《Road》Chapter 10

After breakfast, Jade and I persuaded the rest to come with us to Undead Dungeon and went there. We got inside and looked around. There were zombies, but not much. 'Tori must have lowered their numbers a lot.' There were only forty-three zombies so my party managed to kill them all easily.
Your Group Defeated Zombie * 43
Tori Gained 4300/5 = 860 Experience.
Others tried to get out after this, but we stopped them saying we should check for the boss first. So we found it scowling to a depression on the ground. I boosted everyone again, and they started to fight.
They started by dispersing again, Giant too, as before shouted towards Jade, who shrugged the attack. Before Jade reached the Giant, Wan was there. Every time he attacked the Giant, it paused momentarily, glowed then gave out the same smoke it gave when I hit it with my spell. Seeing this, Wan climbed on its neck and started hitting the Giant there. Since Giant couldn't move, the team easily killed it.
Your Group Defeated Zombie Giant
Tori Gained 2000/5 = 400 Experience.
I looked at the loot and smiled. While I was looking, others made their way towards me and started looking at me with expectation in their eyes. I turned to Elan and took out a staff. It was called the Staff of Renewal. She took it slowly from me and started inspecting. She then flinched slightly and gave it back to me. "You should look at the description first." I nodded and imbued some holy light on it, then looked."
Staff of Renewal
Durability 2999/3000
Enchantment: Focus
Spells used with this staff as a focus has 15% lower mana requirement.
Enchantment: Renewal
Holder of this staff regenerate MP 15% faster.
Enchantment: Holy Light
Enchantment Attack: 33.6 Light Damage Against Evil
Enchantment Charge: 1
I relayed the information to others and gave staff to Elan. She shook her head. “I don't need this. My staff is better.”
Jade nodded. “Then we will sell it.” She turned to me. “What about the class?”
I took out the paper. It was called Earth Mage. I didn't even read it since I was not interested in it and gave it to Jade who skimmed and passed it to Wan. After everybody finished reading the paper and got out, except me and Jade. She looked at me. "Will you leave your summon again?"
I grinned. "There is no way I will pass free experience and loot." She smiled and nodded. She then got outside. Seeing her departure, I summoned the skeleton and gave it the sword I was charging since the morning. It held the way I commanded it to and looked at me with its empty eyes. Then I opened perks and put all four points to Intelligence. Now you may think me as an idiot since I don't give it some firepower, but I was curious about how smart they can get and the best way for me to find out was to try, so I did. After I gave the same command as before, I got outside too. When I was out, there was no one so I shrugged and made my way to the inn.

When I reached the inn, I saw only Jade sitting on a chair, thinking something. She looked up when she saw me and smiled. I smiled back and said “Hello.”
“Hi.”
I pointedly looked around. “Where are the others?”
She shook her head. “They went to sell the Staff boss dropped. I remained here to see you.”
“Oh. Is there something you want to say to me?”
She nodded and leaned forward a little. “You can use every monster you caught right?” I nodded. “I need your help.”
I was surprised. “What do you need?”
“You remember how we first met right?” I nodded. “I was culling the numbers of wolves for a quest.”
I nodded. “Okay. What do you mean to say?”
“I want you to summon a wolf to cull their numbers instead. This should free up some adventurers for them to relocate to villages which should protect them against bandits.”
I smiled. “I will if I can. You can be sure about that.”
She smiled and stood up. "Let's go kill some wolves then."
I nodded. “What tier are they?”
“They are only Tier 1 and Level 2. We should be able to help your wolf get strong enough for it to deal with other wolves.”
I nodded again and followed Jade to the forest. We saw a few slimes after a short while but left them alone. After walking about an hour we finally managed to find a lone wolf. It started growling as soon as it saw us and started running towards me. I quickly started chanting, then hit it before it can get into range. It stopped in its tracks, shone, and whined. It curled into itself, smokes coming all the while. After a few long seconds, it stopped moving.
Seeing what happened I couldn't understand the way the spell works. Surely a wolf shouldn't be evil right? I told as much to Jade. She shrugged and said “It might have harmed it because it was trying to attack you. I don't know, maybe what evil means your enemy. Never mind that. Did you get it?”
Defeated Wolfer Level 2
Gained 10 EXP
Monster Breeder Skill Activated
You can now summon Wolfer Level 1
Monster Breeder Skill Activated
You caught a new Tier 1 monster. Vit and Int increased by 1
Enlightened Perk Activated
Soul increased by 2
I nodded and summoned my wolf. I named him Forlan then opened the perk menu. There were all kinds of perks but I picked this.
[Perk] Monster Toughness 1/100
Gives 10 armor to monster and increases their vitality by 10.
Then in a few minutes, we found another wolf. I send Forlan this time and watched him dominate his opponent.
Defeated Wolfer Level 2
Gained 20 EXP
After the last fight, I stopped Jade and shook my head. “This is not good enough. Now we can either leave Forlan here to attack them or leave him to undead dungeon with Tori.
She put her hand on her chin. "You are right. Let's leave him with Tori. Let's go." I nodded and started following her again.

