《My Only Lorelei》Vol 2: Chapter 18 - Waiting In The Mist

There wasn’t much that needed to be said early the next morning.

Everyone knew what they were supposed to do, and they headed out early to reach their spots.

Scarlett, Mun, and I were just getting ready to head out. There was one more group after us, it was Reginald and a woman called Agnes.

Surprisingly, even next to Reginald, Agnes appeared big, her muscles were defined, and she was quite tall as well. She had short blond hair and if you were to look at her from the back, you might even think she was a guy.

They were still fast asleep by the time we were heading out.

On our way out, we met with Tilly and Zoe. I hadn’t been officially introduced to them yet, but I had heard them being called by those names.

The one with the long black hair and had an elegant air about her was called Tilly and the one with a brown ponytail with a chubby figure was called Zoe.

Zoe had a body of a large man with curly black hair and dark skin over her shoulder. That man must be Tommy, the one that wandered around the docks.

“No problem, I assume?” Scarlett nodded to Tilly.

With a flick of her hair, Tilly scoffed, “Of course not. Tommy may be big, but he’s as dumb as a man can be. We just led him away from the crowd and then Zoe knocked him out.”

“I’d always wanted to try chock grabbing Tommy…” Zoe said with a crazy smile on her face.

I made a mental note to stay away from her as much as possible.

“Tie him up and then put him near Din’s friends. Make sure to keep an eye on them. They’re bound to wake up soon,” Scarlett instructed.

The other two nodded and then walked past us towards the camp.

“It’s still quite early, but we should be positioned near the medical supply room. Betty goes to check on the supply every morning at 9am so we have about two hours before she gets there. Also, wear your hood,” she said as she pulled my hood over my head.

I hadn’t realized that I was the only one of the three that didn’t have their hood up. Was I really that out of it right now?

Mun even went through the trouble of putting on her mask. It was the mask that I had seen her with the very first time I met her and Tal.

Thinking on it now, Mun was acting a lot quieter now than usual. She hadn’t said a single word after coming to the camp. I couldn’t tell what kind of face she was making under that mask and I wasn’t sure if I should even ask if anything was wrong.

We reached the medical supply room in no time. The mist was still thick in the city so that was the perfect cover for us to sneak up to them on. Scarlett made sure to position us just far enough that they wouldn’t see us watching, but we could still see who was entering or leaving the building.

“Now we wait,” Scarlett whispered.

The two hours felt like an eternity as we waited at a distance in complete silence. The city center was far enough that we couldn’t hear the sound of the bustling crowds or the sales pitch of the shop owners.

We took turns keeping a watch on the building while the other two got some rest. Scarlett began the first watch and then it was me and finally to Mun and then back.

Even though I could tell the sun was out, the mist was still thick, maybe even thicker now.

“Get up. We’re moving closer,” Scarlett instructed us.

I looked over at the medical supply room and I couldn’t even see the entrance anymore.

As we started making our way closer though, we saw two figures heading towards the building.

“That’s Betty,” Scarlett claimed.

I was surprised she could tell from this distance and through the thick mist. Then who was the other figure?

While squinting her eyes, Scarlett clicked her tongue, “She’s with Crowell.”

“What do we do now?” I asked.

“We wait. There’s nothing much we can do if he’s around.”

Then I realized, “I’m immune to his mind control.”

“Immune to it?” Scarlett asked.

I nodded and then explained, “He tried to use it on me before, but I still had control over my body. He kept me locked in that prison because he knew he couldn’t control me.”

Scarlett held her chin with her fingers as she thought.

“I can go in there and grab Betty,” I suggested.

She instantly rejected the plan, “No. We’ll wait.”

“But…”

“Charging in while Crowell is nearby, even if you’re immune to his power, doesn’t make it any less dangerous. The moment he sees you, he can notify the people of Lanport to go after you. The last thing we need right now is for Crowell to realize our plan and make it more dangerous for us.”

I dropped my shoulders as I had nothing to say to that. I just didn’t like the idea of waiting out here when we knew Scarlett’s friend was already in there.

“Rushing will only bring mistakes,” Scarlett lectured. “Make sure to remember that if you plan to live long.”

“He’s out,” Mun pointed out.

Crowell left the building alone so that must mean Betty was still in there.

“Let’s give it a few more seconds and then we’ll head in.”

Just as she instructed, we waited for a bit before we made our way towards the medical supply room.

On our way, Scarlett seemed uneasy.

“I just hope taking them far enough from the city can get rid of the mind control…”
