《Just Your Average Isekai》Just your average goblin highway robbery

As I walked down the winding dirt path I only thought about one thing: I'm so hungry. I forgot to buy rations in town and I only noticed when I was a day into my walk so I had to turn around. I remember seeing rations in one of the stores in town and thinking oh I should get those for the trip back but I must’ve forgotten. I figured I may as well look at the description and skills for my new job.

Kinda overpowered…
As I stumbled down the dirt road I heard the sound of swords clashing nearby. I snuck towards the sound and just behind a few trees there were two people fighting against a group of goblins. There was one guy and one girl both in leather armour with shabby broadswords fighting five small goblins. Behind the two people was a man in a suit cowering behind a box that seemed to have fallen out of the carriage beside it.
The girl looked to be in her early twenties with dark brown hair and green eyes and the guy had a very similar appearance. The man in the suit was a bit chubby and had black hair swept to the side. The Goblins were very short, only about the size of a toddler and they were wearing brown leather rags. They were a light green colour. Three of the five goblins were carrying rusty knives while the other two had bows.
Suddenly one of the goblins with a knife leaped at the girl and yelled “ag buck niham fhath!” which I understood as “give us your food!” Apparently I could also understand goblins. Their two swords clashed and the girl fell onto her back. Before the goblin could attack her a second time the guy swung his sword at the goblin.

Another one of the goblins with a knife jumped in and blocked the boy's attack. Out of nowhere an arrow fired by one of the goblins flew past the boy's head, startling him. From my point of view the humans had no chance. I looked at the goblins' levels and they were all at least five levels higher than them. They were also a higher level than me but I decided to help anyway, I could probably get some sort of reward for helping them. Maybe we could be diplomatic and talk things out, I thought.
I ran into the battlefield and began to speak the goblin language as best I could “please stop, I believe we can talk this out”. It was very weird and I'm pretty sure I mispronounced some things but they seemed to understand me because the two goblins backed off. One of the goblins with a bow who had a thin red cloth tied around his arm began proudly walking to the front of the group. He Stuck out his chest and cockily said “You can speak our language huh?” “Yes, although my pronunciation is shabby. I would like to resolve this peacefully if possible. What would you like in exchange for leaving quietly?”
“Really? A human resolving something peacefully? That's a first... If you give us one of those containers we will leave you all alone.”
This goblin was being a little bit of an asshole but it's fair, humans must constantly be killing his people. There were about 16 boxes in the back of the carriage so I was sure they'd be fine parting with one. I turned towards the two humans and began to speak “ok, you guys are clearly gonna lose this fight. All they want is one of those boxes and they will leave you alone. Does th-” I was cut off mid sentence by the man in the suit yelling “absolutely not! Daddy will never forgive me if I lose any of this cargo to those filthy goblins!”
As soon as he began yelling the goblins readied their weapons. I gestured to them that it would be okay and they chilled a bit. I turned back to the man in the suit and said “You don’t have a choice, it's either that or you die.” The girl was clearly surprised by this but the guy in leather armour looked almost petrified. I wouldn’t be surprised if the kid pissed his pants on the spot. I pointed towards the man in the suit and said “what's wrong with this idiot?”
“Uh- umm… this is Ro-Rohad Ma-ma-ma-manthony a local noble w-we are adventurers protecting him” the girl responded. Maybe this girl was more scared than I thought considering how much she was stuttering. Adventures huh… I of course had heard the term before but I never really had a conversation with any of them. These people seemed nice enough(excluding fatty over there) so I thought may as well help them out. I walked towards the carriage and reached down to lift one of the boxes.
Of Course before before I could, the noble began rushing towards me, stomping his feet on the ground like a toddler throwing a temper tantrum. Just as I was about to lift one of the boxes out, the noble grabbed me by the collar of my shirt and began yelling in my face “HOW DARE YOU A LOWLY COMMONER DISOBEY ME! YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO TOUCH MY THINGS! GO BACK TO THE STINKHOLE YOU CAME FROM AND BUT OUT OF MY BUSINESS!”

