《Severing The Heavens》Chapter 4: Tattoo

“Grandpa! The boy’s waking up! Hurry!”
Waking up to a certain cute and familiar voice, Lin Xian slowly opened his eyes.
As he opened his eyes, he could hear the sound of footsteps gradually becoming louder and louder.
Feeling more of his body, Lin Xian felt that he was lying down on something like a bed. It was hard, but a small layer of something like fur still made it comfortable.
Right now, Lin Xian immediately realized that this place was definitely different from the boundless farmlands dyed in red where he fell unconscious.
Looking at his surroundings, he noticed that he was inside the confines of something like a room made of wood. As for the ceiling where he was looking at right now, they seem to be enormous leaves which had the same crimson color as that of the plants he saw before he fell unconscious.
Thinking back, he could easily compare such a room to those of tropical huts in the sea, or perhaps even those wooden houses that could be found in rural areas.
However, he still felt perplexed. He had fallen unconscious yet again, and every time he woke up after falling unconscious, he would always end up somewhere else. Finally unable to hold his confusion and curiosity to himself, Lin Xian muttered, “Where am I?”
“Boy, are you alright?”
Just after Lin Xian’s words escaped from his mouth, he suddenly heard the voice of an old man.
Looking towards the direction from where the voice came from, Lin Xian saw two people. One was a bearded and wrinkled old man which looked to be 70-80 years old. Beside this old man, there was a tanned girl with brown hair about 14-15 years old, holding the right arm of the old man.
These two people wore some sort of tribal clothing barely covering their bodies. The old man wore an old and dirty sash that covered half of his chest, and a ragged trousers that was evidently tarnished by the years.
As for the girl, she wore some sort of an animal’s hide that only covered her chest, and a skirt that was a little above her knees.
In Lin Xian’s eyes, this sort of clothing would be equal to what those tribal people, who had lived some thousands of years ago in earth, had worn. To put it simply, when he saw them, he was immediately perplexed.
[Who are these guys?]
Lin Xian could only ask himself in his mind. He was rather afraid because a certain possibility occurred in his mind…
[Aren’t these guys some sort of a tribal group? If they are, then was I sent to the Amazon or something?]
For Lin Xian, these thoughts were truly plausible. Seeing these people, there were perhaps two possibilities. The bigger one being, someone was pranking him big time… As for the other one, he was really sent to some ancient tribal people’s land and his life would be in danger if this tribal group would turn out to be cannibals or those that offer living sacrifices to their gods.

As someone who had read history and have watched documentaries about these kind of tribal groups, Lin Xian could feel a shiver ran down his spine. Soon, he felt his heart pound much faster than normal, becoming tenser and tenser with each passing moment.
“Boy? You’re face is going pale… Do you have an injury or something? But I’m sure I found nothing when I probed your body a while ago.” The old man spoke as he slowly approached Lin Xian.
Lin Xian had probably lost his mind from fear that he somehow failed to comprehend what the old man was speaking about. However, it wasn’t really farfetched to say that he couldn’t comprehend the old man’s words.
After all, the words the old man was using… was definitely not a language he had ever heard before.
“Please lift your hand.” The old man spoke. As of this moment, he was already beside Lin Xian who was still trembling on the bed.
Perhaps because of fear and confusion, Lin Xian subconsciously lifted his hand towards the old man. The old man then held Lin Xian’s hand, and soon, Lin Xian felt a warmth the slowly coursed throughout his body.
“Your body is definitely alright. No injuries or wounds whatsoever. Do you feel anything wrong?” The old man asked.
“Hey, answer Grandpa!” Suddenly, the brown-haired girl walked over and spoke, her voice contained a hint of worry. Her short hair waved as she made big strides towards Lin Xian.
At this moment, both the brown-haired girl and the old man were curiously looking at Lin Xian with a somewhat anxious expression on their face.
With a fearful expression, Lin Xian somehow managed to realize something extremely important. He could, in fact, understand them. Even though the words they spoke were something he had no recollections of, he could still fully comprehend it.
It was as if those words were a part of him, like those words had naturally existed in his mind. In fact, he felt that he could naturally speak it if he wished to.
[Just what is happening…]
“I-I’m alright, eh?”
Just as Lin Xian made an effort to actually speak the language these two people used, he came to yet another astonishing revelation. His voice... his voice was so small, as if he was a child. It was filled with cutesy, making Lin Xian feel rather embarrassed, especially now that he was in front of a pretty girl about his age.
“What’s wrong? Are you alright?” The brown-haired girl asked. With her current expression, it was obvious that she was anxious regarding Lin Xian’s condition. She got closer to Lin Xian, sitting over the bed where Lin Xian was lying, just right beside the old man.
“N-No. I’m alright really. Uhm… Where am I?” After a breath or two, Lin Xian somehow managed to compose himself and spoke yet again. He had yet to accept the fact that his voice had turned so immature, but he couldn’t really do anything about it, so he just decided to leave it be.

