《Road》Chapter 2

We reached the city in a few minutes. While we are walking, I looked around to find slimes but I couldn't. So I was still with five coppers. We passed the gates together with Jade and went inside. There I stopped for a second and looked around. There was a big road going from the doors where carriages are flowing, seemingly endlessly. On both sides, there were two to three leveled stone buildings. While looking, my eyes picked up an area where people were moving around. At the center a giant statue of a horned horse. "What was it? Pegasus? No, unicorn." Jade noticed that I stopped and she stopped too but instead of looking at me, she looked around. After I finished my inspection I went to her side and we continued walking.
After a few minutes, we were in front of an old building. This building was, unlike most buildings around here, was made of wood. Jade turned away from the door and said "You can afford this place. Make sure to remember the way here since you may not be able to find anybody else to give you directions, well, correct ones." I nodded. She asked, "Do you know about dungeons?"
"I know what they are but I don't know if there is any around here or what's exactly is inside."
She nodded and said, "Follow me." Then she started walking towards a different way than we came. After a while, we reached in front of a cave-like structure with a few guards in front of it. She pointed at the cave. "That is a slime dungeon. You can find as many slimes as you want there. There is no entrance fee but you have to give any item you found there to the guards. You won't gain much but its a great place to grind for money if you are new." I nodded. She then asked, "Do you have any other questions?"
"Where can I exchange mana stones for money?"
"At the adventurers guild." She motioned me to follow and continued talking when I did. "That is our next stop. If you register to the adventurers guild, you can accept quests to do various things. Like killing slimes." She chuckled.
We walked silently for a while. All the time I did my best to memorize the directions we took. After a few minutes, we were in front of a wide, stone building with two levels. Jade got inside and I followed. There wasn't, unlike what I expected, a lot of people. Jade turned to me and said "This is it. Do you have any more questions?"
"How can I learn spells?"
She sighed. "You can't. At least, you can't learn any the way you are. They are both pretty rare and sought after, so you need lots of money to learn even the least useful spell."
I nodded. "I understand, thank you," I said and made my way to the counter. When I got closer to the counter, I looked carefully at the person behind it. What attracted my attention most was his ears. They were long and pointy. I froze for a second, staring at his ears but quickly forced myself to look somewhere else. He had long black hair and green eyes. His height was about the same as mine.

When he saw me approaching, I waved my hand and said "Hello. I would like to register for the guild."
He smirked and said "Would you now? Well, okay. Wait here, I will get the papers." I watched him go while thinking what that answer was about, but ultimately, I couldn't think of anything and just shrugged. After a while, he came back with a paper and a quill, then put them in front of me. He pointed at the paper and said "You need to fill this." I nodded and took the quill. There were simple questions like name, height, class. Fortunately, they didn't want skills or perks. If they did, I would have to cancel registering. I quickly filled out the form as quickly as I can and gave both quill and form back. "Cost of registering is one petty mana stone."
'That's all the money I have.' I sighed. Took out the mana stone and gave it to him. 'Well, I can always gain more.' After its done, I was given an adventurer card. He then pointed at the card "I know your name now. They call me Hisako."
I nodded and started going towards the wall with what I guessed to hold the quests. As soon as I took the first step, I heard a voice. I turned around, it was Hisako. He said "You can't take any quests until you exchange at least a hundred petty mana stone. You know where to find them right?" I nodded. "Good." He said and sat on his chair looking at nothing.
I sighed and shook my head. 'Hundred slimes. Here I come, the slime hunter. Dun dun dun dun.' I chuckled to myself and went outside.
I headed to the slime dungeon Jade showed me and reached there in a few minutes. There were the same guards as before. When I got closer, one of them said "Hold!" I did. He came closer. "Are you here to grind slimes?"
"Yes. I am hoping to gain some mana stones."
He nodded. "You know the rule right?"
"I have to give the items I found inside to you, right? Except mana stones, I am guessing."
He nodded. "You got it right. There is no one inside. You can get in." I nodded and went inside.
After walking for a few seconds inside the cave, I arrived in front of a giant stone door. I slowly touched it and there was a screen in front of me.

