《The Key of Destiny》Chapter 10.2 - The help they needed

More than breakfast, what they did as soon as they entered Ailfryd’s home was lunch. It was extensive even for someone of his size, with shelves with books of different colours and content, more than anything else. His fingers tickled for catching some, but Ailfryd took them to a dining room as simple as the rest of his home.

The food, according to Ailfryd, was modest, although, in Finnian’s eyes, it was quite the opposite. Along with the usual berries that had already tasted in the last few days, they found what they thought to be a salad with cheese, tomato and other things that Finnian didn’t recognize what they were, but was still delicious. There were also biscuits filled with berries or meat, drumsticks with golden sauce and water so refreshing that he lost count of the glasses he had taken.

“You’re…” Leith began to say while observing him.

“Eating more than ever,” Rune said, frowning.

“I’m starving,” Finnian shrugged.

“You have to feed yourself well. Where do you think you draw so many energies to fight?” Ailfryd said with a smile on his lips.

Of him, of course, although that was not the subject to be dealt with for the moment. Ailfryd was aware of all the changes in Elthea, from Ariel’s presence to the Eroder. He even figured that Aer and Rune’s sudden disappearance was by a greater force, which led them to their encounter the night before.

Ead’s theory of why he did not recognize them was correct, but it happened the other way round as well. Shortly after Aer and Rune’s disappearance, Ailfryd evolved too, leaving both sides unaware of who they were for their new appearance. Besides that, it was pretty obvious the difference in strength between the four.

“If a Guardian has reached the Master level right now, it is not a coincidence,” Ead conceded.

“I’m still getting used to this form,” Ailfryd admitted.

“That didn’t look like it last night,” Finnian said.

“Attack first and ask later,” Ailfryd said, tilting his head. “Better to ask forgiveness than permission, now more than ever.”

“Have you been attacked here?” Aer said, receiving a quick negative.

Although he received reports from other regions with difficulties similar to what was happening in Hawell. Because of that, the barriers around were fortified, among other things.

Thus he learned that the Galya Tree was not only a Dorean where elthean eggs arose but also had a town in which many lived. They were in the core, near the great tree and pretty close to where they took care of the eggs. The Middle Area have residences, inns, and business, while the Outer Area is focused on sustainability, with farm and products they gather from the land.

However, the top of the forest was also used for living. Taking advantage of the high for patrolling the outside perimeter and more things, he will see it later.

“Anyway,” Ailfryd began to say, looking at him with his purple eyes “, there is more than one anomaly here.”

“You said before that I wasn’t like the other Signers. Have you met any of them?”

“Not in person, but my predecessor did,” Ailfryd said.

Far from explaining what the Signers did the last time they were, he commented on something they already knew. Elthea’s balance was altered from time to time, happening for so long that it was as usual as day and night. However, his story was always like that. They had moments of peace where they could solve their own problems. However, when the Lord of Calamity appeared to conquer everything, the game drastically changed.

“Calamity is always different, just like its powers or methods, but it ends up looking for the same thing,” Ead said, helping in that improvised class.

“Although there is now another element to consider,” Finnian intervened. “Ariel was looking for the Eroder.”

“If he’s hunting it…. However wins that fight, it wouldn’t be right for any of us.”

Those were the last words that Ailfryd said, remaining silent after a while. Ariel’s reaction to ignore them caught the Guardian by surprise. Luck existed, but they were not going to depend on it.

“In any case, you have other priorities at this moment,” Ailfryd said. “Your ability intrigues us. Last night you got all three to evolve. This is the first time it has occurred, as I have been told.”

It all happened when they were in the worst possible scenario, which was a regular thing out there. At first, it was unintentional, but last night he changed his way of seeing this power.

“I wanted to fight with them,” Finnian said, looking at Aer this time and then the others, “though I can’t do the same, I won’t be left behind.”

“Perhaps that’s why you don’t understand how it worked,” Aer murmured, “or how it took effect so quickly yesterday”.

“There’s something else. He could “see” through your eyes,” Ead said.

“We even hear you in our heads,” Rune added.

“The bond between Signer and partner,” said Ailfryd. “Your ties connected you, and the desire to help them made you join them at another level.”

“And it overloads you in the process,” Ead finished.

How was he supposed to defeat Ariel if he blackout as the intensity increased? Or how would he learn to manage his powers if the previous Signers had left an instruction manual with the basics? Ailfryd smiled at him, perhaps imagining his thoughts. If he was in charge of caring and educating so many elthean, he had to familiarize himself with those things.

“What about my visions? I’ve had some, although so far, I didn’t think they were anything but dreams.” Finnian admitted.

“They are usually warnings of what can happen,” Ailfryd said. “Details of something that has not been decided, so it is vitally important that you pay attention to them, but not written in stone. It’s part of your mission.”

“One that it gets complicated by moments,” Finnian burbled. “Isn’t there a book where you put what the signs before me did? That would certainly help.”

“There are a few worth a shot, but none of them could solve everything, Finnian. You will find out the answers you need over time. You’re not alone,” Ailfryd said.

As simple as that, the rest of elthean nodded full of confidence. They were in the Galya. They had achieved their first goal! What could they not solve? From now on, everything was a thousand times more complicated (and that's what I feared most). What if he wasn't the Signer they all think he was?
