《Wide Thunder》Chapter 0.9

Amanda was used to morning patrol being boring and a waste of time eight times out of ten. Her first couple of patrols as a newly reinstated hero thoroughly changed her viewpoint about morning patrols. If it weren't for the amount of gunfire she now dealt with on a daily basis she would've still believed she was being paid far too much. Gunfire she now hoped to find the source of; after beating and interrogating countless armed thugs she finally managed to get some to tell her were the weapons were coming from. If the information she recieved was right then the warehouse doors she stood in front of would lead her to the source: a villian who called himself Vermin.
Amanda walked up to the warehouse doors, opened up a hidden panel, and typed in the secret code. The ground in front of the warehouse doors opened up, and revealed a flight of stairs that should lead to an underground base. Without hesitation Amanda began walking down the flight of stairs. Which to her suprise went much further down then she expected. The stairs continued down for almost fifteen minutes, and when she reached the bottom she was greeted by two armed guards. Before the guards could react, Amanda fired a bolt of lightning at both guards. Mere seconds later a third guard stuck his head into the room.
"Was that thunder I just heard?"
Before this third guard could react Amanda fired another bolt of lightning from her hand. From beyond the door Amanda could hear the sound of guards readying their guns.
"Whoever you are come out with your hands raised NOW!"
Amanda looked at the metal door in front of her, then looked around her at the metal walls of the underground base. Amanda created an orb of lightning in her hand, and flung it into the hallway full of guards.
"What the hell is tha- Ahhh!"
Once the hallway was silent Amanda walked through, careful not to step on any of the unconscious guards. As she made her way through the facility she discovered that they had far more than just guns down here. There were poisons, bombs, drugs, and all other sorts of dangerous items. Amanda had never seen so many weapons in one place, the thought that some villian could amass this much without anyone noticing was concerning. It made Amanda wonder what would happen if this continued uninterrupted. She didn't believe that this operation would just stick to selling local thugs a couple of weapons, And she intended to stop it all here today.

The next door Amanda entered was unlike all the other rooms before, it was an office. There was only one individual in the sparsely furnished room, a blonde haired man wearing a white suit. In the man's hands was a brown rat.
"Could you shut the door please? My friend here finds the light quite bothersome."
Finding no reason to leave it open Amanda shut the door behind her.
"So you must be 'Vermin' right?"
"Of course. Why else would I be petting such a beautiful specimen. But before we continue please take a seat."
Amanda gave a pensive glance to the man's offered seat. The chair barely looked capable of holding a child's weight, much less her own.
"I'd rather stand."
"Delightful! You must have found your way here by interrogating some loose lipped goon, yes?"
Against her better judgement Amanda nodded in the affirmative to the man's question.
"Wonderful! Now I imagine you have no intention of letting me leave as a free man? Good, because I have no intention of letting you leave alive."
Hundreds of glowing red eyes appeared behind Vermin as he stood from his chair. The red eyes lept from the shadows towards Amanda, revealing that each pair belonged to a rat. Bolts of lightning shot forth from Amanda's frame, each colliding with a rat and subsequently frying it. Vermin stared at the fried rats with a frown on his face, then with a snap of his fingers the rat corpses grew in size and stood back up. The newly raised and larger rats threw themselves at Amanda with reckless abandon, only to once again be struck down and raised from the dead. Gradually Amanda had to put more concentration and power into each bolt. The rats managed to get closer with every second longer it took for Amanda to strike one down.
Before the endless tide of rats could reach Amanda she opened the door behind her, and fled from the room. Vermin watched as she left his office with a suprising amount of speed and agility for her size. With a casual stride he followed her out into the hall; as he stepped into the hallway he spotted her turning into another room. With a bit more haste in his steps he went after the running hero. Much to chagrin he could not catch Amanda no matter how fast he ran. As soon as he entered a room she left as soon as he caught a glance of her. The chase finally came to an end as he entered the largest room in the base. Amanda stood in the center of the room staring with a smug smile at Vermin who was heaving for breath.

"*Huff* has *Huff* our game *Huff* cat and mouse *Huff* finally come to an end?"
Before Amanda could answer his question the tide of massive rats began charging towards her. Like before bolts of lightning originating from Amanda struck the rats. Unlike before the rats were vaporized upon coming in contact with the lightning. The horde of rats grew smaller and smaller until eventually not a single one remained. Just as Amanda was about to proclaim her victory a rat as large as a bus burst into the room. With inhuman speed the rat lunged towards Amanda with its teeth bared.
Amanda stared into the rats maw as it's teeth grew closer by the milisecond. Right before it could colide with her, Amanda turned into lightning. She flew out of the gigantic rat's path, and turned back to normal next to Vermin. The sound of her returning to normal was like thunder, it knocked Vermin to the ground. Who for a small moment couldn't hear anything save for the thoughts in his head. In the next moment Amanda fired a bolt of lightning from her hand at the downed villian. It knocked him unconscious, and the bus sized rat collapsed the moment he was zapped uncinscious.
Amanda grabbed the knocked out villian by the collar of his suit, and dragged him all the way out of the base. Once back in the city she pulled out her phone and called both H.H.Q and the police. 20 minutes later both groups arrived, immediately heroes and officers flooded down into the base. After every guard had been brought out from the underground base a couple of officers took Vermin away in one of their cars. Amanda's boss who's name she never knew watched the car drive off before he turned to Amanda.
"I knew I was right to hire you on the spot. Damn I'm good, and you deserve a reward."
"Keeping him locked up is reward enough for me... sir."
"Thats noble and all, but I can't let you go unpaid for your hardwork. So please take this."
Amanda's boss pulled a gift card out from his pocket, and placed it in Amanda's hand. Shortly after he walked off, Amanda looked at the card. It was gift card for an all you could eat place, and it paid for three separate nights. Amanda placed the gift card in one of her pockets, and planned to use it as soon as she got the chance.

The Errant Otherworlder Watanabe
“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes and trucks whom transport men to other worlds.” Meet our titular protagonist Haruto Watanabe, a man who has all the markings of a good protagonist for a generic portal fantasy story. As an overworked office worker, to escape from the grips of crippling capitalist alienation, he had taken up to reading many stories where young men like him were transported to other worlds and enjoyed their lives at a most leisurely pace. Armed with genre-awareness and (what he believes to be) a marketable personality which would make him an easy audience self-insert, he longed for the day the isekai express would take him to his long-awaited adventure to another world. When the fateful day came, where the fair yet harsh mistress that is the fabled truck took Watanabe on one last date to the other side, he was most ready to escape his previous life, ready to embark on an errant so great he’d be most overpowered, his heroics so exceptional and his harem so vast that they would barely fit ten or twenty volumes of an overly long novel made by a desperate author looking for quick cash. Lo and behold however, Watanabe instead found himself in a low fantasy world which lacked severely in the department of any game-like systems, cheat skills or easily charmed damsels in distress. In a setting so antithetical to his established genre savviness or any attempts at power fantasy, how will a man like Watanabe, lacking in strength, wits and courage, manage to survive in a land most foreign to him? This is my first time trying to share to the wider world what I’ve written, and I hope you’ll enjoy reading the errantry of Watanabe as much as I enjoy writing about them. I'll be posting one chapter per week on Sundays, along with extra chapters whenever I get the chance to write more than usual.
