《Monster Tamer In The Apocalypse》Chapter 1. Am I really back?

Jiangnan University, Jiangnan, China 5th September 2022.
“Hey, wake up.”
“Chen Qiang, you wake up now! The teacher comes here.”
A male student tries to wake up his classmate in a hurry, but bad luck seems to come to them. The teacher quickly found that someone dared to sleep in his first class! Moreover, that student is one from the rich side. He could imagine that the student would be like what and instantly his blood like pumped up.
The teacher's name is Ma Hong. He is one of the strictest teachers at Jiangnan University. Furthermore, he can be considered on top. He then came and slapped the table right in front of the student who was still asleep.
“Uh bro, it’s not like I don’t want to help you” Zi Ling looks to the student who is asleep and said utterly with pity all over his face.
*Bam!!!* The loud sound of the table makes the student who is still asleep as he pleases startled and wakes up panicky.
Chen Qiang was truly shocked as he stood straight, his hand touching his head, he felt whirling in his head as he had slept all day long. He unconsciously touches all his body as if checking something, he still has a shocking expression on his face. He looked around just to see the teacher Ma glare at him with cold eyes.
‘Why... Why I'm here now? Didn't I die in the end because of a later-phase rank 8 mutated beasts, Teacher Ma?! Why is he still alive?' Is here in the class?
'Is it a dream? No no no, that surely is not a dream because it felt so real, but are those memories real? Am I really back?
"Chen Qiang, you're out now!" Just when Chen Qiang sank to his thought teacher Ma shouted to him that made him sober.
"Sorry teacher Ma" After he calms down, he looked at him and said lightly. Then he walked out of the class. In those memories or his past life, teacher Ma is very close to him, he knows teacher Ma is very disliked to the student who slept in his class. Back then, he was a diligent student and one of his favorites, but now they seem fated to be just passers-by.
Chen Qiang went to the roof of one building in this college to take a breath and sort his messy thoughts. He sees the bustling scene that rarely has in his past life, The atmosphere was full of bliss very different from the gloomy on those days. He can just see this on a bigger base and yet, even that cannot be compared to this. Then his thoughts on the apocalypse that happened back then.
On that day at 08.00 am 25th, December 2025 is sudden of all transformations of the creature in the earth. No one knows why this change happened, and some people said this is because of virus-like, the opening of sources, a punishment of God, an occurrence of some oracle, etc. But the certainty is that day all living things on earth see the change, from a change of peace to chaos, a change of the food chain and all the creatures itself. That day is called evolution day later on.

All the creatures start to evolve, like some plants that seem like never stop growing, the animal becomes more powerful and savage, even human no exception. On that day the human that seems cannot resist the abrupt change of evolution just like losing their souls as their savage instincts take control for surviving. They become zombies, man-eaters that horrors humankind.
That day on all the highways occurred many accidents because they lost control, not to mention in the dense environment like crowded streets and so on. But, as for the other area which was less crowded fortunately there were not too many victims at the start because the zombies are still very weak, people who can resist the change just need to walk fast to avoid their pursuit. They just need to be careful if they are near them.
The humans that survive from evolution day gradually become powerful too, just like the other. However, humans are just human after all, even when they become powerful they are still impossible to defeat animals. Moreover, it’s not the animal again, but the mutated beast.
Chen Qiang remembers that he and his sisters just hid in their home. But sadly the government only responded by giving some crap suggestions that day and because of too much chaos outside they’re just waiting for the continuation reaction of the government and hoping for their help at first.
Fortunately, their house is pretty big and that day is near the new year, so almost all the servants do not work, even including their guards, because this area is rather safe and has a lot of security.
Most importantly, the area around their house does not have many inhabitants. Also, just old housekeeper Zhang Kai, four maidservants, and two guards that live with them that day, they were really lucky because none of them turned into the zombie.
But even when they have a lot of food stocks and try to save, eventually they will still run out of it.
They stayed in their house for two weeks waiting for what seemed to never come helper. The situation starts to get more depressed when the electricity gets run off and as they gradually lose hope, they finally heard there was a survivor gathering on the radio.
The place was protected by the military not far from outside the city that could give shelter to the survivors. Then they try moving to there because not many foods left here and for better safety.
Chen Qiang and his sisters followed by two guards named Chen Lei and Deng Gu while only the old housekeeper just stays at the house with the four maidservants and food stock that can ensure them for 1 month or more.
Zhang Kai really wants to help his young master go to the base, but with his old body, he thinks that just makes a burden for them.

