3rd POV

"Put your weapons down, and we can talk."
The female in red orders the two men, pointing her strange-looking weapon at them.
She looks at them with her amber-colored eyes, observing their every move.
"H-Hey, debt collector. Please put that thing away, please?"
The younger man says, raise his hands in the air.
*Bang!*
"It's not the time for a negotiation, do as I said."
"She's the real deal, mister Miller!"
The younger man jumps as the shot fired from the weapon landed near his toes, drilling a hole on the floor.
"Shh, kid. Better do as she said!"
The two then take out their weapons, laying them on the floor.
"Is It's all of them? Where are the devices from before, the glass bottle one."
The female walks closer to the men, still keep her weapon points at the two.
"Y-You mean, this?"
He shows her the glass containing black powder.
"Give me that."
She orders.
"Hey, Boris. I have a plan."
Miller whispers to Boris's ear, keeping his voice as low as possible.
"My plan is, you activate the bomb, then toss it at her."
"She wouldn't know, right? It's one of a kind thing."
Boris sweats, thinking about the plan suggested by Miller.
"Quickly, or I'll leave a hole in your head."
She firmly orders, charging the weapon with a blazing blue spark.
"O-Okay, Okay! I understand, miss debt collector!"
Boris presses the bottle's cap, heating the bottle.
"Here you go!'
She catches the bottles with one hand.
"What's the use of these?"
She smirks, asking them while looking down on her nose.
"Well, you see. It's a magical device that making thing goes-"
"Jump, mister Miller!"
"Wha-"

Edlic's POV
-Five Solars Pavilion- Restaurant.
*Boom!*
"The heck was that sound? It's close!"
"Guards, go there, quickly!"
Dayne orders the guards. They obey and hastily head to the location.
(It sounds like something exploded.)
"Hey, princess. Why are you sending all the guards away?"
(I was curious, the princess herself is an important person, sending the guards away meaning leaving her vulnerable to the threat.)
(Yesterday. I've seen it myself, the relation between the Arcadian king and the queen Arthisha.)
I look at the girl with a concerning look.

***Yesterday***
"We'll hop off and make it to the palace on foot."
The queen said, looking at me with a playful smile.
"Why would the queen has to walk such a long way. Isn't your majesty already sent them a notice regarding your arrival?"
Viscount Dino asks, surprised.

"Well, It's hard to explain. But, to put simply, our presence is not welcomed here."
(What? I never know this before.)
"And right now, there's an eye watching us, don't let your guard down."
She glances over her left shoulder, looking at the tall tower over the cliff.
(What's over there, shimmering on the bell tower?)
"Let's go. Staying outside for long is bad for your health. You and the prince may catch a cold."

"Greeting, King Endaran. I'm sorry for coming a bit too early for the Ret'a- I hope you wouldn't mind?"
"Hahaha, My niece is visiting, and how can I be mad?"
"I see two unfamiliar faces. Are they your guest, Arthisha?"
The King of Arcad, crossing his hands behind his back, looking at us with a smile, an empty smile.
(So this is the meaning of unwelcoming presence? I can see the look in his eyes, jealousy and hatred similar to those of Valerie.)
"Greeting, your majesty, the king of Arcad. My name is Dino Tsar, the diplomat from Eskarnda."
"And this is the second prince of Eskarnda, his highness, Edlic Eskarnda."
Viscount Dino introduces us to the king.
(What is with that look? He's looking down his nose at me, how disrespectful.)
"Oh, I see. Such an important figure goes all through the trouble of going here for just a political matter. Anyway, my name is Endaran, the 10th king of Arcad."
Pride fills his voice, displaying his authority.
"By the way, where's your daughter, Arthisa?"
"King Endaran? I know we're family, but don't address me just by my name. It's dishonoring the position as the queen of the great nation."
"And about my daughter, she's right here, beside me."
"Oh, sorry, I mistook her for the prince's lady in waiting."
A sly smile creeps upon the King's face.
Dayne tightens her fists as the King said that.
"Hey, hey. Contain your temper, princess."
I reminded her.
"This is why I hate to come to this place..."
She mumbles.
(Oh, she can sometimes show this side of her? Interesting.)
(But If I were In her shoes. I'll have the same reaction as her. the King is too much.)
"It's late, and you must be tired from the long journey."
"Please sent the prince and the princess to the Luphistia quarter."
"And as for the queen, I'd like to converse with her a bit more."
"Queen, would you mind If I'd like to have some of your time talking about your well-being in my office?"
"Sure, King Endaran."
"Prince, and Viscount Dino, please have a good rest."
She turns to us before being escort by the King and his servants.
(Why the queen seem okay being around that man? I'll go Insane talking to him.)

