them in disbelief, they look at us again and say ''You should find another car fast, you may not be that lucky the next time.''
''Yes, we know. We are almost at the new car. Thanks officer. For everything!''
''Now go before I change my mind.''
I don't need them to tell me twice, I drive away as fast as I can without going too fast either and we finally reach the hidden spot for the other car. I park the car right beside the other one. It's a black mini van with tinted windows so everyone will be more confortable and hidden with this one. I step out of the car and take off the license plate and give it to Anna''Throw this as far as you can in the wood please.'' And she does. She throws it so far away and with such ease it amaze all of us. Pat can't help but tease her a little ''Well if I had super strenght too I could do that!''
''Oh I didn't have to use my power to do that!''
''Are you sure you are not a little bicurious?'' Nina ask, half-joking, half-serious.
''Yes unfortunatly, I'm straight,sorry.''
''Such a shame!''
I finish to screw the new plate on the other car and tell them that we should go now. We all step in and I drive away to the secret lair. Trying to remember the way. I went a few time already, but it's the first time that I'm going there alone, with the police looking for with with four other fugitives... It's a bit hard to find the way without my parents being there to help me. I do have to go back one or two times, but I finally find the place. I drive a little bit farther and hide the car in another hiding spot and tell everyone that from now on, we will have to walk. They all nod and step out of the car.
It's not a really long walk, but it's not really a road either. I can see that all of us are not used to walk in the middle of the wood. Once we finally reach the small cottage, we are out of breath and sweating little crazy. I can see them all collapse on the couch or on a chair, they must be exhausted. They had to use up a lot of their energy to escape and all the stress... I reach for the small boxed juices that my mother always keep here and I give it to them ''You need sugar before you pass out, drink this.''
They all take it and drink it really fast. I go back outside for a few second to turn on the generators and look around to make us a little something to eat. I tell them that there is a small shower in the back of the cottage, but it's rain water so it's going to be really cold. I show them the spare clothes and towel and they all take their turn in the small shower. They don't stay in for long and once they are all clean, the small lunch I prepared is ready.
We all eat in silence but we all look up when we think that we heard something. We all look at each other, not knowing what to do. We can here footstepts right outside of the cottage. The door opens slowly... Really slowly... We are all on the tip of of feet, ready to run and/or fight, only to see my parents stepping in. I rush to them and hug them like I never hugged them before. They have clothes, food, medecine, everything that we need. Even papers and pens so the other can write a small letter to their loved one. My parents really are amazing! We all look at them like the children that we used to be and I ask ''What are we going to do now?''
''We fight!'' Samuel and Nina saysat the same time.
My father give them a big smile ''Well let's make a plan then!''
I find it hard to believe how we could do this. I look at my neighboors and my parents, what a weird bunch we make. But I feel like we can do it. I don't know how yet, but we will find a way. Three people helped us already and I'm sure there is more!

Primacy Online
Life on Earth was nearly eradicated in World War III, but using alien technology, the Patriarch of the Church of the Resurrection built a new society from the ashes. He created what he called the Constructed Reality MMORPG, Primacy Online, a world so real that the players could not distinguish it from reality. After outlawing wars between the city-states on Earth, he declared that all wars would be fought inside the world of Primacy Online. Thirteen hundred years later, the release of Primacy Online VI: Legacy of Balor signals the beginning of World War IX. Players from Earth's city-states will be locked in cryogenic capsules and play Primacy Online in War Mode. Their achievements in the game will determine the victory rankings of their city-states, but if they die in the game, they will die for real. Patrick Armagh found flaws in the game mechanics of Primacy Online and exploited them to rise to the peak of the game. But when the Church declared he was cheating, he was perma-banned from the game. Now, the Church has declared that Patrick and all the other perma-banned cheaters will be included in a special Church group for World War IX, where they can earn redemption for their sin of cheating. However, Morgan Danan, Speaker of the City of Mann, and the generally acknowledged number one player of Primacy Online, has a deal for Patrick. With her help and his method of cheating, he has the chance to become a virtual god within Primacy Online, but by taking up her offer, he will become an enemy of the Church. Like a significant percentage of Primacy Online players, Patrick suffers from an ultimately fatal, degenerative nervous system disorder. He has less than five years to live. With death staring him in the face and nothing to live for, he accepts Morgan Danan's offer, and once again, enters Primacy Online as Crom Cruach, a disgraced legend. Will Crom Cruach, once again, become a legend, or will he be destroyed by the Church? What secrets has the Church hidden inside the game?
