《Stupid Cat》5- Friendly Mountains

Ichi's 'school' is a two floor thatched roof house where young girls named Rikya and Satou lived. Rikya, the local shrine maiden, owned the house and offered it to be used as the gathering place for the young people of the village. Until two years ago, it was Myon and Syon who came over to Rikya's house for "self-study". Then Reyna came, and six months ago, Ichi.

When he walked in Rikya's house, he saw Rikya doing oil painting. The detail of the scene felt incredible, but in six months Ichi couldn't remember her looking at him even once. Today Rikya looked at him, smiled, and went back to painting. Ichi felt for sure she could see his half-possessed state. Unlike Myon, Syon, and Renya, he only thought of Rikya as cute, so Ichi felt safer around her than the other girls.

Ichi huddled in the bathroom tub soon after 'school' started, studying the ceiling. Myon said a bright hi with a wave of her hand and Ichi retreated to the bathroom. He'd do that sometimes, read, or go for a walk. Reyna left Ichi alone at Rikya's house, she would do some writing exercises and math from difficult sounding books, and Syon would be nearby reading. Which left Myon either doing exercise outside, disassembling or reassembling her gun, or playing board games with Satou.

Ichi heard a knock on the bathroom door. Fearing the worst, he sunk down a bit into the tub with the whites of his eyes showing and pulled out the tsukigomani or whatever. Ichi put his hand on the tied seal, ready to rip it off, hoping he'd be quick on the draw.

"Can I come in? There's something I wanted to tell you." Myon's warm voice reverberated through the door.

"Yes." Ichi croaked.

Myon opened the door with a smile, spinning her gun around her finger. Walking close, Ichi almost ripped the seal until Myon offered Ichi the handle side of the gun.

"Check it out," Myon grinned.

Ichi took his hand off the seal and moved it slowly towards the gun.

"It's not loaded." Myon said.

Ichi took the gun. Blood rushed to his head, excitement pouring through him. Noticing for the first time, it reminded him of something from a youtube video, the name sprang to mind.

"Luger? But the barrel is kind of long... Isn't this that gun Nazi's used?"

Myon wore a tight grin at that comment.

"It's a magic tool. The original, designed by a mage in the 1900's for Spirit Hunter use."

"Antique." Ichi said as he examined it.

"Syon and I were watching you, Ichi, since you came here. You had some fun the other day, sounds like."

Ichi tensed his shoulders, and sighed.

"This about that mountain lord?"

"Mountain Lord? What are you talking about? This is about that Bakeneko following you around." Myon said.

Ichi felt it best to not to say anything about how he killed a magic talking bear.

"My Grandpa was worried you and Syon would get on my case about the cat. He gave me this," Ichi showed Myon the tsukihogame or whatever with his other hand.

Myon took the paper, her face going sour.

"This could have been bad. You'd get pulled into servitude for the rest of your life!" Myon handed the paper back to him.

"I had a feeling it was something like that." Ichi sighed. "What does it do?"

"It would have been better than dying. But, not by much. Summons a powerful spirit. One I'd have trouble with. A lot of trouble." Myon groaned.

Ichi realized that this was his first time talking with Myon this much. He felt relief that she sounded as friendly as she looked.

Myon smiled, and Ichi's eyes met hers.

"We were given the choice to kill you or train you once we reported to the Seer's Council abou the bakeneko. You're lucky I decided to give you a chance."

Ichi's heart raced at her words. Training?

"What a fun place this village is, I'm getting excited already." He moaned.

Myon crossed one arm under her ample chest and put her hand to her chin, staring off into the distance. Her smile went straight, then curled up again.

"Yeah!" She said. "I'll be training you. If I left it up to Syon..." Myon paused, "So! Tomorrow, you're coming over to my place for a kendo match."

Ichi always wanted to do kendo. He shifted the gun Myon gave him in his hands.

"What about the Bakeneko?" Ichi asked, handing the gun back to Myon, who sheathed it behind her back.

Clicking the safety buckle on the gun Myon said, "The Seer's Council decided that she's going to carry the cat within her. You have a week to pass the cat into her."
