《unit: NO NAME》Chapter 3: Nameless Department

After accepting Mr. Mendela's offer to join their new department, I found myself in a room with Dante and two other unique-looking people whom I do not know. The room was full of necessities; everything inside it was for us. "From a shabby apartment into this? I will work hard to repay this." I thought to myself.
The two peculiar people seemed to had an irritated face before they looked at me.
"Is this the new guy?" A tall man that looked liked a delinquent asked.
"Does it not seem like it to you? Dumbass," the pink-haired girl responded, then she stuck her tongue out at him.
I felt uncomfortable while the two of them continued to exchange roasts. Their eyes turned sharp that it felt like they were pointing knives at each other.
Dante got annoyed, so he approached the two while he slowly raised his hands. Dante touched both of their shoulders, and in an instant, the two were shocked by electricity. Their bodies vibrated rapidly.
Dante dropped his hands from their shoulder, and the two of them stopped fighting.
"Stop yelling at each other and introduce yourselves quickly!" Dante shouted at them.
"Y-yes," the two of them spoke at the same time.
I participated and awkwardly said, "Uhh, should I go first?" They looked at me and nodded continuously. "I-I'm Aki Kaiba. I'm the new member here."
"Woah, A Japanese? That's quite rare, but by the way, I'm Maren! Maren Clark!" he grinned at me with his large and viciously sharp teeth.
"Ugh, I'm Chu Hua." The girl seemed like she was still annoyed.
"Can you be more friendly? Like seriously, nobody will like you and your flat chest." Maren was instantly kicked in the head by Chu and flew to the side, but Dante lets it slide.
"He deserved that." I thought to myself.
"Remember each other's names cause everyone in this room will start working together from now on." Dante looked at me and asked, "Did that ape tell you what we're gonna be doing first?"
"No? Mr. Mendela only said that this department's purpose was to do missions regarding the mainland," I answered Dante's question. When I told him about it, Dante was grinding his teeth.
"That damn red ape needs to do his job more seriously!" After he shouted, he sighed and decided to sit down. "Hey, Maren. Go get me some sushi at the store I frequently go at."
Maren got up with a bump on his head replied, "But I don't know whe-"
Dante glared at Maren, "Y-Yes sir!"
Chu, on the other hand, was quietly hiding her laughter.
"Chu," Dante called her. She instantly straightened her back and abruptly spoked, "Sir?!"
"Why the hell are you laughing? Go accompany Maren."
"Will do!" Chu instantly answered, and Maren smirked at Chu.
"What are the two of you waiting for!?" Dante yelled at them, then they turned stiff and jolted out of the room.

"Oh, I forgot to give them money. Well, It's not my problem." After the predicament, Dante looked at me.
"Y-Yes, sir?" I nervously spoked
"Go sit down. I'll give you a brief explanation on Rerum and this department that you just joined."
I listened, then I quietly grabbed and sat at the chair behind me.
"So, first of all. State what you think Rerum is."
"Well, as far as I know, Rerum is an organization responsible for making the three cities, Cybertown, Mechanica, and Gearmany. Each city has its own respective 'Godfather' that rules and protects the citizens from the Cryptids that somehow reaches here above," I calmly said.
"Okay, good. The three cities are constructed above the mainland so that lesser Cryptids gets here."
Dante took out his phone and was tapping and swiping on it. Then, he showed its screen to me; a video was playing.
"Have you heard about this?"
I looked at the video and replied, "Yes."
"So you know about the rapid rise of Cryptids showing in the city. Well, this makes explaining easier."
I pondered, picked up all my thoughts, and arrived at a conclusion.
"Are the rise of Cryptids appearing in the cities related to this department?" I questioned Dante.
"You're quite smart, huh. I guess that ape does have an eye." Dante placed his phone on the table, "This department will undergo through a ton of missions, not just in the mainland, but as well as Cybertown and the other two cities as well." Dante placed his hands in his pockets.
"I've been thinking about this for a while now but, what kind of missions are we really talking about?" I asked.
"The ape didn't explain that to you either?" Dante sighed yet again.
"Our main mission is to find out what is the cause for these rising appearances of Cryptids in the three cities. Hence, we'll be dispatched to the mainland pretty often to look for clues. The ape has a hunch that who's ever behind this migh-" Maren and Chu barged into the room. Maren had an infuriated looked in his eyes, and Chu was scolding him constantly.
"I told you to don't mind them, didn't I!" I noticed that Chu was slightly blushing.
"But they were harassing you! Like if I could ever ignore that!" Maren loudly replied, and Chu turned silent.
Maren shifted his focus to Dante. "Oh, and by the way, you forgot to give us cash, Da-" Maren saw Dante's face that looked like he was about to explode.
"You forgot to give us cash, and just so you know, we don't have any money," Chu bluntly said while her eyes are focused somewhere else.
"You kids... Need to KNOCK!" Dante furiously shouted at them. The sound was enough to make me deaf for a few seconds. Maren and Chu were frozen.