“You are currently in the vicinity of the Yellowtail Tribe. Last night, Hanbei, my granddaughter, found you unconscious near the edge of the Crimson Prairie, so we brought you here.” The old man answered, narrating the events about how Lin Xian ended up in this place.
“Hey, did you come from one of those nearby tribes? Was your tribe also attacked by the Black Stone Tribe?”
Before Lin Xian could even think of what and how to reply to the old man, the brown-haired girl suddenly spoke, her voice filled with both curiosity and a subtle hint of fear.
However, as for Lin Xian, hearing her words just made him a lot more confused. He thought to himself, [Just what is the girl talking about? Yellowtail Tribe… Crimson Prairie… Attacked by the Black Stone Tribe…]
Slowly, he repeated the more remarkable words that the old man and the girl spoke. He slowly digested it, however, after a few moments of silence, Lin Xian still failed to actually connect these words to any of what his mind could recall. To put it simply, he just didn’t know anything.
“Hanbei, that’s rude. Go outside first, let me talk with this boy and I’ll let you meet with him again later, alright?” The old man said towards the brown-haired girl whom he called Hanbei.
“But… grandfather!” Hearing her grandfather, the browned-haired girl, Hanbei, instantly pouted, which was coupled with a disappointed expression.
Looking at them, Lin Xian almost let out a chuckle. Now that he had completely brushed off his drowsiness, he could observe the two people before him more clearly.
All the visible hair on the old man’s body was white, and aside from the rather obvious observation Lin Xian made from when he first saw him, Lin Xian could make out something vague about this old man: ferocious.
While this old man seemed to be gentle and aloof, Lin Xian felt that the old man was someone extremely terrifying. He thought that if the old man wished to, he could easily exterminate him with a flick of his hand. That was how fearful Lin Xian felt about this old man.
As for the girl called Hanbei, her brown hair was a little bit curly, reaching her shoulders, making her look very adorable. Especially with the pout and the disappointed expression on her face, Lin Xian couldn’t help but feel a warmth in his heart, thinking that this girl would be a good little sister to take care of.
Right at this moment, the old man focused his eyes on Hanbei, and with a piercing gaze, he said, “Hanbei…”
“Humph!” With a snort, Hanbei just turned around and left the room, leaving only Lin Xian and the old man inside.
The old man looked at Hanbei’s silhouette as she left the room. After a few moments, the old man just sighed as he looked at Lin Xian and spoke, “That girl is rather unscrupulous, she usually does whatever she wants… But please excuse her, she wasn’t really like that before, only, those mongrels from the Black Stone Tribe had killed her parents a few years ago…”
Hearing the old man, Lin Xian almost let out a sigh as the rather funny feeling he had a while ago instantly vanished. He felt pity about the girl, and thinking back to the girl’s question a while ago, he felt that the reason why the girl was curious about him was because she thought that he had experienced the same fate she had.
Getting her parents killed…
“Boy, what’s your name?”
While Lin Xian was sighing again and again inside his heart, the old man suddenly spoke, taking Lin Xian away from his thoughts. Lin Xian then opened his mouth and spoke, “Lin Xian.”
“Hmm, Lin Xian… My name is Lu Zhen, the tribal chief of the Yellowtail Tribe, and the girl from before is my granddaughter, Lu Hanbei. A few days ago, we’ve been receiving news about the Black Stone Tribe attacking the nearby tribes and pillaging. If by chance, was the Dark Crow Tribe also attacked?”
Once the old man, Lu Zhen, finished speaking, Lin Xian’s mind blanked out. He knew nothing the place or the tribes, and because of that, he just couldn’t find a word that he could use to answer the old man.
Add the fact that he knew nothing to his thoughts about Hanbei and her rather cruel experience, he unconsciously made a small frown, as if he was really saddened by something.
As for Lu Zhen, he had completely misunderstood the implication of the sad expression on Lin Xian’s face. He thought that Lin Xian remembered some bad memories, so he felt the need to just stop with the current conversation and leave it as it was. It seemed like ‘it’ was truly the case, so the Lu Zhen just said, “It’s alright… I’m sorry for making you remember cruel memories.”
As Lu Zhen finished speaking, his eyes moved to the chest of Lin Xian and sighed. Yet another tribe had fallen in the hands of those brutes. The old man clenched his fist; killing intent was seeping through every pore of his body.
As for Lin Xian, cold sweat immediately covered his body when he felt the killing intent that was let out by the old man. Truly... frightening. But right at this moment, Lin Xian noticed the line of sight of Lu Zhen, realizing that he was staring at his chest.
Lin Xian followed Lu Zhen’s gaze, confused whether there was something wrong about his chest. And thhe moment he looked at his chest, something baffling appeared before his eyes.
On the right side of his chest, there was a black tattoo resembling a crow whose wings were wide-opened. However, even within the almost 16 years of life Lin Xian had experienced, he knew that this tattoo... had never existed!
