《White Knight》Chapter Thirty-Two - The Memory Letter (Part Two)

As the pair of Eliza Westfield and Grove Cornelius had left the small house, Eliza was particularly set on finding her husband, but Grove had narrowed his gaze onto the fence that Roslo had been resting up against. It was empty. Only a damp patch of sweat remained against the pavement. There simply was no other trace.
"Roslo is likely fine by now. He will return to us soon I suppose, he is our only guardian for now after all." Grove had read out through the pores of the letter.
"Roslo was a tough boy." Lux reminisced.
"His fate here seems strange though." Luna added.
"He was probably intoxicated by a cultist. There were no night witches back then." Affirmed Lux.
"Perhaps the being we saw earlier though?" Luna pressed him.
"No. Quiet, Luna. night witches burned long before these events." Lux concluded the matter with deep discipline.
Lux had typically been the most disciplined between the four legendary knights of Bournington, with the fiery fierceness of Indominus Rose being on the other end of this spectrum. Indominus' recklessness had made way into his battle with Envy, as one of his tremendous blasts of fire had landed beside the emerging Grove and Eliza. Whether it was appropriate or not, the fight for Milun had made its way closer to Grove and Eliza than initially planned. The plan to have Eliza reach out to her husband was intended for a different environment. But despite the might of the two legendary knights on the front lines, Indominus Rose and Thomas Titanius, Envy had pushed them back into the main streets of the city. Thus, they had arrived upon Grove and Eliza.
Envy had been pursuing the others with strength that was unexpected. With fire magic that was unrivalled throughout all the lands, Indominus Rose had plenty of strength to ward off the menacing Envy. Though, his magic would have to be limited for the plan to be considered. Thus, Indominus approached Envy with hesitation at his hands but such reluctance to fight had cost him dearly. By the time the fight had reached the feet of Grove and Eliza, Indominus had lost an eye and his right arm had been dangling by a thread. Despite this, Indominus stood firm and still fought like a noble warrior. Though, both Grove and Indominus himself knew that no healing could rescue these consequences of battle. An eye had well and truly been taken, with an arm more than likely to join it.
Amongst this costly battle with Envy, another legendary knight had fought alongside the damaged Indominus. Thomas Titanius had been charging with hope. His figure cleared the ashy skies as he blossomed his lightning magic to provide light. This lightning power gave him plentiful strength and it was what he used to rain down his mighty blade into the ground. As if a teardrop had come thundering down from the heavens, this blade had a divine flutter as it soared through the air between it and the ground. Finally, it landed. A dome-shaped hole carved the ground as the sword reaped the roads of Milun with catastrophic intensity. With such miraculous swordsmanship, Thomas had contained the force of Envy. But as all eyes focused on the sparkles of Thomas Titanius' swordplay, Grove had searched away. A navy blue tinted at the corner of his eye.

"Pause here, my friend. Take a daring peek at Eliza." Grove read out through the letter.
"She seems perfectly fine." Lux said with a careful glance. "What is Grove thinking?" He pondered.
"Her figure appears to shine with a dark shade of blue." Observed Luna. "Perhaps Grove is referring to..." Before Luna could finish Lux had cut her off.
"Continue the letter." He demanded.
Lux had been left with impatient thought as the memory continued to play out ahead of him.
"Grove. Where is Lux?" Inquired Thomas as he receded towards Grove and Eliza.
"He is fighting off any stragglers." Guiltily replied Grove. "We'll have to do the negotiating here?" He asked.
"Yes. Come with me, Eliza. We have no more time." Implored Thomas.
With Indominus also retreating from the devastating Envy, Thomas cautiously brought forth Eliza Westfield. She looked deep within the eyes of her former lover, now a reckless beast enchained by the Sin of Envy. Could she really recover the consciousness, the body, the life of Edgar Westfield? As Thomas escorted her, he could all but hope so, along with his companions. Upon sighting Eliza, Envy began an instant ceasefire. The man that stood still in shock ahead of Eliza, should have been her lover, but was he? The flesh was there, enticing the hope that Eliza could awaken her fallen husband, but his consciousness was almost unrecognisable.
"Edgar, my darling..." Stuttered out Eliza, her green eyes hopelessly peering at her lover.
"Eliza! What are you doing with them? Stay away! Stay away!" Edgar yelled out maniacally, but at any sign of attack, Thomas was beside Eliza.
"No, Edgar. If I stay away, this illness, this disease, it will destroy you." Slowly said Eliza as she carefully clasped his trembling palm.
"I am already doomed, Eliza. Can't you see? Envy is a part of me now..." Edgar sighed hopelessly.
"Oh, Edgar..." Eliza wept out with a gentle pull. "Look at my eyes! You are Edgar Westfield, not Envy Westfield, not Edgar Envy!" Eliza had grabbed him by the eyes, whilst also tightly polishing his lips with a seducing taste of hers.
It hit him with surprise as a river of emotions swept through him. Relief for one moment melted through his heart, yet anguish stormed across his lifeless body. One final emotion swayed him. Fear. Something had paused his heartbeat during his romantic kiss. It had not been the shock of the lips. Strangely eery, a wild stroke of blue within Eliza's typically green eyes had appeared to be the suspect. Thus, Edgar's descent into lunacy had begun.
"No! Not you! Anything but you!" Edgar pushed away his wife with a fractured stare upon him - the very sanity he had left, it had become crushed by Eliza's devilish blue eyes.

