《How a Skeleton Became The Ruler Of The World》Chapter 5 - Slaves

When they arrived at the inn, they took a room for two days, including meals. They paid 15 bronze coins for it. When it got dark, they went out the back door of the inn so no one would see them. They ran through the streets towards the town hall, which was connected to the small palace where the mayor lived. There were several guards standing in front of the town hall, and now and then they went out to do their rounds. Alex and Lucifer slipped between the guards and ran towards the palace.
Alex was not petty, but the change into a skeleton and the desire to have his subordinates respect him made him want to kill that official on the spot, along with all the people who were there. He decided to kill the mayor and reborn him as an undead, so that he would have almost absolute power.
When they entered the palace, there were only a few bodyguards who were not very well trained, they easily entered through the balcony on the second floor, they slowly walked through and checked the rooms to find the one where the mayor himself was sleeping. Finally, they managed to find the room where the mayor was sleeping. They went inside quietly. Lucifer took out his sword, went up to the bed and pierced the mayor’s heart so that he didn’t even have time to open his eyes before dying. “[Rise undead]” he muttered in thought and a black liquid flew out of his hand, covering the man’s body.
After a moment, the man knelt down and wanted to say something, but Alex said mentally, “Shh, though to the room there we will talk,” he said and they went to the Mayor’s office.
“I created you to pretend to be the mayor of this city, make them believe that you are the mayor, besides I have a request that you arrest and sentence to death the clerk who had an argument with a young boy yesterday and sack everyone who was in the office at that time but did not react,” he said.
“Of course, my Lord, your requests are orders. I will do my best,” he replied, bowing.
“Alright now go back to your wife to bed and I hope to hear good news tomorrow morning,” he said, and they left the mayor’s room and quietly returned to the inn.

The next morning, the guard rushed into the office and took away the clerk and those who had worked the shift that day. People didn’t know what was going on at first, but some made the association that yesterday a young man on his way out said that this clerk would be arrested the next day. “I wonder who that young man was?” asked a man in the crowd of another. “Probably someone from a large noble family,” replied someone in the crowd.
They took away the officials and the assistant mayor announced that the official would be executed in the main square the next day. When Alex heard this, he was pleased with how his servant had done, so he decided to go and buy an apartment again today. As they walked down the street, many people looked at him, “Apparently the rumor has already spread,” he thought, shaking his head. After a few minutes, they reached the office when a man standing at the front desk saw him walk in, until sweat ran down the back of his neck. Alex walked up to the registration desk and everyone was looking at him to see what he would say or do, they were convinced that he was going to brag about what power he had or intimidate other officials, but they were wrong.
“Good morning. I came to buy an apartment. Are you able to help me choose something and deal with the formalities?” asked Alex politely, as if nothing happened yesterday. People could not believe that someone with such power could be so polite and tactful. Some even thought the rumor was false.
“Hello customer, we have some houses for sale today. Could I ask what size you would be interested in or what price you are looking for an apartment up to?” he asked
“I am not familiar with housing prices. I am new to this city. Could you tell me what is the cheapest and most expensive house.” replied
“Of course, the cheapest is at 80 silver coins and the most expensive villa is at 300 gold coins,” he said, swallowing his throat when he mentioned 300 gold coins.
“hmm, I can see that the money I have is quite a good property. In any, case you can go a little, crazy,” he thought and said. “Then I would like to look at the apartment for 300 gold coins here please,” handing the bag of gold coins to the clerk.

The clerk looked at it and was horrified that someone could carry so much money, took the money, put it on the scales and then called an assistant to prepare the documents needed to sell the house and they left, heading for the city center. After a few minutes, they came to an enormous villa surrounded by a high wall so that it was impossible to see what was inside. When they went inside, the plot of land was big and there were ponds, a place to exercise, a garden and in the middle there was a gigantic building with two floors and a size at least twice as big as the mayor’s palace. Alex was happy with his purchase. He looked around inside and everything was as it should be. It couldn’t compare to his living in the tomb, but it could be.
“Alright, I take it,” he said and turned to go back to the office. When they returned, the officials gathered to look at the young man who was buying the house they thought could not be sold. Alex signed the relevant documents, took the key and the deed and left, leaving ten gold coins with the guy who served him. The boy could not believe what had happened, not only did he not lose his job, but he made money for which he would have worked for several years and sold an impossible house to sell. Alex then went to a workshop where it was possible to buy carriages.
He bought two normal and two richly decorated carriages, spending about four gold coins, then took one carriage and headed for the slave market. When they arrived, they saw from the entrance many cages with five to ten slaves in each, they were treated in a bad way. All of them were dirty, emaciated, and some were even mutilated. Although Alex had nothing against slavery, he still thought that they should be treated with some respect as intelligent people. This made him wrinkle his eyebrows and rush his horses. When he arrived to the place where the staff was standing, people got out of the carriage and started to watch, because it was the first time they saw such a richly decorated carriage and a young man got out of it. Alex was already used to this kind of looks.
Seconds later, a man approached him with a smile on his face. “Good morning dearest customer, what goods are you looking for?” he asked, licking his lips excitedly. “Hello, you mean what people am I looking for?” he corrected him and the sales agent just nodded and knew what Alex meant. “Go call the owner and tell him that a big buyer has arrived and wants to negotiate with him personally,” he said with a confident expression on his face.
“My Lord, may I ask what you want to negotiate?” he asked with a skeptical look.
“He wants to buy everything,” he said
“Everything?” he asked.
“Yes, then you better run for the owner,” he said, rushing him.
He ran to the building, and after a while came out with the owner. The landlord was aware of the gossip and knew that he should not insult the young man. He walked up and greeted him.
“Dear Sir I heard that you want to buy all the slaves, but then we won’t be able to function and we will lose our regular customers,”
“Of course I understand that, but I wanted to buy your company along with the slaves and not the slaves themselves,” he said and added. “Tell me how much all the slaves are worth at this point and I will give you the price I am willing to give for your business.”
The older man tried to hide his surprise but let it show anyway, than estimated and said. “Slaves are worth about a hundred gold coins my lord,” he replied, adding some value.
“Hmm alright I will give you three hundred gold coins, I think that should be enough,” he said, pulling out the money.
“Deal.” he shook Alex’s hand and went to get the papers to sign the sales contract.
Thanks to that, he could firstly take what slaves he wanted to his mansion, secondly he could learn more about other races and kill some and turn them into his undead, if they had skills that he wanted.