As for the reason the maidservants are not willing to go is that previously, they sometimes see a lot of people not too far away from the house got bitten by the zombies. That really terrified them.
The scene is too scary to watch. The anguished voices of the bitten can make anyone shiver to their bones, so they prefer just to stay in the house.
Fortunately, the house has a wide garden that planted vegetables and tree fruits, maybe there are some that still have not died.
They did not use the car because a lot of the streets were blocked. The sound of the car can make a lot of zombies set the target to them and if they meet a blocked street that would just be their end.
Chen Qiang and his sisters do not bring much food for mobility. They then took the iron rods with the sharp tip the guards have made, as he and his sisters had taught by the guards how to use them.
A lot of people go there, but almost all the roads are very dangerous, many zombies wandering in there.
A scene in which he never forgets plays again. Initially, their journey can be considered smooth as they keep avoiding the zombies. But when they gradually had to pass the crowded area, some zombies started to block their way.
The pressure to the guards keeps increasing as they continue their journey and eventually they are surrounded by a large group of zombies.
They desperately wanted to break through the siege, but unfortunately, Chen Lei, one of the guards, could not handle getting swarmed by a lot of zombies at once and pushed to the ground. While Deng Gu made a choice to sacrifice himself by shouting like a madman to get the attention of all the zombies and go to the other way. He created a chance for them to run.
The two guards that he only knows about their names and doesn’t even care about them nor their families eventually do so much for him in a difficult situation.
Chen Qiang and his sisters ran with everything they had. But not long since they start to run, they get blocked by four zombies and when he just wants to pass them, somehow his little sister gets dragged down by one slightly different zombie that seems to suddenly appear from nowhere.
He just turns around and wants to help her, but in front of him, the four zombies suddenly entangled him. Without any choice, he then stabs and smashes the zombies that entangled him.
He just successfully gets rid them when the zombies that drag his little sisters bite her upper arm. His little sister screams in pain and wants to push that zombie, but not avail because her strength doesn’t make an effect at all.
Gradually his little sister gets encircled by more and more zombies.
Tears and mucus flowing at her beautiful face, her pitiful expression can make all people heartbroken.
The zombie successfully tore a piece of her meat. He madly dashes to his sister and successfully gets rid of the three zombies that siege her sister when more and more zombies come to surround them.
His little sister noticed it too. She knows that when she gets bitten, then even if she still lives she will turn like them too. She gets up all her courage with a slight unwillingness and shouts to her brother with her small eye full of tears.
"Bi..Big brother, you must leave now!”
“A..And please protect elder sister!, even if I still live ta..that would just torture me in the end. I will still turn like them ahh!!!..."
"Xi'er!!!...." Chen Qing with tears down from her eyes like a stream shouted. She just wants to help her little sister, but Chen Qiang with bloodshot eyes that are full of tears, turns around and grabs her.
"Br..Brother, what are you doing? We must save our little sister!!". Chen Qing hysterically calls Chen Qiang, but he just kept grabbing her and started moving, running from their pursuit.
"Shut up! And just follow me" with a harsh voice he shouted to his sister
"Brother...." Chen Qing was shocked when she heard he shouted to her, he never once talked harshly to her.
With pained hearts and great difficulty, she hung down her head and followed him, accompanied by the anguished voice of her sisters that gradually weakening.
They continue to walk there heartbreakingly. Fortunately, outside of the city, there were just a few zombies, so they could easily avoid them.
When they arrived, they could see a lot of militaries to guard the camp and many people lined up to want to enter the base. The people get checked one by one and some people go into the room to get more detailed checks before they enter the base. The people that have scratches or get bitten by zombies will get dealt with by the military.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
