《Universe 2.0》Chapter 44 The underground heaven(1/2)

A bunch of grapes and a pineapple opened the door. "Hello, alien friends. You must be William's team!" Pineapple said.

"Yes, was it Carly who told you?" William asked.

"Yes, exactly." Answered the grapes, "It's very late. Are you guys tired? Why don't you take a rest first? When you are no longer tired, I will show you around underground!"

But the party did not feel tired. So Ranran politely declined the grapes and asked him to take them directly underground.

Lights went on and off as they passed. They went down a spiral staircase and through a long, narrow corridor until they reached the hall. William saw plenty of fruits gathering in the brightly lit hall, enjoying delicious fresh fruits and juice, and discussing various topics. Seeing these alien friends, they immediately stopped their activities and welcomed them instead. Grape and pineapple introduced them to other fruits.

"Welcome to the underground heaven!" Said Cherimoya, the owner.

"Thank you. It looks really nice here." Ranran answered with a smile, "What kind of place is this?"

"Heaven, of course! This is a large fruit growing base. It all started with a camel scientist. He developed the 'consciousness program', a sequence of genes that makes the creature it is transferred into conscious. After testing, he modified it a few times and put the more stable gene into the fruits, including me, so we were alive. He told us that in order to improve the quality of fruits on the planet, he needed us to set up a fruit growing base. We can add new functions if we need in the future. That's how this underground heaven was born. We use the light that is most helpful for photosynthesis of the plants here -- near infrared, near ultraviolet and visible red and violet light."

Hearing this, William became more convinced that the planet was very much like Earth. Plus, he was curious about why plants on Earth had little access to invisible light, while plants here could. "Maybe it's because of genes too." He thought.

Cherimoya continued, "This measure helps with productivity. Drip irrigation and soilless cultivation techniques improve the quality of fruits. The camel scientist told us to start a secret planting plan first. Once we feel the time is right, we can publicize it and encourage people to buy our quality fruits. He also built a vegetable planting base and a cash crop planting base. In addition, he built an underpass that would allow people to travel quickly to these areas in the future. However, because none of the three bases have been announced to the public, the underpass has been closed for the time being."

Pineapple, who went to open the door for the party, took his words, "But we believe that this day will not be far away. You arrived a little early because we are scheduled to open the three bases in two days. However, it is rare for us to meet alien friends, so we will still treat you well!"

The fruits cheered. William thanked the pineapple and cherimoya. "The name really matches the reality. The underground heaven!" Natalie said, "I'm sure when you open it up, it will be rave! I look forward to your success!"

"Thank you, alien friends." Replied the cherimoya.

"Let me show you around!" Said one green apple. Then they walked through a door and another long, narrow corridor.

William noticed that there were portraits of the camel scientist hanging on the walls of the corridor, as well as pictures of him with the fruits. "This camel scientist is really something. I learned about another of his achievements today. I must have a good talk with him when I visit him." He thought.

While thinking, they had come to the planting area. A variety of fruits were arranged neatly in the soil-covered area. The faucets, which dotted the soil and were controlled by computers, supplied each fruit with water precisely. Soilless areas were more intelligent to better control the growing conditions of the fruits.

"You can taste the fruits here if you want." Apple invited them warmly. Ranran picked up a bright strawberry. The milky sweetness immediately enveloped her taste buds and made her smile with satisfaction. The others were also full of praise. "It seems that your quality is really first-class in the universe!" Said Rebecca, "I even wish you'd opened up earlier!"

"Ha ha, we don't think so." Apple said shyly, "Providing better quality is more important than making more money."

"That's true. Yet I feel that the efforts of the camel scientist will not be in vain! It's all worth it!" William said.

"Thanks! We will be able to exchange the first-class quality for the public trust!" Apple said confidently.

Apple also showed them around drip irrigation and soilless cultivation areas. "Twenty years ago, that would have been out of reach on our planet." Said William, "It is only in recent years that we have gradually mastered such advanced technology. And not all countries on our planet have that kind of technology. Some economically backward areas cannot quickly master, so they will turn to developed countries. My country has helped many other countries by providing their residents with top-quality fruits and vegetables."

"Oh, that's good, too." Said apple, "We too will help each other, no matter how difficult it is. As long as we can help others solve their problems, we will feel happy. That's what people on this planet think."

"Wow." Ranran admired extremely. "When will earthmen do the same?" She thought.

Apple took them back. "I have just visited your fruit growing base here. I have to say, this is much better than our planet! This really is an underground heaven!" William was full of praise.

"I'm flattered." The cherimoya stood up and thanked them, "We are just adopting green habits so that we can live better on this planet."

William now had a new idea: the planet of the present was Earth of the future. Earthmen had worked very hard to make their mother beautiful and livable, but in his view this was not enough. He felt that they would have to struggle for at least another century before they could see what he was seeing.

"You are just in time. We are about to have a dance party here." Said the grape who had brought them in.

"Wow, dance party? What dance party?" When Rebecca heard this, she was very excited.

"This is our daily activity." Said a star fruit in the middle of the fruit, "Our owner, Mr Cherimoya, believes that with more exercise, we will be in better health to take care of the fruits we grow. Vegetables and cash crops, who are our neighbors, do the same."

"Oh, that makes sense. But when you open it up, will there be so much pressure that you won't even be able to manage such a large base?" Worried Photon.

"Your fears are well founded, but unnecessary. The camel scientist had already figured out the solution: he would use robots to help us." Said star fruit.

"Oh, robots! The same as Carly?" Natalie asked.

Star fruit nodded, "The camel scientist uses the latest, most stable model."

Before William could react, the music started and the fruits began to dance in small groups. There was a watermelon spinning quickly, showing his green coat. An orange and a cherry held hands and danced gracefully together. The star fruit who had just spoken was now "flying" in the hall, calling himself a "meteor" -- he looked very much like a star, especially when viewed from the front. Other fruits were already dancing to the beautiful music. William and his party began to dance involuntarily. William took Ranran's hand and kept to the rhythm of the music. One step, two steps. Ranran danced with him.

"Wow, I can't believe Master is a hidden master of minuet!" Photon and Natalie said. William was a little shy.

"It doesn't matter, William. I think you're really good at it." Ranran encouraged him with a smile. This made him more confident.

"William, what did you think of our dance party?" When the music ended, the cherimoya smiled.

He replied, "Well... Very good, I think! I also did exercise, ha ha ha." The other fruits laughed, too.

Cherimoya told them it was time to eat because it was morning outside. Natalie checked the clock on the computer and asked him how on earth he could have predicted so accurately.

"The camel scientist has given us the 'precise clock' gene so that we don't need a clock to know the time. Able to replace a clock, this gene helps us gather information about our environment. Come and enjoy the food!"

William tasted a large blueberry cake and Ranran had a cherry pudding. Photon, Natalie and Rebecca couldn't taste. They could only look on admiringly.

"It doesn't matter. We can make you taste it, too." The grape that brought them in went somewhere else and brought a special device. "It's a nerve impulse sensor that allows someone to feel what's going on in someone else's brain."

"Oh! Great, I want to try!" Photon first experienced. Soon, all three machines were experiencing the top flavors from the base.

At this moment, a small voice came from among the fruits,

"Dear alien friends, I need your help!"
