《The Adventures of Hood (& Hy-Jinx): Part 2 - The Legacy of Pomegranite》Chapter 17: Insight
Advertisement
Now, Hy-Jinx has had this mask placed upon her before, in the bell tower after she had been mortally wounded by an ice missile fired at her by one of the butt-naked tattooed barbarian sorcerers. The mask had at that time had a healing spell placed on it, a healing spell specifically placed on it by Hood, as a means of keeping Madeleine alive and breathing - a slow but constant drain on Hood’s magical resources. It should come as no surprise then that, since the apparent demise of Madeleine, Hood has removed this enchantment as a means of claiming back some of his energetic expenditure. Clearly, however, there is more to the mask than simply just this: the strange undulating dark threads, the recent monstrous mud pile, being cases in point, and, moreover, it appears to be part of some wider collective to which we may refer, using our awareness at least, to Madame Masque and Masqued Maerin. But this is all by the by, and what is currently worrying Hy-Jinx, sitting now as she is in total darkness on a stone cold bench, with wet water seeping into the seat of her already damp britches, aware that there are seven people in the immediate vicinity who are wishing to, at the very least arrest her, what is worrying Hy-Jinx is that nothing is happening.
“Err,” she says aloud partially to herself, but partially in hope that the mask is…is listening? “If you’re going to do something, it might be a good idea to do it around about now.”
“Are you talking to us?” comes an aggressive voice from a guardswoman who must be, judging by her voice’s direction, volume and clarity, approximately twelve feet and closing, off to Hy-Jinx’s left.
“They definitely seemed to suggest this course of action,” Hy-Jinx says to herself, trying to reassure herself as to the validity of the decision she has made in removing her glasses and placing on the mask. And just at this point, for some unknown reason, a memory of Madeleine standing at the side of the underground canal, having just alighted from Madame Masque’s boat comes to Hy-Jinx’s mind. A memory of a strange cat like shudder that ripple ran through Madeleine’s body. Perhaps it is the simple act of sitting waiting for the Mask to do something that has caused the memory to arise, for Hy-Jinx was waiting at the time for Madeleine to give orders, and she remembers distinctly that strange spasm which caused a change in Madeleine’s persona and body language. And in recalling this memory Hy-Jinx suddenly realises what to do, or more correctly, what not to do. Sitting thus, Hy-Jinx lets go of Hy-Jinx, feels her awareness sink into her body and a ripple of something that she can only describe as fire spreads up her spine and out into her whole skeletal structure.

Many Minded
Synopsis: Issa Pyxis, Spacer orphan and illegal heretic, graduated from living on the streets to running with a gang years ago, but now it looks like that’s all going to change. Her inheritance, more specifically who—or what—she is, is catching up with her, and on a planet with the Emperor’s inquisitors slinking around in every shadow, nowhere is safe and no one can be trusted. What will she do? A cyberpunk story about identity, loneliness, covert infiltration, evil dystopias, and much more! Features: - Cyborgs and cyberpunk galore - This is indented to be somewhat “rational” and “hard” Sci-Fi story - Original Fiction however parts of my worldbuilding are inspired by other Sci-Fi stories (duh) Rationale: The future is cool, AIs are kickass, and questions about consciousness are simultaneously existential and yet unanswered. To me, this story is a vehicle for exploring these topics, and also, I wanted to write a story where the protagonist was unafraid of themselves and where their self is more like a git-repo than a meat computer. Disclaimer: This story primarily takes place in what we’d describe as a “cyberpunk dystopia” with some extra technocracy, autocracy, and religious fervor thrown into the mix, so there will be some “grittiness” in this story. Caveat emptor. Also, [insert your favorite boilerplate “views expressed” disclaimer here]. I shouldn’t need to say this, but the main character and other characters in my story can be wrong on occasion (gasp!) and the way they view the world isn’t always objective truth (if such a thing even exists) nor do their views and opinions necessarily reflect the views of me, the author. MARKIS
It’s the year 2034, in almost two decades there was a scientific breakthrough enough to shake the world, it was to simulate a world so real, you could mistake it for real life. The first ever application of this proprietary technology, known as NR, was for the first ever, NR-RPG game, MARKIS. After almost 25,000 people had logged on, it was then known that they wouldn’t be able to exit out of the game. Essentially trapping them inside. Removing the headset will mean death. It was then that Miyamoto Takezo, the creator of MARKIS and the NR technology showed himself in front of them. He said “If you want to get back to your once happy and loved life, then you will need to finish this game. You who surpass all will be the ones to free the rest. For that is the mission that I have given you. Survive, survive and reach newer heights, reached by no one else.” This is the story of a boy and his friend, as they struggle through this world all to get back to their real lives.
