《VOID REQUIEM》Chapter 13: A ray of hope

Using his other hand, he back slapped the wolf like alien to the ground.
“Nice to meet you!”
The surrounding guards all immediately went to high alert, circling Ken.
“I don’t care, whoever you are. But that was your worst mistake!” The wolf alien shouted as he tried to get up from the ground. The slap was quick, but painful. Making it hard for the wolf to get up. The surrounding wolves had spears in their hands that had a gold energy radiating from the tip.
“Young man. You shouldn’t have intervened. You will get yourself killed.” the old man said to Ken, scrambling to stand on his own two feet. Ken looked at him and back at the slaves, that were all shaken in fear. He silently stared at them. His mind was troubled by seeing this cruelty. The wolves, seeing him distracted, jumped at him. Ken titled his eyes towards the front as a huge whip slashed the nearby enemies to the side. Ken’s arm had transformed back into a tentacle.
“I don’t care what enemies stand in my way. If they piss me off, then I will take them down without hesitation.”
A wolf jumped at Ken from behind. Ken grabbed the spear with his hand and head-butted the wolf. He simultaneously threw the spear towards another wolf. The other wolves were paralyzed by fear, but Ken didn’t stop. He dashed towards the remaining five wolves. Pulling his hand back, he transformed it into a giant black spike fist with red lining across. Using the giant hands, he slammed hard on the ground as the enemies scattered because of the shock wave. Using this chance, he wrapped one in the tentacle and shot it towards another. The remaining three wolves began shooting at him with the spears. Ken pulled out his shield, but it seemed the yellow lasers coming from the spears were damaging the shield. But the continuous shooting created a huge smoke. The wolves slowly walked forward, trying to close the distance. Ken jumped out of the smoke and pulled his leg forward. His leg instantly transformed into a black, hard boot. He dashed back to the wolves as he hit the ground with that foot.

“Meteor Stomp!”
He shouted as he fell down, which created an enormous shock wave knocking the wolves out of sight.
The yellow aliens looked in awe seeing this mysterious being in front of them, taking down these vile rulers without a scratch. Ken then turned back at them, at the old man. The top hatch was open as a small light beckoned down at Ken as he smiled at the old man with a grin on his face. To these yellow aliens they saw their savior, a hero, but the old man he saw something more, something even brighter.
“A ray of Hope”
The yellow aliens rushed towards him, cheering him from all sides.
“There you are! Don’t just randomly jump on giant robots, you idiot!”
A voice said from the top. It was Akane who had finally climbed on top of the robot. She jumped down and saw the bodies lying on the ground. “What did you do?” she said in a grumpy voice.
Ken looked at all sides and replied with a grin. “Some guy pissed me off. So I took them down.”
“That’s the most lousy reason I have ever heard!” she shouted at him.
“But it's true.”
“Don’t shit like that and get us into unnecessary trouble.”
‘Come on, what are some guards gonna do”
They kept on bickering. The old man just stared at the situation. Suddenly, his whole body froze up as he clenched his chest.
The other yellow aliens took notice.
“Oh, no boss Halo!”
He rushed to his aid. Ken and Akane stopped bickering and headed towards the old man. The old man fell to the ground.
“He had a heart attack!”
One alien said, picking his body up. Ken picked his body up.
“Lets take him back to the ship. Maybe Miku can fix him”
“What about this robot? If the other ones see this one not operating, they will notice something is wrong, '' Akane replied.
Ken became conflicted about what to do. The yellow aliens looked at each other, then poked Ken. Ken looked back at them with confusion.

“It's ok. Take boss Halo and escape. We’ll continue working so as not to arouse suspicion.”
“What are you saying?! If the other guards show up, you will be treated worse! As if I’m gonna let that happen!” Ken shouted.
“You did enough for us. Plus, even this momentary victory won’t do anything. Not while their leader is on this planet. They will be back with more reinforcements and if that happens, no one will be safe. So leave now!”
The aliens replied. Ken was speechless. Seeing how vulnerable, how hopeless they were. It made Ken himself feel helpless.
“Ken…” Akane tapped his shoulder. Then her expression was saying the same thing.
the aliens smiled at Ken and responded,
“Boss halo means a lot to us. So nurse him back to health, okay?”
Ken couldn’t find the words to say. Carrying the old man halo in his hands, both he and Akane jumped out of the robot.
As they were leaving the place, the stopped robot was slowly being surrounded by more robots as reinforcements jumped on to it. But He didn’t stop. He kept on running away towards the cliff, not to be seen by the smoke covering the top.
Back on the top. Miku was casually fixing the ship. Her giant robot was sitting here.
“You know Milo, I wonder what came over me to join this rag-tag group of idiots.”
Milo was the name of her robot. As she was fixing the wires, milo was doing the heavy lifting. Milo replied, with a beeping noise. Miku, hearing that, replied,
“Yea. Maybe we both were drunk.”
It seemed she had understood Milo perfectly. As Milo was pulling some of the debris away, she looked to the side of the smoke.
“What’s the matter Milo?”
Milo made her beeping noise again. Miku jumped at her shoulder and pulled her goggles back in her eyes, trying to get a better vision of what’s coming. From the smoke came out Ken and Akane.
“Why the hell are you running back?”
Ken dashed towards the ship without speaking. Miku looked at Akane with confusion. Akane replied with a sigh.
“Come with us.”
Ken put the old man down on the table. The old man was barely breathing. Akane, Miku, and Milo followed behind.
“What did you bring inside the ship?”
Ken looked at Miku as he held her shoulder in desperation.
“Please help this old man, Miku!”
“Don’t look at me. I’m not a freaking doctor.”
“There still gotta be something you can do. I know you can! You’re smart, right?!”
Those last words triggered Miku. She pulled out her monitor and began aggressively typing.
“You’re questioning my intellect, you monkey brain. I’ll have you know I’m the smartest in all four regions of the universe!”
Akane and Ken looked at her as she kept on pulling out a new screen after another.
“Milo. Help me with the machinery. We need to fix the blood flow. I may not be a doctor but I can just search it on the web,” she noticed Ken and Akane looking at her as she worked.
“What are you staring at? Get lost and let us do our thing!”
Ken and Akane immediately head outside. Ken sat down at the front of the hatch, looking at the ground with sadden expression.
“I never knew outlaws were so compassionate.”
Ken was silent for a few seconds. But he replied.
“Well, I guess I’m not your typical outlaw then”
“I see” A sense of comfort could be seen in her face hearing those words.

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
