The vul is a fox mutated to be larger, yet still fast and agile compared to their normal, vulpine brethren. Their fur coats are generally a cream-white with hints of different color shades in them. The colors in a vul's coat can change and intensify over time as the vul develops an affinity for an element and works towards its mastery. While not necessarily hostile, vuls will defend their territory against intruders, or those who they perceive as intruders.

The vul comes in two types: wild and urban. The wild vul prefer forests and grasslands and tend to be more directly confrontational and physical, while urban vul occupy the ruins of bookstores, schools, and libraries and will trick or misdirect their foes. Both types of vul are the same species, differing mainly in temperament rather than biology.

A vul can grow into an el'vul, although this is not an indication of physical maturation but magical eminence.
