《The Thing (Because its basically only the draft)》Chapter 8 - Smart Rabbits

We reached something, which could be called a small grove. It was hidden behind the bushes and I needed to crouch to enter the barely visible hole.

The faint evening light was shining through the trees and gave a warm, comfortable feeling to that place.

Inside I found three other rabbits. To be more precise one horned rabbit, same size as the one I followed, and two smaller ones with no horns.

The rabbit which I feed with berries approached the other one. They pressed their horns together. Am I really watching lovey-dovey rabbits right now? I assume those smaller ones are their kids. Oi.. don’t do that infront of the children! I guess that thing isn’t the same for

animals huh.

After they did.. whatever they did, the rabbit which lead me here stared at me again. After getting kinda used to that stare, I casually dropped my bag and took out all berries I had. I spread them out on the dimly lit grass.

The kids hopped to the berries and immediately start to eat. I was quite surprised. Not because they seemed to be hungry, maybe even starving but because the fact they hopped normal to the berries and ate also in a normal pace. I was able to see every movement they make clearly, means like I would watch a normal bunny do that stuff.

I remembered once again how the horned rabbit acted. It was quite fast and ate in the same pace. And well, it has a horn which it can use as a weapon? Maybe there is more behind it, then I think there is. I guess a connection to their abilities or its a sign that those horned rabbits could be an evolved form of the the small bunnies.

Monster can also level up, in games at least, and sometimes they evolve after reaching a certain level and change the appearance too. Its called Rank Up. The player has a similar thing with the jobs he could take. For example you would have to become an Apprentice Swordsman before you become an actual Swordsman and etc.

Hm.. I wonder if there is a job system like that too, those japanese other worlds novels are mostly based of MMOs, many also from the same type but not all of them share the same game-setting they ripped from the actual games. Also most people don’t even bother much with the game-like part of the world, they take it as a given. People are interested more into the fantasy part.

So it's reasonable to use monster evolution as an explanation to show many different monster types in the fantasy world. It’s better than saying, there are all monsters and all are different. Because its sounds more logical and scientific, and well its makes the fantasy setting even more interesting, if it has also a pretty good explanation.

While I was watching over the small bunnies eating their berries, I unconsciously started to pat them. The horned were staring me for a while, but eventually when I also patted them, they just showed a somewhat relaxed expression.

I patted both of the horned rabbits, with both hand. My gauntlet on the head of the rabbit which brought me here, to mostlike give his family food and the other one had my hand on its neck. Naturally, since I didn’t pick them up and looked especially for it, I have no idea which is the male or female. Well not that it matters anyway.

I immediately grabbed the horn of the rabbit with my gauntlet and pressed it down, it couldn’t move anymore, at the same time I twisted the neck of the other one with my bare hand, I found the spot which would be called “pressure point” or I think it's that. Basically if you want to knock out someone, make him faint, you can do it by hitting the “pressure point” of the neck with the side of your hand. I think that thing was called martial arts or something.

Anyway, I wondered why it was possible to make someone faint with that technique and found out that this exact spot is a connection of some blood arteries which can lead to death if you hit them. Well not really, later it was found out, that it's most likely a good spot to hit and cause a lack of oxygen, which can kill too I guess.

Anyway, the reaction was surprisingly what I wanted, it started to breath weird and stopped its movements, then I only had to twist its neck a bit and it was dead. My hand was hurting the whole time during that process.

Incidentally, that's also the reason why I’m doing this now. Rabbits which are cute, and have a family and such. Well, I understand it wanted to help its family and wanted to survive. However I’m unforgiving scum, who thinks only about satisfying his rage.

Basically it's something I noticed, while I was still following the horned rabbit in the forest. My hand started to hurt a bit. The left hand, which was pierced by the horn earlier. The small red dot which the rabbit created was still red, it doesn't seem to heal at all.

Doesn't something like that happen if something gets inside your hand, which doesn't belong there at all? Like some small wood splitter, pointy shaving when you saw wood or sometimes poison ivy which burns for an annoying long time. Something like poison, and the body reacts according to it with pain or a red spot, which only disappears when you put the lotion on it.

I remembered my first kill. The first goblin. A horned rabbit rammed its horn in the back of it, it used it as a weapon. After that I killed the goblin which was screaming extremely loud for some reason. Was it maybe screaming, because the rabbit inserted something with the horn or because the horn itself is poisoned?

I thought that the rabbit could use the horn as a weapon, and because it only weakly pierced me with it, I assumed that it's something like, a test if it could trust me or something. Guess I thought about a novel at that time or something, where a legendary beast, a bird to be precise, gave the protagonist a blessing by picking on his eye. This world is like one of the other world stories, but I don’t know which one would have the closest resemblance. I should have been more careful.

But after my hand started to hurt, I came to a conclusion. That rabbit poisoned me, it saw me as an enemy and on top of it, it wanted to exploit me after I was in a somewhat weak state, because the whole hysteria thing with the goblins. Perhaps it observed me and my actions, and planned what it's going to do, now that the goblins were dead. The goblins seemingly wanted to hunt them after all, that’s why they had those berries I think. If that is really true, then that shitty rabbit would be pretty sly.

Well I can’t tell if its really the one, who rammed the first goblin with its horn, they look all the same after all but a positive point, why it's good that they’re all the same. They should be able to die in the same way too, they are easy to kill with the same trick.

I grabbed the rabbit on its horn and instead of pushing it down, I lifted it up. It seems I was indeed stronger then before, or the rabbit was pretty light.

As expected it couldn’t move, no matter how hard it was struggling. The horn should be most like connected to its ability to be extraordinary fast. I wonder how rare those horned rabbits are, many other world stories use actually the horned rabbits or the uncatchable rabbits as a common hunting prey or a rare beast with a high bounty. So I get cash for it.

I used the horn as the handle of a hammer and well hammered a bit on the grass floor with the guy who wanted to cause me pain, the rabbit stopped to move soon. To be sure I also twisted its neck.

The small rabbits were managed to move away for quite a distance, I guess after killing one, they already knew what I was going to do and started their escape. Man those rabbits are somewhat smart, even smarter than the goblins I think

Naturally it was easy to catch them, doesn't matter how intelligent they are, if their bodies are still weak and slow, they are easy prey, and thus I killed them with the same technique again. No ugly blood puddles or certain flesh parts which I have to deal with, great. The latter is going to turn out to be a lie though. I should be able to sell them as they are now, the butcher will do the more “fleshy” stuff I guess. So I won’t need to cut out certain organs and such.

I put the four bodies in my bag and moved out of the grove. It was under the moon lit.