Dante stood and approached them while he slowly raised his hands and touched their shoulders, "Make sure you survive this one." Dante grinned, and his face resembled a devil.
"W-We'll go back and use our m-money instead." Maren nervously said.
"Surely you won't damage a girl's pretty face, will you? hehe." Chu's legs were shaking uncontrollably.
The two of them looked pitiful.
Dante let out a strong surge of electricity in his hands onto their body, causing them to blast off, destroying the door behind them. Maren and Chu were lying down on the fallen door while their body was twitching.
Dante turned his head towards me and said, "Oh yeah, right. I forgot to tell you this, but welcome to this nameless department. We still haven't chosen a name yet."
My first experience in the department was quite surreal, and I thought to myself, "Why did I join here again?"
"Stand up now, you two!" Dante ordered them.
Maren and Chu quickly stood, "They're so used to this, aren't they?" I whispered to myself.
"Tomorrow, we'll be training in one of the other departments so that you three can get your license in the upcoming exam. So, get ready. Dismissed! The three of you can go and do whatever you want now." Dante told them before he quickly disappeared.
"Oh, so we won't be going after a mission first?" I muttered to myself
Maren noticed my confused look and approached me, "Hey, man. Don't tell me you don't know what a license is? Well, behold my vast knowledge of intellect!"
I already knew what a license is, but he was starting to look like a funny guy even though his face is still intimidating, so I just let him be.
"A license is a kind of thing that when you show it to the thing, you can go out of this and here. Pretty easy to understand, right? There's no need to thank m-" Chu pinched and dragged his ear.
"Ow ow ow, What do you think you're doing!"
"Explain it properly, dumbass. A license is a piece of card that allows you to use your Phenomena in public. It also allows you to leave the city and explore the mainland." Chu explained to me while he was still pinching Maren's ear."
"I already know what a license is," I said.
Chu's eyes widened, and her face turned red, "If you already know what a license is, then say it already! I hate wasting my time." Chu clicked her tongue, then she let go of Maren's ear and walked with each step as a stomp away to the hallway.
Maren rubbed his ear, "That damn Chu doesn't have any restraint at all! Though, that's just her outer shell. She's probably at the bathroom right now shouting how embarrassing it was." Maren smiled.
"Well, it was your fault, to begin with," I accidentally said out loud.
"You also don't have any restraint, do you?"
"I didn't mean it like th-" suddenly, I heard someone groaned across the hallway.
"Hey, Maren, Did you just hear that?"
Maren looked at me, "Hear what?" he replied.
I looked at the corner of my eye and saw a silhouette of a woman across the hallway; it wasn't Chu. The woman noticed that I saw her, so she ran, and in instinct, I chase after her. Maren also followed me.
While we were running across the hallway, Maren was confused and asked me, "Where are you going, Aki?"
"I saw someone stalking us!" Right after I answered him, I turned around towards where the woman was observing us, and I once again saw the woman taking a left turn.
"If I could remember when Mendela was giving me a tour, that hallway leads to the storage room," I murmured while I was about to turn left. "There, I saw the door opened!"
Maren and I switched to walking and were slowly heading towards the storage room's door.
The inside was quite average-sized when we looked into it. We were lucky since it was easy to find someone hiding in it.
"Let's look for her." Maren nodded to me and headed to the left side while I went to the right.
While I was carefully watching my step and looking for the stalker, I noticed a box moving. "I know you're in there. Come out already and tell us who you are!" I shouted at it.
I slowly approached it until I was right in front of the box, then I quickly opened it, "There you are!"
It was just a rat; it jumped out of the box, and I fell on my back. I felt like an idiot and was glad no one saw me, so I stood back up and decided to look around more.
A few seconds later, I heard a shout. "Aha! I found you!" I could tell it was from Maren, then another familiar sound followed. I couldn't quite grasp who it was, so I ran and hurried my pace.
I arrived at where Maren found the woman. I was shocked when I saw her face and body struggling while Maren held both of her arms.
"Is this the woman that stalked us? She looks more like a girl, though."
"Maren! Let her go. I know her!" I quickly recognized her right when I arrived.
"O-oh, okay." Maren let go of both of her hands.
She was panting and had an embarrassed expression on her face.
I was confused as to why she was here and why she was stalking us.

CW: Contains mildly graphic scenes of violence/death, topics of unwanted pregnancy/abortion, scientific experimentation on sapient beings, depression/suicide, grief, and trauma. The tone of this fiction is often dark and distinctly dystopian in lighter shades of Margaret Atwood, though where there is darkness there is always hope and light. On Hiatus Until September When the School Year Begins and Mom This story takes a considerable amount of time and mental energy to complete. I thought I had enough backlog and time to post it as a serial while COVID kept my child home from school, but it turns out while I can quickly write other pieces, I cannot produce the quality I need with this one at an acceptable rate. We'll resume in September when my days are much freer. Thank you for your patience and stay tuned for a different storytelling romp more suited for a serial platform in the meantime.