"Edgar? It is me." Said Eliza, clutching her chest.
"Yes...you! You, you, you! You are evil...I cannot fall for your tricks anymore! Not anymore, I say!" Pulling out a small dagger, Edgar exclaimed.
"Edgar!" Eliza screamed, as soon her eyes saw the true peril in her lover's eyes.
"Argh! Witch, witch, witch! You are a witch! Get out of my mind! GIVE ME MY LIFE BACK, GIVE ME MY ELIZA!" Edgar thundered out in manic anger.
Such a desperate plea for freedom had halted Thomas Titanius with thought, but in pausing his guard he had left open Eliza for an attack. It was unthinkable still. Edgar attacking Eliza? A lover, trampling his lover with several stab wounds? Thomas froze in awe. His eyes could not comprehend the sheer calibre of savagery Edgar had punished Eliza with. Across the ground, she laid dormant accepting her death as Edgar relentlessly tore away at her flesh. Such savagery did come to an end after Thomas regained his senses. But only slightly did he have control over himself. With oceans of anger, Thomas swiped his sword like a wave ready to slice off Edgar's head clean. Yet, a bloody hand intervened with shocking resilience. Using the last of her energy, her very life, Eliza grabbed the sharp sword and moved it down towards Edgar's arm. With this mercy, Thomas shed a tear at the bloodbath.
"I failed you both." He said as the two bodies before him slept together in a pool of purest blood.
The astonished Indominus and Grove both came running to Thomas' side, but the damage was done. The blood could not be stopped. At the cost of trying to pause Eliza's bleeding, the trio had become painted in a deep shade of blood red.
"Are you still unable to heal, Grove?" Breaking an eery silence among the three, Indominus asked.
"Even if my mana was restored, there is no saving her." Observed Grove.
"Edgar will survive." Commented Thomas.
"You were going to kill him." Said Indominus.
"He killed her. He killed Eliza..." Thomas stuttered out.
"But if you let your anger get a hold over you, you are just the same as him." Said Indominus.
"Why did he get angry though? Pondered Grove.
"Now is not the time. We must clean this mess. Eliza is dead, we should be respectful." Ordered Indominus, his words had managed to twiddle the ears of the delirious Edgar.
"Who - who...is that? Is that my Eliza...dead? Dead...you say?" Edgar had opened his eyes to see the body of the woman he slaughtered.
Except he had seen different.
"You killed her...all of you killed her!" He had rambled out, as Thomas silently dragged him.
"Huh. So, Edgar believes we killed his wife..." Said Lux.
"But does he not remember killing her?" Asked Luna.
"That is why this is strange." Commented Lux.
"Lux. My letter ends here. We have sealed off Edgar with Envy in Marlborough Prison for further prosecution. He may have murdered his wife, but I believe he was trying to kill something else that day." Grove's concluding thoughts had received a sudden halt by Luna.
Quickly returning herself and Lux to the hidden room beneath Lux's small cottage, Luna acted strangely. Before Lux could even call out her suspicious behaviour, Luna began to dampen the resonance of her light as a spirit. Something had grasped the attention of her senses, a feeling of bitter distaste. Lux himself had caught onto the situation, and soon the two hid beneath the comfort of their home.
"Two." Said Luna, receiving a nod from Lux. "I recommend you board a boat and leave through these underground tunnels." She suggested.
"Are you sure, Luna?" Whispered Lux with worry.
"Lux Buchanan!" A jolt of dust fell from the floorboard above as a voice echoed loudly. "I met your son the other day. He is a lovely fellow. How selfish of you to have a family, when you never let Eliza and I do the same!" Said the voice.
"He escaped?" Lux thought in shock.
"Lux Buchanan. I want blood for blood." Demanded the muffled voice above.
"Sir. You must go. Follow the flow of the water, I have placed my lights there for you to follow." Said Luna.
"Surely he will see these lights?" Questioned Lux.
"These are just figments of your imagination through our connection. Now go. I will buy you some time." Ordered Luna.

Joshua Durand has always lived in someone else’s shadow, a side character in someone else’s show. His brother was the real hero of the tale, or he was until his ‘friends’ stabbed him in the back. Now though, he’s got a chance to step into the spotlight, as long as he’s willing to make a deal with the devil. He doesn’t know if this is the right decision or the wrong one, but what he does know is “It’s showtime!” --- This is forum quest story taking place in the same city/setting as my other stories: The Huntsman's Quest and Hacking Reality stories meaning that while a majority of the plot is made up by me, the major choices as well as what each chapter is about are usually made by the actual readers in forum votes.