This wasn’t the first time someone power tripping yelled at me so I understood how to properly deal with it. With a relaxed face and a relaxed voice I said “sit down.” I guess he couldn’t hear me because he just kept yelling in my face. At this point I was practically drenched in spit so I had reached then of my rope. I activated my [Intimidate] skill and once again said “sit down” this time a little bit louder and a little bit angrier.
Maybe it wasn’t just a bit louder, I kinda yelled at him. To be honest it was probably a bit overkill but it worked. As soon as I said it his hands released and he fell to the ground. I started to smell something weird coming from him so I looked down. He… pissed himself…. I scared him so badly that I made him pee himself. I looked around to see everyones reactions but it was not what I was expecting.
To be honest I was expecting laughter. I mean, a grown man just peed himself, that's kinda funny is it not? Instead of laughing everyone, even the goblins looked horrified. Ah crap… did I use it on everyone I thought. It didn’t really matter much though. It’s not like I’m here to make friends.
I lifted the box from the carriage and carried it over to the goblin with the red cloth. “Uhh.. Well then we’ll be on our way” said the goblin as he and one of the others picked up the box. His earlier cocky attitude completely disappeared without a trace.
When I turned around to speak to the adventurers a loud noise came from my stomach “GRRRrrrrrrrrr.” Using my [Intimidate] skill only made me hungrier. I was so hungry in fact that I honestly don't think I could have gotten back to the village walking so I decided I would take their carriage. “Ok, now that that's settled can you take me to Iphi village please” I said, already making my way into their carriage.
The noble looked pretty angry so I said “do you have a problem with taking me” I didn’t bother using [Intimidate] this time because I had already done the damage. He flinched a bit then walked to the front of the carriage. The male adventurer was still a bit scared but the girl seemed fine, after they got in we were on our way.
Me and the adventurers ended up talking a bit on the way to Iphi and they told me many things. They just recently started adventuring, in fact this was only their third quest. They both grew up on a farm but they were always obsessed with becoming adventurers. I told them a little bit about myself, all lies of course. I told them I was born in a small town in a neighboring country and I was just traveling around for fun.
They also told me a bit about the noble. His father was technically a merchant more than a noble but he helped a town that was being invaded during a recent war and was granted a noble title. Because of this his son grew up rich and sheltered so he became a bit of a dick. You can’t really blame him though, every person is a subject of their environment. If I grew up super rich and spoiled like that I'm sure I would be the same but that doesn’t make him any less of a dick.
I had already walked most of the way there so it only took about 2 hours to get back to Iphi. On the way Lily asked me a few questions about my job so I lied. Yeah these people seemed trustworthy enough but that doesn’t mean I'm gonna reveal something like that. I ended up saying my job was “Linguist” since I talked to those goblins, she bought it.
When we finally arrived I saw a very familiar sight. The carriage pulled up to the back of the bar I previously worked at and the person waiting was none other than Nisha. “Finally. Wait... Gill? What are you doing back in town” she said. A fair question, I did leave earlier that day and I did say goodbye to them only a couple hours ago. “I forgot to buy rations for the trip home…” I said in a slightly embarrassed tone.
“Figures. You can take some of this, we have extra stock anyway”
“For real!? Thank you so much!”
“No problem, you're gonna have to work for it anyway” she said, chuckling as she walked away.
Ah shit… I ended up working 6 hours that night and leaving the next morning. They gave me an entire box of nuts, fruits, and vegetables. It weighed around 40 pounds which was fine carrying for short distances but a whole three day trip seemed a little intense. I walked with it for around 20 minutes until I was out of sight of the town, then I decided to try one of the new skills I got from the job; [Shadow Realm].
The description said it could carry items So I figured, why not. “Shadow realm!” as soon as I said it a weird purple and black swirling portal appeared in front of me. This is straight outta video game I thought as I stepped into it. As soon as I did everything around me turned black and a voice suddenly rang in my mind “Welcome. I am your personal assistant Caroline. I am here if you have any questions regarding your job/any other things. I cannot guarantee the answer will always be correct” said the voice… said Caroline I guess.
“Huh, ok… I actually do have a question; how many other people have my job?”
My job seemed pretty rare but I wasn’t the only one who had it otherwise it would be “[Unique].”
“By my calculations approximately one other person has your Job”
“Ok… who are they?”
“Their name is Elizabeth Ryder a professor of philosophy at The Royal Magic Academy of Reolan”
“Huh, a professor”
“Ok I have another unrelated question; Can I make this place look better?”
“Of course, imagine your image of this place and I will make it a reality”
“Hmm, ok… it's in my mind now, go ahead”
“Ok”
Suddenly the plain black ground around me turned a dark green colour and grass began sprouting. Along with the grass came trees, flowers, and even a mountain with a lake by its side. Looking out onto the lake was a beautiful oak log cabin.
“Wow, this is perfect, thanks Caroline”
“I have no need for praise, this is my job”
“Alright, one more question, how much longer do I have left in here?”
“2 hours, 37 minutes, and 59 seconds at the time of your question. To make things easier I will create a floating board with your time limit above the lake”
“Woah thank you. You’re pretty awesome Caroline. I think I'm gonna check out the cabin then leave I gotta get back to ryfux’s place”
So I did just that, I looked inside the cabin(it was beautiful of course) and placed the box of food in one of the rooms before promptly leaving. I figured just saying “Shadow Realm” would work but it didn’t. “Say ‘return’” said Caroline out of nowhere. “Are you watching me?” I said with no response.
“Return”
It took me three days and two nights to get back to the cave but before I went back inside I decided to take a little detour… to the wolf’s grave