***Back to the present***
(I could see that the King holds a certain degree of hatred toward the mother and daughter pair, and he's not afraid to show it too.)
"Well, I have a reason for that."
"Do you want to explore the what's beyond of Arcad?'
She leans in, whispering to me.
(What? After that strange explosion occurred?)
"Even though I rarely come here but, I know quite a lot of places that can provide us some fun to past time!"
"And here's this, I bought this along with me this time."
She then uses her magic to take out the book from the air.
(What? This girl can use magic since this age? Dimensional magic at that!)
"H-Hey, hey, hey! Don't act so carelessly in the open!"
"Showing off your magic is no different than shouting, "I'm a magician!"
She looks at me without realizing her own action and asks.
"What? Why would I using my magic is a bad thing?"
"Besides, I've got you and mister Bell here, no need to worry, Eskardain prince."
(She means, " Since you are capable, so you should be fine on your own?" )
"You see, that's mean you're willing to put yourself and us in danger just because of using magic?"
I clench my teeth and trying to be reasonable with her.
(Magic trackers are everywhere. They're an international organization that kidnapping an individual with great potential magic power and using them as an experiment subject.)
(Especially kids, they're a bit too naive for this cruel world.)
"Okay, I'm sorry! But, I don't know why you're sensitive about this."
"The thing I just use is a magical Item, but It's an everyday Item that everyone In Eion can possed!'
She then takes a card with a blue tassel out from her sleeve.
"This is called a Porta'Poc, a dimensional pocket that can hold up to five kilos weight of items!"
(Is that card even a thing? I'm an Idiot, one of the reasons I hate myself.)
(Well, but I learn one more thing.)
"O-Okay?"
"Hmph! I bet your people don't get to have something like this?"
"Anyway, let's get back to the book."
She places the book on the table.
Currently, We're sitting on the third floor of one of the best restaurants in Arcad that Dayne has booked.
So, we get to have the entire floor to ourselves.
"The story of the legendary Smith, Beeraruk."
"Writed by Mitz Selis, the only person who has traversed the entire surface of the dessert!"
"This is the story of the smith of the surface who created four remarkable items even gods envy its existence!"
(Why would I need to listen to this dream-selling story?)
(But, looking at her face filled with excitement makes me forget about who she was, the rude princess of the Eion.)
"And In this particular volume of the book has a hint to the location of the Items!'
"Here, here, here! Look at what I've decrypted."
I look at the page she shows me.
"Eh, What is this? "East, but beneath under god's feet, the sound of the heartbeat. It's close to you more than you think."
"And what about this? "See your reflection in the crystal sea, but It reflects more of you as time goes on."
(I quite couldn't understand what's these sentences trying to say. A place?)
"Hehe, worry not. Since I am quite familiar with this kind of gimmick, It's been a piece of cake."
"The god's feet as In Shalese is Gen'an. And Gen'an a big town In the east of Arcad and Eion!"
"And the Crytal sea. It's quite far to the north. There is ice everywhere."
(Why are you telling me this?)
"But, Gen'an is closer. So..."
(I get it! I get it!)
(The reason she sent the guard away was intentional!)
"Let's go there, three of us!"

"Are you crazy? Taking a boat to an unknown town without telling anyone! I bet your mother will kill you if she learns about this!"
"Shuush! The boat is the fastest way to get around here. Normally, if you're taking a carriage to Gen'an, It'll take two days!'
She smiles, sitting on the bench.
"But taking a boat will reduce the time to only five hours!'
(Still! It's crazy! We just go on travel overseas without any preparation at all!)
"But we haven't prepared anything!"
I said, laying my empty hands in the air.
"Haha, I got this."
Does she take the "Thing" called Porta'Poc and waves it around in the air.
(I couldn't imagine what will be waiting for us there...)
"George, are you thinking the same as me?"
George, who's sweating hard, sees his life flash before his eyes before answering.
"Yes."

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.