I was at the inn since we left the wolf to Undead Dungeon. While I was reading my monster book, trying to memorize parts, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up smiling, expecting Wan, but it wasn't. That was some other guy I don't know about. Noticing this, I lost my smile and looked at him seriously. "Hello, bookworm. How are you?" He said cockily.
I slowly took his hand out of my shoulder. “Fine. What do you want?”
He grinned at me. "Nothing I can't take." He then took my book and walked away to a different table. Seeing how he dismissed me, I saw red and started chanting. Right when I was about to finish, someone held my hand, and spell splashed at them harmlessly.
It was Alane. “You don't want to kill him right?”
I was shocked by the question. “He wouldn't die. He is probably a high leveled person.”
She shook her head. “If he was high tiered, he wouldn't need your book. Do you have a weaker spell you can hit him with?” I shook my head. “Let me deal with him then.” She said then headed to the thief's table.
He noticed her approach and stood up. “You don't want to act like a hero rig- Ugh.” He got a punch to the belly for his trouble and found himself outside.
Alane came to me with the book. "Here. You should learn defensive spells if you don't want these kinds of idiots to come after you."
I nodded thoughtfully then shook my head. “I don't know where can I buy spells.”
She pointed to the book now sitting on my table. “You can find some at the book shop. They are expensive though.”
“How expensive?”
“A kind of spell you need should worth around 10 to 12 small gold.”
I whistled. “Isn't that too much?”
Alane smiled. “No. Money is easy to find for adventurers so the things they have to buy are naturally expensive.”
I nodded then raised my cup filled with water. “Then cheers to future grinds.”
Alane chuckled and went to her work. Then I put the cup down and continued my reading.
While reading, I saw someone approach me. I looked up and saw Jade. She smiled at me. “How is it going?”
I sighed. “I had some trouble with someone but I am otherwise fine.”
She sat down to a chair and turned to me. “What happened?”
I pointed at the book. “Someone tried to steal the book. I nearly killed him if it wasn't for Alane. She stopped me. She then dealt with him herself and kicked him out.”
Jade nodded. "So that was him... I think Alane handled it well. It's better that it didn't turn to bloodshed."
I nodded. “You are right. So, what did you do?”
She absently touched the handle of her sword. “I went to look for a spell I can use and maintain.”
“Maintain? What do you mean?”
She pointed to her sword. "I was looking for a burning sword spell. It burns the blade of the sword, improving its damage. It uses users mana as fuel so.."
I nodded. “I think its a good choice. It should stack with my imbue skill.”
She nodded and looked around. "Did you see others?" I shook head. "They should have come already. Let's look for them." She stood up and walked towards the door and I followed.
When we got out of the inn, I saw the thief. He was sleeping peacefully. My instincts told me to take away his peace but I just shook my head and continued walking. We walked between buildings toward the center of the city. After walking for a few minutes we were in front of a building with the sign called Anything General Merchant. We get in and saw a woman behind the counter.
She saw our approach and said. “Welcome to Anything Merchant. I am Rosio. How can I help you?”
Jade took a step forward. “We are looking for our friends. They were supposed to come here to sell a staff.”
Rosio nodded. “That, you mean staff of recovery right?”
I shook my head. "It was The Staff of Renewal."
Rosio nodded again. "They sold the staff to me. While they are here, a guardsman came and told them that rest of their team were in trouble."
Jade and I looked at each other. Jade turned to the woman. “Do you know where they are?”
Rosio took out a paper and gave it to Jade. “Here. This is the place guard told them.”
Jade read the paper and crumbled it. "Trap." She turned to me. "We have to hurry or they might do something to bad them." I nodded and we ran out of the shop. After we ran for a while through the city, Jade stopped at a remote part of it. We carefully walked while looking around for any kind of ambush but there wasn't anything obvious. After a while, I started to hear voices. It was like the sound of metal. Understanding what is happening I stopped Jade and directed us towards the voices. After running for a half a minute or so, we found the source of the voices. It was Wan, fighting against two people. They were like him, using daggers. Seeing them, Jade charged them silently and I started to whisper my spells chant. As soon as it finished, spell hit one of the figures and they shone. Then their body started giving steam but it didn't stop there. The figure started to scream while taking out of their hooded robe and other clothes. What I saw, what we all saw, including their friend, stopped us on our tracks.
The skin of the figure I hit, before our eyes, started to melt and after a few seconds all skin disappeared, just like that, I killed a person for the first time. The screen before my eyes wasn't a pleasant surprise this time but a reminder.

The Girl from the Mountain
Alexandra Bedford is a weapon, a young woman with telekinetic powers capable of leveling entire cities, born to fight in the desolate remains of post-apocalyptic North America. There is only one problem: she may be losing control of her abilities. Sixteen years after a global pandemic devastated the earth’s population, the lines in the old United States have been drawn between the Cheyenne Directorate in Colorado and the New England Alliance on the East Coast. The Directorate, of which Alexandra is a part, is a small but powerful organization dedicated to returning the country to its former glory. However, when a diplomatic mission to the New England Alliance goes wrong, Alexandra finds herself at the center of a bloody civil war. Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!

Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.