Say 'Join' to get inside.
"Join," I said and suddenly the screen started to shine and as suddenly it started, it ended with darkness. I thought it was the same void when I saw when I died but that was not the case. I noticed this when something tried to engulf my leg. I kicked it as strong as possible and heard a 'plop'.

I quickly followed the voice and stomped on the thing. Again and again. After the fifth time, a screen showed up.

"Phew. This darkness will be a problem." I waited for any sound but there didn't seem to be any other slime. I leaned down and found the mana stone. I put it in my pocket, then turned back to get out. I went a few steps and my hand pressed something hard. First I thought it was the door but there wasn't any screen showing up. "Damn that guard. He should have told me." I turned around and put my right hand on the wall. Then I started walking straight forward. I planned to approach this problem like a maze. Though of course, since I didn't know anything about this dungeon I kept my ears open for any voice. I didn't walk long until there was another slime.
This one too, like its brethren, tried to engulf my leg but failed miserably. I quickly stomped it too and took its mana stone. I continued like that a few dozen steps without any resistance and finally touched the gate. It told me to say 'escape' so I did. “Escape.” After another light show, I was out. When I was outside, one of the guards looked at me quizzically.
He came to me and said “What happened? Is there a problem?”
I shook my head. “I forgot to bring torches.”
He relaxed. “I thought a boss was spawned.” He shook his head. “Anyway. Do you know where to get torches?”
I sighed. "No. This is my first time here." He nodded and gave me directions for an alchemist. I thanked and took off. I walked a few blocks towards the center of the city and saw the sign saying 'Everything Alchemist'. I went inside, the doorbell chimed and someone with green tangled hair looked up from the counter. I made my way to the counter, smiled, and said "Hello."
The person I thought was a she nodded. “Welcome to Everything Alchemist. How can I help you?”
“I need a torch for the dungeon.”
She nodded. "You want everlasting torch. They are two petty mana stones." I nodded and she ducked behind the counter. She then took out a torch. She said something in a language I didn't know and the torch started burning. I put the mana stones to the counter and took the torch. It was bright but wasn't hot for some reason. I turned around and was about to go out when I heard Alchemist's voice. "Hey." I turned towards her. "Don't carry it around. You will burn something." I looked at her questioningly, not knowing what to do. She tried to run her hand on her hair and made a pulling motion. "Just put it in your inventory, idiot!"
'I have an inventory. Of course.' "Inventory." A blue screen opened, showing about a hundred empty boxes and two filled boxes. There were ten petty mana stones and a book. I put the torch inside and turned to Alchemist who nodded then went outside. I looked at the sky and it was still noon. So I passed between people as fast as possible and managed to reach the dungeon in a few minutes. I nodded at the guard and got inside. After the entry ceremony, I was again inside the darkness of the dungeon.
I took out the torch and watched as darkness disappear. I was in a room with stone walls. There was a torch holder at one of the walls and two slimes moving around. I put the torch on the torch holder and went after the slimes. I took them both by stomping and collected the stones.

'This makes me think... Why didn't I get a level two summon?' I opened my status screen and focused on the Monster Breeder Skill.
Monster Breeder Skill 1/25

Let's you summon a caught monster for 50 MP.

This skill will evolve at higher levels.
'Well, damn. It says it catches unique monsters. Meaning no duplicates. Let's find a lone slime and grind this skill.' I took back the torch from the wall and moved further inside the dungeon. I walked about a minute when I finally found another slime. I went towards it and stomped on it a few times, leaving only a little health. Then I summoned my slime. 'This is the moment. I hope it attacks rather than moving around aimlessly.' My worries were without basis since my slime directly went for the kill, meaning it engulfed the other slime. I watched every moment. Before my eyes, enemy slime dissolved and my slime got bigger.

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course.
